Thank you everyone for taking the time to share your thoughts and machine recommendations. I'm still researching but I've been given at least a short reprieve.

More years ago than I care to remember, I was given a Montgomery Wards UHJ1949 sewing machine. Since I had a working machine it was tucked into a corner never to see the light of day until my recent death by stripped gear crises.

Hubby plugged it it and we had light but the foot pedal would move the needle. I took it to JoAnn's for the repair man to give it a once over, etc. The lady in the machine department recognized the model immediately....she had had one as her first machine. Well darlin that she was, she plugged it in; threaded it; made a couple of quick adjustments and gave it a whirl. She says it's doing a beautiful straight stitch. Only problem seems to the the leaver at the top that changes stitch patterns is stuck on the straight stitch....but if it needed to be stuck on one stitch I'm glad it chose the straight one. I've brought it home to give it a try.

I've downloaded the manual so we shall see. I may yet get to make by blue jean bears.

Smile Happy for you! Isn't it great when something you already 'have' does the trick instead of having to go out to 'buy'?

That was nice of the lady to do. Hope to see pics of the jeans bears. I love them.
