An old friend from high school lost his wife about a year and a half ago. She was young, they have a very young (elementary school aged) daughter. I'm not sure of the circumstances, we weren't that close in school but have been in touch via Facebook which is how I learned of their loss last year. I had a message from him today asking if I would be willing to help make some items from her clothes for his daughter. He'd like a small quilt, or some pillows, or whatever I think would work. He often remarks on the pictures of quilts and projects I post on FB, so he said he thought of me and was hoping I'd help. He'd be willing to pay me for my time. Of course I said yes, and I'd never accept payment for the honor of helping his family heal. As I told him, when someone you know suffers such a tragic loss, you feel so helpless...giving me this task is a gift to me. I just wanted to share the story because I am so touched, and so flattered he'd ask me to take on such a special project. I hope I can make something to help ease their pain even a little. What a bl-e-ssing you will be to that family. Whatever you make will be cherished forever. The first time I did a project like that, I wasn't prepared for the emotions I felt as I worked. I had to pause & take time to focus & bring my mind to peace. And I must share...after I got done with one very special quilt, I was pressing & the iron suddenly spat out 2 big water spots on the ironing board cover. When I looked closer, the spots were both heart-shaped. I've never forgotten that.

That is a special task. They will love whatever you make. The bear idea would be great for the child-and a pillow, too. my philosophy: there are no real mistakes in quilting, just design opportunities!!

I like the bear idea also. One other thing that you might consider is having the daughter draw something on fabric with crayons. Plain white fabric and regular Crayola crayons. We have done the crayon projects a few times and they are great. Press the artwork with a paper towel on top (dry iron) before sewing it to the other fabrics.

You'll bless their daughter and the husband with such a meaningful gift. I'm eager to see what you do for them too.

What a great opportunity for you...and a great blessing. Since their daughter is young...perhaps a special pillow with the photo art...and a cuddle quilt for her...would be quick and nice. And, although it is more work...it would be wonderful to do a large bed-size quilt...to be put back by her father and given at her wedding day, as a special gift to honor her mother. That would make a really great gift...more special than a little girl can imagine...and you could take longer on it than on the cuddle quilt/pillow. Just a thought. I'd be happy to help you piece some CQ blocks with the scraps if you like. What a great opportunity for you! Hugs!
