My absolute favorite and closest Uncle passed away in April and I am his executer and heir. My question is...we are country folk and my Uncle was well known by all by his flannel shirts. He always wore flannel. Anyway, has anyone ever made a quilt using flannel shirts? My girls miss him terribly and I would like to make each of them a snuggly quilt to keep and remind them of their fave Great-Uncle...He really was special to ALL of us! Any suggestions or links?

As long as you pre wash your other fabrics, you should be fine. If you paper piece, there is a free flannel shirt pattern at Paper Panache http://www.paperpanache.com/guests/awagner.htm

My dad passed just as i was learning how to quilt, 3 years ago..i sure wish i had saved his flannel shirts, to make a quilt for me.. i saved his witer coat, hat, gloves and his cane. i use the cane today. i use his winter gear when i shovel snow..i can still smell his aftershave..
the flannel shirts will make a wonderful quilt..i am making a raggedy quilt out of some flannel now..using jeans from the second had shop for the other side.(browns and tans) i am cutting them all up at 6 1/2 inch square. What a wonderful thig to do for the girls!
What a cute idea to make the blocks look like the flannel shirt! Thank-you bejeweledcat. I have the original flannel shirts. Gee, I was thinking just simple blocks....hmmmm.......I'm thinking my youngest would appreciate a quilt like that. I have always wanted to try a raggedy quilt....Kim strut...I'm just afraid of cutting the shirts and making a mistake. Do you have a pattern with DETAILED directions? Help me! Thank you for you great ideas!

Raggy's are REALLY easy! Simple squares of just the shirt flannel or you could add some solid flannel or lightweight denim in with them. How manny do you need to make?

in pieces..you can't make a mistake dear..just cut the shirt up..take the collar off..then the sleeves..after you take off the sleeves..cut up the underarm seam..so it lays flat..then cut the rest of the way up to the collar, the shoulder area..so it all lays flat...then use a 6 1/2 in template..or use a rotary cutter and board and cut in strips of 6 1/2". (if that is the size you want to use.) one of the ladies here made me one..it is beautiful..
you will then find your backing..if you decide to not use jean material..use a different flannel...for the back, and if you want it with a little more body..use a cotton or flannel for the middle..either one will fray nice..
when sewing them together..i used a 1/2 inch seam allowance.
I think the quilt is a great idea, how comforting to snuggle up in fav uncles flannels. A dear friend lost her mom last year and one of her sisters made clothes for a teddy bear for each of the sisters from her moms p.j's. She has her teddy bear on her bed.
You can also use flip and sew and make crazy patch type blocks in whatever size you would like. I just used that method for a baby quilt with flannels and realized when I was making the baby quilt that the pattern would work for all types of flannel and what a great masculine quilt it would make using flannels just like what would be in flannel shirts. The pattern I used was in Fons & Porters latest Quick Quilts magazine.

The magazine was Easy Quilts and is available on their website if you cannot find it in the store, however, you really wouldn't even need a pattern, but it is nice to have one to go by and you can see who their quilt turned out.

I made a Raggedy Quilt from all recycled flannel shirts. Keep the front part with the pockets. If you have plain blocks left over alternate them with the squares containing the pocket. The pockets can be used as they are or if you have to cut them off the backing, re-sew them with a blanket stitch to make new squares. You could also just use them in the quilt itself. Use the tutorial suggested and have fun with this. I also used a recycled flat flannel sheet for the inner 'batting'. Works well.

I made one for my sister from her husbands shirts. I used the buttons, pockets and sleeves. It turned out so nice and had enough for her two daughters also. They all love cuddling with Dad! It will be unique and memories will flood them eah time they use it.
