When I say that the TrueSharp blade sharpener really works, I mean it! I sliced off the top of my left index finger. No stitches as all the skin is gone, but it took over three hours (and a tourniquet) to finally get it to stop bleeding. Doesn't hurt too much, so with padding and rubber glove on hand, I am off to bed.

Oh no!!! I'm sorry you hurt yourself like that! That's one of my biggest fears too, slicing my fingers while cutting!
I hope you slept well and it doesn't start to hurt a lot.

I WAS A GIRL SCOUT LEADER FOR 9 YEARS (AND YES GIRL SCOUT LEADERS DO GO TO HEAVEN) ANY WAY I CUT OFF THE TIP OF MY FINGER WITH SCISSORS AT A PROGRAM CALLED WORLD DAY - DO THEY STILL CALL IT THAT. I WAS IN THE BATHROOM BECAUSE IT WOULD NOT STOP BLEEDING AND A MOM CAME IN AND SAID IF IT DID NOT STOP I NEEDED TO GO TO EMERGENCY AND THEY WOULD STOP THE BLEEDING WITH A COCAINE POWDER......ARE YOU SERIOUS....YES SHE WAS.

When I was in 10th grade I took industrial sewing as one of my classes. I was making a nightgown and caftan set and had a brand new pair of Gingher shears. I cut the top off of my index finger on the left hand... I had to go upstairs where the health class was and give them some real life drama to study by. Made one girl faint... lol

There was blood drops all the way up the stairwell.

I bought a rotary cutter and mat and ruler for a seventy eight year old quilter for Christmas.....and told her about five times to be really really careful. She keeps looking at me like I am nuts.....but accidents happen!

Sounds painful! I think plenty of pampering is in order and NO CUTTING FOR AT LEAST A WEEK. Would be a good idea to buy some "klutz gloves" as SavedSinnr puts it.

I cleaned my sewing machine and "discovered" where the little cutting snippers are placed. They are tiny and SHARP! I'm now using New Skin and a bandaid.

I sliced the edge of my index finger years ago. After it healed and was hand quilting,there was no feeling in that area. Would end up with blood on the back side of the quilt.

Oh, I'm back cutting this morning. It's harder for me to type than cut! It goes hurt like the dickens today. And I have to cancel my first LA quilting class tomorrow, boo-hoo!

P.S. I'm going to pick up a pair of those gloves on my next trip to JA!

If by posting saga makes your cutting more cautious, my pain is worth it.

Nothing bleeds like a finger cut or a head cut. I nearly passed out one time when I cut a finger pretty bad in the kitchen. Went outside and sat on the back steps with my head between my knees. Then I went next door to the neighbors' so that Zella could doctor me. Everyone needs a mother sometimes.

KC I am sooo sorry this happened It can be a REAL pain! lol....I sliced the side of the end of my index finger (left...cutter jumped the ruler) a couple of years ago.... at Alex Anderson's quilt retreat!!!! Alex wasn't there at the time and was she GLAD...she told me she cannot handle that...I didn't need any stitches but it did take a while to quit bleeding...sewing was almost impossible cutting a little easier but it was way fun to be able to see what everyone else was doing...
Everything healed fine but I had pain for most of the last two years as the nerves were healing. Now days I rarely have pain at all.

One thing about it is you get a whole new respect and safety first attitude about it all!

Take care and be extra careful! I have a ritual for changing the blade in my rotary cutter that involves using one of those gripper things that you can use to open a jar lid. Helps me separate the blades that I buy in a 5 pack. Gloves and stuff too. It is certainly wise to have someone around while changing the blade in case you have a mishap.

One time cut the tip of my thumb really badly when I worked at the LQS. Just me and the owner and one customer there. I thought that I might be pregnant, so I wasn't sure about taking any medicine for the pain. Boy, you sure get a throbbing pain from it, huh?

Now rest up and take it easy.

When I took my first quilting class, my DH bought me kevlar gloves for when I was cutting. he was so afraid I'd hurt myself!

Left the blade opened on my cutter (a major safety no no) and knocked it off of my cutting table. Thankfully it was very minor. I'm guessing that not many people have cut their foot with one!

If only you could get that "Big Hunk" to cut the fabric for you while you recuperate .

KC - So very sorry. Sending love and prayers for quick healing. I do have to say after reading all of the posts it's like cutting a finger (or a foot!) is like a badge of honor (in a sick way) for quilters. I can see you all sitting on the front porch of the old grocery store in a rocker....telling stories about your injuries and proudling detailing how you were right back to your quilting. You didn't let that missing finger slow you down a bit! HaHaHa! Seriously though, it is a good reminder to be extra careful.

cutting a finger is no fun..

cut my left little finger in 3rd or 4th grade.. in class we were cutting/shapeing potatoes for stamping with scalpels.. and teacher interupted us cutting to tell us to be careful.. and i looked up at the wrong time.. cut at the lower joint to the bone.. had to go to ER for stitches..

Oh, KC, so very sorry you had this experience. You must have had quite the cut if it took that long to get the bleeding stopped. Fingers and face do bleed badly but that is a very long time. If there was no skin to attach, how did they seal the wound? Hope the healing is quick and full.

Lisa and TcMay: Me, too. Cutter went through a leather shoe to get to my toe. You'd think as awkward as a rotary cutter is, it would twist and fall with the blade sideways or upwards but as you know, noooooo. Straight as an arrow, blade down and vertical!!!!!

In catalogs, I've seen the gloves and I've seen the grips you can put on rulers. Anyone tried the grips? How awkward are the gloves? I can't even work with garden gloves to dig in the dirt; how would they be when cutting?

Lisa~ my friend did the same thing, but she was wearing leather shoes and it sliced the top of her shoe open! They were new shoes and she was so upset... she wasn't thinking that it was a good thing she was wearing the shoes!

Don't have any "w *ar" stories to tell Thank Heavens! Just "Arthur" came to visit me sometime last night, and he tripped over my finger, when he left.

Many yrs ago {when I was in my early 20's} I was working in a sub shop and sliced the end of my index finger on the meat slicer...it hurt for a LONNNNG time!!! I have a scar but my nail grew back ok...I think it's because the ER dr glued it back together instead of stitching it...boy did that stuff ever sting!! Worse then the cut...lol!

I think maybe you should put the 'GO BABY' machine on your birthday list or something, that way it'll do most of your cutting for ya as long as you can turn the crank!

Oh, no! I had a fear of this same thing happening last night. I was so careful in using my rotary cutter because we are leaving Sunday on a cruise. Also extra careful walking down the front steps and the basement steps!

Bonnie Hunter was checking out rotary blade sharpeners on her blog last Fall and reported that they really do get the blades sharp. I guess she's right! I have a friend who, while using a rotary cutter, cut the skin at the base of her thumb and index finger on her left hand. It severed the tendon and took surgery and physical therapy to get it back to being usable.

Oh KC, I'm hurting for you. Maybe I should buy Sue and I those gloves for when we cut. It would take some getting used to, but it might be worth it.

Oh No, No, No. Oh, so sorry. I'm still shivering from reading about it.

During my very first quilting class, when I had just bought a rotary cutter because it was on the supply list, the woman at another table cut her finger. Scared me to death, and I didn't even see anything. Store owner took her to the ER, and she came back all bandaged and finished the class. After she had gone to the ER, one of the clerks came in and showed us the type of rotary cutter that shuts itself when you are not holding the handle down. I bought it right away and never used the original non-closing one I had bought. It'll save your toe from dropsies, but not your hand from slicing accidents.

KC, take care of yourself and take it easy for a while. Don't try to do too much too soon.

Excuse me, now. I'm going to go look for those Fons and Porter safety gloves.

eta: I found it. It's called a Klutz glove. Sold singly, not a pair.

My friend did the same thing! Cut the top of her foot right through her sock!

Many years ago my principal came to evaluate me teaching a geometry lesson. It was required that the students be involved so I had a macho football player using scissors to demonstrate a lesson. Macho cut himself badly and had to be helped to the nurse by 2 giggling football players. He was bleeding profusely and they had to almost carry him. The principal was impressed that I kept my cool and finished the lesson. If I'd barfed half the girls would have also. Better to keep going.

Oh my goodness!! I'll bet that hurt a lot. The one I ordered from Walmart was delivered today - I opened the box but haven't taken the sharpener out of its packaging yet...hoping to give it a try this weekend. I'll be extra cautious with the sharpened blades. Hope you heal very quickly.
