Grandson asked me to make a baby quilt for their future baby. Sex unknown. My problem is he said for the color that her favorite color is Plum,sorta like eggplant. His is grass green. What and how can these colors be the main colors with some others to go with. I'm at a total loss.

Hmmm, if they want to incorporate both of those colors, you may be in need of some fabric shopping. My first thought was to pair those colors with a cream or light tan and find a quilt block or blocks that look good with three colors.

I went to quiltshops.com and searched "plum grass" and found the following batik. If you find a fabric that you like with both colors in it, you could use that in the border, incorporate it into the blocks or both.

Lisa- I think I have that batik in my stash or something that looks close to it. Sewdream, I agree you could use softer colors to blend with that batik. Hope you find what you need. Sue

Purple & green play very nicely together, both being on the "cool" side of the color wheel. You could accent with an eggshell-y white or light tan & call it quits for the color scheme. That could be a very sophisticated look.

Purple also gets along well with yellow, since they're opposite each other on the color wheel. You could add that if you wanted a non-gender specific "baby" color. You could also use the true green but add a lighter green, which again would look nice with the purple. Just watch you don't have yellow-based green and blue-based green clashing with each other. Keep the greens one or the other. (Mint green is often blue-based; spring green is usually more yellow-based.)

You could also go with the color between green & purple, blue, but with a turquoise version. An eggplant shade towards red-purple looks good with that color. A yellowy leafy green looks good with it, too.

If you're very confused, you can either look at a color wheel or spectrum online, or go to the paint store & gather some paint chips to play with.

Plum/Eggplant might be your hardest color to find in fabric (my stash of those is not as large as my other colors), so I'd start by trying to find that fabric, and then find green + another color (or 2?) to play along.

Maybe user his colors as ascent to the softer colors, his colors will then pop. Like binding etc.

What a great opportunity to make a modern quilt that a young person would love! Plum and green are great together. Go to the quilt shop and tell them you want those colors plus soft yellow. Do Drunkards Path or circles. Very geometric and young. Try a new pattern with the new colors. Get a beautiful variegated thread to quilt it with. I've used these colors often. I think Superior has a great thread.

There are beautiful batiks in these colors and with a pale yellow flannel backing it would be awesome!

I have fabric with both the purple and green in the design. Very sharp. You could use that Urban Cabin block that was shown on this forum a couple day ago (I think she was looking for border suggestions for it)

Just be cause this quilt is being made for a baby sized person, doesn't mean that the quilt has to be baby-ish in design. Bright, bold colors and designs are great. That family will truly love the quilt made for them with their colors and style in mind instead of the Victorian era mindset that only certain colors or designs are for a certain aged person.

I agree that purples and greens go very well together. And I don't think baby quilts need to be limited to pastels or traditional colors or motifs. This sounds like a great opportunity to make a wonderful quilt.

You've already been given great suggestions about the color and I don't have anything to add to that. But I do have a suggestion about size. Since these colors are not what we older quilters consider "baby colors," I suggest making the quilt a little larger - more of a toddler size.

Purple and green are gorgeous together, I totally agree with everyone else but in my opinion, you are not making the quilt for the parents, you are making it for the unborn child, so I would make it whatever color and whatever pattern that inspired me, you are making a gift from your heart for an unborn child, and I'm sure it will be loved when you get it finished. If you choose to keep their colors in mind, the ladies have given you some great tips

My DD gave me a color selector color wheel for Christmas this year & I'm still learning how to use it. It's showing that two colors that work well with eggplant are yellows & also greens & oranges. We would love to see the finished project.

Evelyn has designed some perfect examples. The colors are lovely together and not too masculine or feminine.

I could swear I saw a plum color on connecting threads or you could try Hancock's of Paducah. They keep a good selection for all the quilters but they do tend to be slow and if it isn't in stock I've had them just cancel the order.
also check country home quilters I saw a few that may work. There is nothing that says it has to be more than 2 colors.

Now to do some practice runs, when I find my templates. Oh how I hate it when I clean up and put things away so that I know where they are when needed. Hope I can find the templates soon, so I can go shopping for fabric. Yikes

The bottom of this curtain is the teal, gold, purple etc and the top is gold with the eggplant, I guess you'd call it. Just for color purposes.

Lots of good help and suggestions. In my mind's eye; i think aqua/turquoise would go well with plum/eggplant/aubergine and grass green.
