Sometime last year (I think) a pj party or class was given here on how to make an oven dress. Does anyone still have the instructions? I had thought I had saved them, but cannot find them on my computer.

Thanks so much for posting the links. It is really sad that I have made these to sell at farmers markets, and I forgot some important steps! You all came thru as I knew you would, and I really appreciate it.

I made two of these, using the directions Kentucky Sunhine gave us, but I would not have a clue where to begin to do one now. I loved how there were no raw edges using that method. I checked Jardie's link but sadly, there is no info on the Oven door dress in there.

and here are the instructions

Oven Dress Materials & Instructions

2 - 12 inch squares of coordinating fabrics, one for outside dress fabric the other for inside lining
3/4 yard of 1/2"-3/4" lace
4 small buttons
small amount of round elastic thread (the thicker the better) for closures or the ribbon below
2 yards of coordinating ribbon if using for ties (I like the 1/2" width) cut into 4-18" lengths

1. Iron your fabric squares and place them right sides together, then fold in half and press lightly to create a fold in the center, place dress top along fold line as directed on pattern and trace with a dissappearing or water soluble pen. Cut dress pattern out with scissors.

2. Take lining of dress fabric to the sewing machine along with the lace, and with the lace placed on the right side of the lining fabric sew from one end of the curved edge to the other using an 1/8" seam, leaving the last straight portion of dress pattern without lace , repeat on other side. If lace ends need to be finished put a small hem in each end of the lace, with hem side facing up(once dress is sewn and turned right side out hems will be facing the right way.

3. Place outside dress top fabric on top of lining, right sides facing, and sew 1/4" seam from one end of dress to the other as shown on both sides. Note: If you are using ribbon ties for closures you would pin in place on each of the 4 corners,a length of the ribbon where the pattern is straight next to the lace. Turn dress right side out and check to make sure lace isn't puckered, and press lightly (remember to set your iron on synthetic at this point if you are usng synthetic lace) so it dosen't melt. Set aside dress top.

4. Fold and Press tea towel in half to crease making sure corners are aligned, place on cutting mat and open so that crease is visible, place ruler on crease and cut towel in half with a rotary cutter. Note: You may notice the pattern on your towel isn't straight or in alignment, don't worry just choose a front and back, I always put the one that looks the nicest and straightest to the front.

5. Take both towel pieces to sewing machine and with a loose long stitch baste 1/4 seams on the cut edges of both towels. Then hold the thread from one end while pulling a single thread from the other end to gather the towels to the approximate width of the dress opening.

6. Turn dress wrong side out again, and with outside fabric facing you, place end of towel through the opening of one end, sliding it through to the opening of the other end. Towel print should be facing right side of outside dress fabric. Align the edges and sew a generous 1/4 seam from side to side (makng sure not to catch ribbon ties if you are using them). Turn towel right side out to inspect and make sure towel was all caught in the seam, if all is well proceed.

7. Turn towel wrong side out again, and roll sewn towel up and tuck inside towel as shown in picture, gather second towel half and place it through the neck opening of towel print side facing right side of outsde fabric as shown, and align edges of towel with edges of dress, and sew generous 1/4" seam as before.

8. Turn towel right side out to inspect as before, and press lightly. Making sure corners are pushed out ( I use the end of a small rounded paintbrush handle to push corners of dress out).

9. If you are using the button/elastic closure this is where it s added before the binding goes on for neck. Beginning at the back side of dress, open the 2 sections of fabric at neck line and place the needle with elastic thread inside, guidng it to the bottom seam of the backside of dress, in the seam line take a stitch through the outside fabric of dress, and then back through the lining side of fabric to form a small loop....knot and tie off, and repeat on other side of dress.

10. Take one of the 4 buttons, and place it on bottom of dress near seam in alignment with the elastic loop, and sew button on from between the layers of fabric of dress top so stitches don't show. Repeat on other side of dress, then sew the last 2 buttons on the center of the front of dress (I just eyeball the center).

11. You can turn the neckline in a 1/4" and hem by hand by using small ladder stitches or you can proceed with a binding hem as follows.
Cut a strip of fabric to use for binding the neckline just as you would for a quilt top, I cut my binding strips 1 and 3/4"s wide, by 20-22 inches long, and fold in half and press.

12. With raw edge of binding lined up with raw edge of neck line fabric, begin sewing on binding just as you would for a quilt with a 1/4"seam. Trim close to seam of neckline with pinking shears so the binding will sit nicely around the curve, fold binding over to the back side and handstich binding to lining fabric taking small stitches to keep them hidden, I generally use the seam line from sewing the binding on as a guide to keep me going nice and straight. Press neckline and
wah-lah! Your Oven Dress is now ready to be hang on your oven door or gifted!

If you are going to use button and elastic closures instead of bows you can add them here, you do not have to tie in a knot...I just do to keep them together while sewing then clip knot. This pattern is a work in progress, I came up with the template for this one by using a dinner plate, and everything else was trial and error and I am still learning.

Alternately you can add the elastic before sewing the neckline together as shown below which is how I first did it...so you can add the elastic if using in whichever step you choose

You can also baste by hand as I have done in the pic,it's just a matter of preference.

note that I cut small notches/slits around the neckline to help with the turning in...do not snip to far...

handstitching the neckline is my favorite method now as it is just so neat and looks finished well, with this method there are no seams to unravel or finish off.

I think that is pretty much all you need to know...sorry my pics aren't as organized as they were for the PJ party...I've had computer issues and lost some folders.

The only other thing I can think of is...and TCmay caught it at the PJ party, and brought it to my attention...if you use cotton lace for the trim you will want to hem the ends so it don't unravel when laundering...the hemmed side faces up when ou are attaching to the fabric in step 2.

you can also add buttons down the front of the dress or down the back to mimic a real dress.

hope this helps Smile enjoy!

Well....that's a different method than I'm used to. I will have to give this a try. Sorry I missed it the first time around. TY, KS, this was a super tutorial!!!

There are a couple of sewing hints I'd like to add.

1. You can also attach velcro to either side of the lining of the dress before sewing it together.

2. Using some fish line and zigzag stitches over it can also help with making the gathers. Just make a knot in one end of a piece of fish line, pin the knotted end in place and stitch over the line. When finished with that, pull the fish line to the needed measurement and pin in place. Remove the fish line after pinning and sew.

3. A seamstress trick for making gathers...when you begin sewing for your gathers, place your finger at the back of your presser foot and hold your fabric in place until it is too bulky to hold, release and continue in that manner across the fabric to the end. Helps make the gathers while sewing.
