what button cookies? Anything chocolatey would work - or do you mean something with a sewing theme?

the cookies look wonderful, are they peanut butter and how did you make the holes in them. In our retreats, the healthy snacks always go last, depending on how close you are to the retreat site, strawberries dipped in chocolate would really be outstanding but they don't last long. If you really wanted to go all out, glue the strawberries with chocolate on a cone shape styrofoam form which has been covered in waxed paper. Fill in any spaces with chocolate dipped pineapple. We also make gorp, dump several bags of candy, pretzels and nuts into one huge bowl, also the chex mix is popular.
i added the link above the pic on how to make them. i use the betty crocker peanutbutter cookie mix. you make an identation with a water bottle cap and use the end of a straw to poke the holes. you can only make 15 at a time because they cool fast and u can't get the straw in. usually i just make two holes becuz the straw fills up with mix. have a few handy. i don't cover them with chocolate, overkill in my opinion.

I Googled "sewing themed cookies" and then did the Image search button. Saw some cute things - spools, quilt squares, thimbles, etc. You might want to have a look.
"Sewing Themed cakes" had some cute things, too. Cupcakes anyone?

My Mom used to make checkerboard chocolate/vanilla refrigerator cookies. Putzy, but oh so good. You make the dough then take half the dough and make it chocolate. Shape into 4 bars 2 vanilla, 2 chocolate stack them into a single bar. chocolate vanilla then the vanilla next to the chocolate. The recipe is in the Betty Crocker old cookbook. Have fun at your retreat. the cookie comes out as 4 patch.

Then there is always stack and whack cookies. Buy the Pillsbury ready made dough with a design--like they probably have Valentines now. Cut them like stack and whack and carefully place together on cookie sheet and bake.
But, those buttons rock!

Here's some button cookies using a flower shaped cutter. Think of other shape possibilities. Wonder if you could sew the buttons with some of that red string licorice?
cute ideas ladies...love the button cookies...now I'm hungry!
Only thing I can think of off the top of my head is cupcakes lightly iced then topped with skewers/toothpicks that have buttons or thimbles glued on...be sure to use non toxic glue. Cheap and fun...if your a button fanatic like me lol
I could probably even do fruit muffins, and find coordinating buttons for at least lemon, banana, cherry, and blueberry...
Paus, love the turnover, honeybun idea...too cute and FUNThis message has been edited. Last edited by: Kentucky_Sunshine,

A dab of icing could be used as the glue. You could probably make buttons for decorations on goodies with fondant in the same way you make the button cookies, only smaller.
What about two different squares of cheese cut in half diagonally and put back together to make HSTs?
If you're not looking for sewing themed goodies, I would strongly recommend the small pretzel twists with Rolos melted on them and topped with a pecan half. They are some kind of good and take practically no time to make. This message has been edited. Last edited by: paus4quilts,
mmmmmm rolos been years since I've had them, even looked in the stores when I was home and didn't find them...only caramel I get here is if I boil it up myself

i made the button cookies for a group once and one guy leaned over and said, next time make zippers! i wasn't necessarily thinking of a sewing related snack, but just something small to share. i have to travel a distance to the retreat so i was looking for ideas on favorites. Jell-o shots are out of the question, tho that is my specialty.

No suggestion here but just a comment. The first retreat I went to was attended by about 10 people. We worked 2 at each table and had one whole table just for all the snacks we brought! However, our meals were so delicious and we were working on our quilts so hard that we didn't eat many snacks.
good idea paus...and even flour tortillas spread with cream cheese and topped with ham and then a green onion...rolled up and sliced into pinwheels...
or the same thing but topped with turkey and a smer of cranberry sauce (I can purchase it in a squeeze bottle) down the center, then rolled up and sliced. quick and easy...no cooking involved...gotta love those snacks!

Tried the button cookies. I even bought her Suggested mix but it didn't work. They weren't smooth and i couldn't poke the holes. They were gobbled up anyway.
Some great ideas here! LOVE the buttons... Paus you are such a creative thinker!!! A couple of Christmas ago a friend made Oreo truffles...easy too dump a package of Oreo Cookies in a food processor bowl process until crumbly add 8oz. pkg cream cheese process until smooth Refrigerate until cold through roll into balls and roll balls into cocoa powder! Quite yummy...

Last week I hosted a pinochle club party and one of the "treats" was a bar of cream cheese on a plate, peach and mango salsa spooned over it with different crackers on the side. Talk about EASY and everyone liked it--at least it was all gone by the end of the afternoon!!!

there will be no oven and no refrigerator, so some of those snacks won't be possible. i ended up making two batches of cookies to share and a bottle of wine.
evelyn, i don't understand why the cookies didn't work for you. did u follow the instructions on bakerella's site.

The secret to taking a food item somewhere where there is no refrigeration or it will be sitting out.
Put ice into another container, set the food item on/in it's own dish into that container. As in a large mixing bowl with a smaller bowl inside it. Works wonderfully. Cupcake and cake carriers are terrific for this trick. Really good idea for dips.
