I need your help. I want to make a quilt like the one on the Brit comedy As Time Goes By. Looks like 12 inch windmill blocks.. I have looked for instructions but to no avail. Can anyone help me?? just how do I make a 12" windmill block? ![]()

Make four 6 inch (finished) HST's.

Here is a site: http://www.multi-patch.com/html/windmill_pattern.html Here is another one, different block design but they both are called windmill. http://quilting.about.com/od/q...n-s-Puzzle-Quilt.htm Hope these can get you started. I have a hard time seeing in the picture which version of block they are using. Madelyn

I agree, looks like a typical 12 1/2 unfinished(12" finished) pinwheel block setting ...pinwheel to pinwheel. May "In Michigan"

Besides large pinwheels, it also looks like there are some hourglass blocks in that particular quilt. I wish I could see it better. For pinwheels, I agree, just make Half Square Triangles and sew them together. If the others are hourglass blocks, you can start with making blocks from HSTs first, then lay them together right sides together, opposite colors matching, and sew and cut again. You'll get the hourglass block. Just be sure the squares for the hourglass Quarter Sq Tris are larger, 1 1/2"larger than the finished block size before you begin. If your finished blocks are 6" (which means 6 1/2" before sewing them together), then the starting sqs need to be 7 1/2" square. You will square them up to the proper 6 1/2" when you are done. I'm sure someone else can put the drawings on this thread for you. Sorry, but I'm not techy enough to do that.

I thought they were hour glass also...but after studying each block and following what I could see in the rows decided they were all pinwheels. May "In Michigan"

I enlarged the photo and it does seem all the blocks are windmills. Some of them are done scrappy instead of just one color.

This blogger thinks it's a Broken Dishes pattern and I think she might be right. http://www.delawarequilts.com/MyQuilts/BedQuilts.html Here is a link to the Broken Dishes pattern in Quilter's Cache. It looks like you would have to convert it into a 24" block instead of 12". http://www.quilterscache.com/B/BrokenDishesBlock.html The blue and white image is from the Quilter's Cache pattern site. ![]()

Looks like broken dishes to me also. Looks like a good scrap buster pattern.

i just love that show "As time goes By"

it looks like Half Square Triangles (HST) that are placed to look like either pinwheels, hourglass, or just random placements.. could use a design wall to get to your placement just how you want it.. i think the warm colors used make it a comforting looking quilt.. also, it is your quilt.. so square the HSTs to what ever size you want, as long as they are all the same size.. if you are not worried about it being exactly a 12 inch or 18 inch blocks.. Hugs, Waves, Smiles, & Prayers God bless you all and may sunshine always be in your lives to brighten your days.. San

I guess it could be broken dishes, or pinwheels, or whatever. What throws me is the placement of some fabrics so they form the pinwheels and the use of the same background fabrics, or appearance of the same in the recognizable 'pinwheel' blocks. As a quilter we can play wonderful games with our placements to achieve many looks. I believe the decision is yours, Quiltnanny.

http://buckinghamroad.blogspot...e-goes-by-quilt.html The URL above is a blog where the blogger's MIL is making the quilt for herself. As Paus says I too think the blocks are pinwheels but some are scrappy that appear to be hourglass "People are like stained-glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in, their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within." Elizabeth Kubler-Ross
