I've used Essential horizontally in my machine but wondered if it should really be used vertically??? something about the way thread is wound. anyone??? I'm wanting to do FMQ today.

I've used it for years vertically only.

I'm considering getting some Essential threads and now that you bring it up, what's the difference? I have both a horizontal and vertical spindle.

I always thought that the crisscross wound spools need to be on horizontal spindles to unwind better.

My Janome Dealer says it does not matter anymore.I use it both ways depends on which machine I'm using...I love this thread...

according to superior threads, cones, which are criss cross wound, should be fed off the top..ie, from a cone holder.

my thread holders, on both of my machines,are vertical regardless. I have never had a problem with my set ups. I just ordered a cone of essential thread last week. (plus a kit of the new red line of fabric! I needed to buy the cone to get the free shipping...thats my story and i am sticking to it!

I use a vertical spindle with my cross wound threads - both cones and spools. I think that is fine as long as the thread goes UP from the thread/cone. Some machines have an vertical arm with thread guides that provides a path for the thread to travel upwards as it leaves the spool or cone. Otherwise there are thread stands like Kim mentioned or one can just place the thread in a jar behind the machine as was discussed in an earlier thread.

ETA an example of a cross wound cone in use on a machine that has an elevated thread guide so the thread leaves the cone going up.

thanks all. i used the thread vertically for some straight stitching and for some FMQ too. I had a tiny bit of trouble doing small circles FMQ. heard a noise about three times. i stopped, cut threads and started over. worked but not sure why.
Essential threads to tend to have slubs at times. I"m hating that. i really think when I use them all up(have a lot) i won't buy anymore.

Maybe try a larger eye needle for the essential...
