A new high school is being started in Columbus. This fall will be the first year and they are admitting about 100 freshman only. My grandson applied, went through an interview and was accepted. We are so proud of him. He is really excited about school now. There are 25 other schools like it across the US. The students work 5 days a month as an intern at a local business to help pay tuition. Some of you may have one of the schools in your area, they are Cristo Rey schools.
Now to make this board related, they are asking for volunteers to help with mini classes after school. I am thinking about a mini sewing club to teach how to use a sewing machine, repair seams, sew on buttons, how to iron clothes (so they look nice for their jobs) and if enough interest actually make small donation items.

Bet they will jump at the chance to have you for a mini instructor. great idea. Congrats to GS, he wanted something special and wasn't afraid to give it a try. Pat

Awesome Terry...nothing wrong with a proud momma bragging on her child love your idea for the mini classes...even a cooking class would be great for most youngsters since Home Ec. was done away with

Pat, if they accept my mini class I would be willing to take some "donations" of fabric, thread, batting, anything else you would like to get rid of (donate). Maybe that could be the lunch theme for the AQS Show.

What a great opportunity for your DGS. And your idea of a sewing class is such a good idea, especially for boys. They'll be learning work habits and how to take care of themselves in the future. I taught my DS how to use my machine and how to hand sew. He has no qualms about picking up a needle and thread to do his own mending.

Terry congrats to your GS ... what an accomplishment. I think your 'sew' idea is great. All kids need to know how to sew on a button, repair seams and etc. You might throw in how to do laundry.
I emailed the school last night and if there is enough interest it looks like I will teach "life skills". I even suggested a way to use this club to help with the community service requirement.
