The pattern says: The Flutterby blocks are pieced the same as log cabin blocks only on a slant. The diamont center is the foundation for each block. The first round of "logs" is made using one strip of one fabric. The second round of "logs" is made using 2 strips of one fabric.
Here is a snapshot of the quilt done in scrappy fabrics...but would be wonderful in batiks, pastels, black/white...
Here's how we'll run the swap:
Go to www.unitednotions.com and print out the instructions for the Flutterby quilt...if the link above doesn't work for you...go to their home page, click on Fun Items...then Free Patterns...scroll over to the Flutterby pattern and download the pdf file. (When you print the pattern...make sure your printer setup page shows SCALING as NONE...don't adjust any percentages, or set to print within the page size...this will ensure you get a full-size template for the diamond.)
Each person will send these items to everyone on the list: -- a piece of fabric that is at least 6" x 10" for their diamond center (this is instead of cutting them before hand due to bias edges... -- a copy of the pattern piece (this is because everyone's printer seems to be different...and this will ensure all of the blocks you get back are the same size) -- any guidance you want on fabrics to use...such as "only blacks and whites please"...or you can ask some folks to "match the fabric I'm sending please"...and others to "please use fabrics that contrast with my diamond fabric"...so you control how scrappy the end result might be.
Once you receive these items from someone (just like they'll be getting yours)...you will follow the pattern instructions to complete a block for them...using 2 1/2" strips of fabric...you can use noodles, jelly rolls, or cut from your stash...what ever it takes to complete block as the "owner" asked. Hopefully, you can do so with your stash...but if the stash is small (heaven forbid!)...then you might need to purchase something.
Fabric should be 100% LQS quality fabric...and since we're using jelly rolls (possibly) or pre-cut noodles that you might not have 'created' I'm not going to ask that the fabric be washed. HOWEVER, the fabric should be tested for color fastness...especially any darks that you use. AND if they bleed...they MUST be washed.
Everyone is responsible to mail their center fabrics to all others who sign up...and to mail back finished blocks to everyone within the swaps time limits.
POSTING: Everyone is expected to post when... -- you mail out your center squares -- you receive center squares from someone else -- you mail out someone's finished block -- you receive your own completed block
We will take SIGN UPS UNTIL 16 May.
We will mail our center fabric, pattern, and "notes of instruction" items to everyone on the list by 21 May.
We will complete our blocks for everyone and mail them back NLT 16 August...that gives us 3 months to get all of the sewing done!
Okay...I think that just about does it.
Edited to add: DUH...I need you to PM me with your name, hgtv name, mailing address, and phone number for my records...then I'll send out an e-mail to everyone with the address of those swaping...Thanks
Kathy a bit more clarification, please. Are you doing this like the F8 swap? If so, are you putting a limit on participants? Or will this be like CYOC? Just curious for time mgt. sake.

TX...you're too fast for me..., I wanted to post the picture of the quilt...and haven't figured out how to get "type" to show up under a picture...so just started a reply to add all the swap data.
What if, instead of mailing the cut diamond centers to each other, since there are four bias edges to get distorted, how 'bout just sending a strip of fabric with the centers of each side marked and the next person can sew the rounds on in accordance with those markings? And avoid sewing on a bias edge by only triming the diamond edge as each segment of the Log Cabin is added.
I printed the template and it appears it measures out at 5 1/4" x 9 1/16".

Now paus...you need to read slower...we're not sending diamonds...we're sending a piece of fabric (6 x 10) that the diamonds will be cut from ...so no bias edges.
We are also sending "Our" version of the pattern page...since printers do not always act the same...that way you won't end up with blocks that don't go together well...
So...you in??
AND...BTW...I like your idea of marking the diamonds on the fabric...so folks can sew on their strips before cutting the diamond out...

Another neat thing about sending our own printed diamond pattern to each participant. We can write our color criteria right on the pattern with our names, etc. Talk about organization......

Since we are going to be asking for our color choices, does anyone have a problem with me asking for 30's repros? I know not a lot of people have extra fabric just sitting around, so I could go with black and white if that is the case. I just hate for someone to go out and buy special fabric just for me (not really, but it sounded good, right, lol!).

Ok, i'm on the fence on this one... let me 'talk' outloud to ya'll...
so we cut our own fabric center and with the paper diamond we print off, we mail to everyone on the list that is participating?
isn't this gonna get costly say if 30 people sign up.. thats atleast $18 just to mail them out and then atleast $18 (postage is going up May 12th i believe, but only a penny or something like that) to mail them back home to their owners.
i've never done the F8 swaps so i'm not sure how much all that costs when you mail them all individually. i've only ever mailed to a hostess, or been a hostess. so someone that knows more about this stuff then me, could ya help me out?!!!

Personally, I didn't find the F8 Swaps to be costly...and I spent about a buck-fifty per person mailing to and from...some spent far less (they were smarter than me).
The initial cost for postage to mail the starting envelopes is a lump sum since they are all mailed at once...but the returning blocks are only one at a time...so that was almost not noticable to me.
This swap will be the same principle...
Now, everyone's finances are different...but we don't mail out the envelopes for 3 or 4 more weeks...so I'm pretty sure all could save their change between now and then and have enough for postage...
After all, what's more important!...food, gas, clothing, lodging...Ha!...Give me fabric!
