I'm redoing my sewing room Roll Eyes Actually, I'm taking over another room and trying to organize my sewing room as well ... now I've expanded to 2 rooms Eek

So ... how do y'all organize your books? Do you do it by author, subject, what?

I've always just been pretty happy with actually getting them in the bookcase, but I have a hard time finding stuff...

So share your tips, so we can all see how it's done Big Grin

My books are in a tall white bookcase (one of those closet organizers you put together yourself), organized alphabetically by title.

The bookcase is filled, so I'm done buying books I guess!

I have two bookcases for magazines. I have a shelf for applique books, another for scrap quilt books, one for baby books, another for Eleanor Burns, one for holidays, one for Milligan & Smith's Possibilities, and two shelves with designs for quilting them. Since I can't remember names of books this works for me. My magazines are stored in two bookcases by the name of the magazines, except holiday magazines and kids magazines have their own shelves. I use lots of small post-it notes for designs I KNOW I'll enjoy making.

I have one bookcase. If it doesn't fit something has to go. There's only so much room.

Quilting books on one shelf...overflow to second shelf with quilting magazines.
Overflow to third shelf ending with knitting.
Excess stuff seldom used on bottom shelf.
However...most used items are to the right on each shelf.

Oh...top of bookshelf has button jars and cans...DSs ceramic teddy bear night-light...Yo-sagi a bunny dress in a red ninja costume that I made for DS when he was little and named bunny after a character on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles...yep they bring a smile to my face every time I look at them.

this is how I store my magazines... I used priority boxes that are USED ... many were from swaps and online orders ... so I just repurpose them for something useful! They fit great in my bookcase and keep organized too Smile

Saved, that's a whole lot cheaper than buying the organizers like that!! I use that kind for some regular magazines. I don't get quilting magazines. My quilt books are on the bottom shelf of the bookcase right beside my machine.

I use old Priority Mail boxes for storage, too. I use them inside cabinets -- cut them down to whatever size I need for the shelf. If it's a high shelf, I'll punch 2 big holes near the front bottom & knot some upholstery cord into them to make a handle for pulling.

I even made a "train" out of some for under the bed -- used nuts & bolts to hold them together & added a handle. That way I can pull them all out at once & push them back in when done -- no wasted space.

Yes, I am a total cheapskate when it comes to some things around here. More money to spend on fabric! Big Grin

I have very few magazines/books & they are stored in one of those plastic, stackable containers. My stash is stored in those to by color so I can see the colors through the plastic.

Since I have so few books & I go through them a lot I sort of know which drawer they are in & can usually find what I need pretty quick. I like your method with the mail boxes.

I have a couple of those skinny white shelving units (the ones from O'Sullivan that you put together). I sort my books and magazines by type. On one, I have all of my dolls stuff on one shelf, beading and jewelry on another, crochet on a third, needlework on the fourth. The other, smaller unit has three shelves of nothing but quilting, including the full two binder set of the Oxmoor House Publishing Company compilation of quilt patterns. I usually go through my newly (within the past 3 months) purchased magazines in the living room every so often and put them onto their respective shelves. Of course, almost all of the shelves are full by this time. Smile

I've tried several variations - recently it is organized by "subject" (scrap quilting, small projects, etc.) The magazines are drowning me - I've been sending them to new homes - I need to do it again. I love getting them but frankly, I've gone back to one of them maybe twice. I used to mark the pages I thought warranted another look but that has not worked either. I'm thinking of donating some of them to my doctor's office so I'll have something to look at when I'm there Smile

The priority boxes remind me...Back when laundry detergent was in boxes I cut some down like that then covered them with decorative paper. Big Grin Keeps them standing up.
