CoF 2013 Row robin - sign ups are CLOSED! Sign In/Join
posted
Hello Retreaters! These are the offical rules for the June 2013 Harrisburg retreat Row Robin. The committee was inspired by the quilt show during retreat in Branson, and has a great theme for you all for 2013!

You may sign up now if you are on the retreat list OR the wait list. Since the time between retreats was shorter this year, wait list people can join in now if they wish. If you are on the wait list and do not get to come to retreat, I can mail your quilt back to you after the retreat ends. This way, your quilt will be included in the display in our conference room, and in the photos Smile

TO SIGN UP : Reply to this thread AND then send me a PM with your board name, real name, email address, mailing address AND phone number.

Groups will be finalized as you receive your 'cookie' on Gonesewins thread to indicate your deposit has been received. I will be allocating groups of FIVE people - this will give each person a quilt measuring 72 x 48 inches (finished)including the sashings between rows.

The Row Robin Quilts theme will be "Friendship is the thread that ties hearts together"

Each artist will create a row that will measure 12 1/2" by 48 1/2". A length of fabric (the Thread) will be sent to each participant that is to be used only in row 1 (the middle row).

Row 1) Make the "thread" enter the quilt at the outermost edge of the upper left corner and extend down 3"; it must be at least 3" wide. It should run through the 48 1/2" length in any method, style or technique the quilter desires. But it must exit the quilt at the lowermost edge of the bottom corner and measure 3" high by at least 3" wide. The quilt owner will add a 3"(finished) sash on the top and on the bottom of her row and send 2 pieces of her sashing fabric 3 1/2" x 48 1/2" along with her row to be used on the last 2 rows.

Row 2 The next quilter will add her row ABOVE the row with the "road". It may be in any method, style or technique she desires following the theme of " Friendship is the thread that ties hearts together". The row must measure 12 1/2" by 48 1/2" unfinished.

Row 3 The next quilter will add her row BELOW the row with the "road". It may be in any method, style or technique she desires following the theme of " Friendship is the thread that ties hearts together". The row must measure 12 1/2" by 48 1/2" unfinished.

Row 4 & 5) The next quilters will add their rows to the TOP then the BOTTOM of the quilt using any method, technique or style they choose in keeping with the first 2 rows. She will add the sashing and her row to either the top or the bottom of rows 2 or 3. These rows must measure 12 1/2" unfinished by 48 1/2" unfinished.

The person who sews the last row will mail the quilt to Lori (Gonesewin) by JUNE 1, 2013

Please do NOT share pictures of your rows or the quilt. Please use good quality fabrics, and be aware that you may need to buy additional fabrics for each row to ensure that your row fits in with the preceeding rows.
Have fun and happy piecing to all! Smile

I feel really stupid to need an understanding (of the first row)-a picture in other words. Will the first rows be similar then in all the quilts?

Secondly: Does that mean that the ending result with be a "heart" themed quilt?

The wording was kind of hard to explain properly without a picture, so please don't feel stupid. The first row in each quilt will have one fabric that will be common to all the quilts. However, the style of the row - wether it be pieced, blocks, applique, or something else is up to the quilt owner. Also everyone will use their own choice of fabric colours and styles along with the inital fabric.

I would imagine that with the amount of creativity and the different thoughts of everyone on the topic, that each quilt will end up quite differently. But they will all have the starting fabric to tie them together when we display them.

There are other ways to express friendship other than hearts, so I dont think they will all be hearts, I am frequently wrong tho haha Big Grin

Hope this helps Smile

Jane Kiwi, include me among the el stupidos. Can you make a row and show us what you mean? Especially with the fabric/thread you are mentioning. By thread do you mean content?

I see how the blue was used as the river between the quilts shown. In lieu of actually having to sew, how about showing us what you mean with a drawing.

The quilts featured are side by side as continuous art whereas a row robin is done in rows. Don't know the connection or how the rows connect.

If you cannot draw or feel you cannot draw, just use stick figures or some such. A very rough draft is A-okay.

Mucho thanks,

Susan

Only the "thread" runs through the first (middle) row and will "connect" with the next quilt. None of the other rows will "connect".

I hope this helps...

And Jane, the directions will have to be changed so that every-other person will have her "thread" start at the lower left and end at the upper right so they WILL connect when we hang them at the retreat.

Lets say you chose to do a four patch for your row. (Thats the easiest thing for me to try and work up on paint program heh).

Your "thread" fabric (the fabric given by the committee to each participant to use) will be the blue fabric. You would put the blue fabric in the top left hand corner of your row, and then across the row in any way you choose for your row, and end the blue fabric at the bottom right of your row. The "thread" fabric you use at these edges must be at least 3 inches wide and three inches high to qualify, and to make sure your quilt will play nice with the one hung next to it Smile

As long as the blue fabric is used SOMEHOW across your 48 inch row, the method and style and what fabrics etc you choose to go with that blue fabric are up to you.

Once the first rows are completed, the thread fabric will no longer be used in any of the other rows, so nothing in the following rows needs to hook up anywhere Smile

If this isnt clear please feel free to PM me, or if you have a better handle on design feel free to post your own explanation row as well Smile

What would the time limit per section be? for example, I get mcpatches quilt, how long do I have to add my strip to her quilt?

I am thinking I make like to do this, a new grandbaby is due in Jan, just want to make sure I could do it in the time limits.

Also can we do anything we want on our strip of other peoples quilt just matching up colors?

Thanks Gonesewin for the better example Smile

I will also take the left/right thing into account when forming groups and allocating the final instructions.

Sprmom - The time for each row will be about one month. That will allow about a week between each row for mailings, and a few extra days at xmas/new year. This should be manageable as it is about one block a week, if you do your row as blocks.

I will allow each participant to mail their rows early IF the person they are sending to is fine with that. I know in past row robins some people have preferred early mailing as they may only take a weekly trip to town for buying fabrics etc.

We will be starting November 3rd or earlier if the deposits are in. It will take a few days for the focus fabric for row one to arrive for each participant but you can start your ideas going anytime Smile

So, the point I am understanding is that when all the quilt tops are pieced and hanging side-by-side in the retreat center they will all be tied together with the common fabric that all will have running in their 1st rows. The actual theme, colors, fabbies of the quilt will be maker's choice and will not necessarily have to be hearts. Is this close?

OK then: the sashing is a fabric of OUR choice..not the thread color. Also must the first row, without sashing be skinnier due to the sashing than the subsequent rows? Once I'm convinced I can do this..I'll sign up. Thanks alexemmarose for the clarification on the hearts thing.

OK I think with Lindaj52's extra explanations the lightbulb went off. I know I can do this and will be picking my top up in Harrisburg. For those who are contemplating this RR for the first time, even not getting to go last year didn't dampen my RR creativity. I was so excited when I got them back with my blocks. The only thing that I am dissappointed about is not getting the square of COF 2012 to identify my siggy blocks. Would love someone to send me a Christmas present of an embroidered block -- Hint Hint. These siggy tops are going to get confusing after a while LOL. Quilter Chris

Yes, the sashing is your choice, it won't be provided. So you will make the first row, 12.5 inches by 48.5 inches. Then you will attach your sashing strips to the top and the bottom, resulting in a 12 inch finished BLOCK.

When the next person in the row robin receives it s/he will make another 12.5 inch by 48.5 inch row and then attach THAT row to one of the sashing strips.

Once all of the rows, and subesequent sashing strips are applied, then each row will be the finished 12 inch which is the standard block size.

Also, each row will have a sashing strip between it and the next row - not just the first row Smile Thats why you need to include 2 extra sashing strips when you mail your package to the first person who will work on your quilt. Smile

Hope to see those on the fence signing up soon Smile

Sure, as long as it looks good to you as a quilter Smile For example, if you get the last row on my quilt, and all my rows are pieced blocks with squares and triangles, then adding appliqued hearts might look a bit odd with nothing on the other end to balance that out. Make sense? Smile

I have always loved everything in my row/round robins tho so far and they have always balanced perfectly Smile

Jane/Lori, the way I understand the rules; each originator's row will not necessarily be the middle row when quilt top is finished because each robin has the option of where to attach their row and sashing. We are not being designated whether to alternate top or bottom like last time?

I thought the originator adds the first two sashings to their row? And provides sashings for each robin in group?

Thanks,

Susan

Really - this isn't that difficult.

Forget about the part where it says "either the top or the bottom" and let's just go with this:

You will make a row. Your row will have a thread running through it. You will add sashing to the top and the bottom of the row and send it, along w/ 2 pieces of sashing along to the next person.

Next person will make a row - any kind of row - attach it to the top of the first row. Attach a sashing to the top of her block and send it to the next person.

Next person will make a row - any kind of row - attach it to the bottom of the first row. Attach a sashing to the bottom of her row and send it to the next person.

Next person will make a row - any kind of row - attach it to the top of the quilt and send it on to the next person.

Next person will make a row - any kind of row - attach it to the bottom of the quilt and send it to me.

Lois - (and everyone else) the sashing is 3 1/2" unfinished

***Look at the picture I drew. Imagine 25 quilts side by side w/ this thread running through the middle...I think it will look AMAZING!***

When we make rows, are the fabrics washed or unwashed when we make the blocks? Or does it matter?

Glad to see you signing up Auntie Reba Smile

Lois can you please adjust your post? There are only TWO extra sashing strips going out with the row, and each sashing strip will be 3 1/2 inches, to end up with 3 inches finished.

Here is the correct math as shown in the first posting...

5 rows of 12 inch finished blocks
4 rows of sashing 3.5 inch unfinished, 3 inch finished

That gives 60 inches of rows and 12 inches of sashing for 72 inches.

There will NOT be any sashing strips on the very top or the very bottom of the quilt, sashing is between the rows only as in prior robins.

Okay. Have read last instructions. When all is said and done the originator's row with blue thread will be in the middle of all the quilt tops??? So when displayed the blue thread will be one continuous zigzagging line....

Just out of curiosity: Will the blue fabric that is being sent to all robins be a patriotic (American flag) blue? If so, might be fun to have the whole kit and kaboodle lean toward the patriotic side don't you think? I know not necessary but kind of good "food for thought". At least for me; I don't have a patriotic quilt and sure would love one.

BTW, what is the standard measurements for QOV? Another food for thought.... lol, thinking too much here....
