Wooden Spool Heart
Use your empty wooden spools to create a heartwarming wall decoration. Spray-paint a wooden heart plaque your desired color. Determine the various diameters of your wooden spool tops. Punch circles from patterned paper in sizes to match the spool tops and glue them in place. Adhere spools to the plaque with the tallest at the top and shortest at the bottom. Add patterned paper to thin wooden dowels to fill the spaces between spools.
well....isn't that just cute?!
That sounds like a good activity to do with my Grandgirls this summer. I'm always on the lookout for things for them to create..
l would be unstopable IF l could get started!!!
That's a great use of old spools - love it!
Did you know wooden spools are worth money??? They are a collection piece since they are not made anymore.. I would do this in the plastic and sell my wooden ones, if hadn't already thrown the out..... :
And I would use it as both a studio piece of art and for Valentines!!
That's kind of funny, L.L.
I was thinking about that myself. I do have a collection of wooden spools but not enough to make that plaque. I was thinking I could cover the tops of my plastic spools, after I dig them out of my sewing area trash, with some colorful fabrics and glue them to the board with the wooden ones. It'll give my collection somewhere to be seen and save some trash.
I wouldn't cut up my old ones. Don't they sell new wooden spool shapes in craft stores?
Ah-ha... Yes they do! There you go:
And here are some vintage spool labels to get you started:
That site & The Graphics Fairy site are two places where I get a lot of printable graphics for projects. (Search "sewing" on The Graphics Fairy's site.) But you can look around the Web for more -- just search "vintage spool labels clip art" or "vintage thread labels clip art" and see what comes up. (I'd probably Google search those terms & hit Image Search to see the actual results all in one list.)
Nooooo, I wouldn't cut my spools; I'm even being hesitant about gluing them to the plaque.
Thanx for the sites, Starry.
Print the labels onto fabric? Copy them onto paper? Stitch or fuse or decoupage them to a heart-shaped base of fabric or wood?
You could take this idea & fly with it in all sorts of directions.
