Being a West coast native and never having traveled to the Northeast...I'm hoping for some advice. I'm on a tight budget, and found that airfare into Pittsburgh is about 1/2 the cost of flying into Harrisburg. It looks to be about a 2 hour drive from Pittsburg to Harrisburg. Does anyone know if there is a way to get between the two (trains, busses?) that has easy to access from the airport? My other thought would be to rent a car but not sure that makes sense. I would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks

I would say it is closer to 4 hours driving. It would take almost an hour to go from airport to interstate 80 and then another 3 at least to get across the state. Pennsylvania is a huge state across it. What about flying into Philadelphia?

The Lehigh Valley International Airport is about 90 minutes from Harrisburg according to their website. I don't know how the prices are for flying in and out of there these days but it used to be a much less expensive alternative to the airport in Philadelphia.

Check out the airport in Philadelphia. Not sure about the distance but there is train, bus, air and cab service to . And of course you could rent a car. I'm thinking it's about 1 and 1/2 hrs.

Warm Buns is flying into Philly. Maybe you can co-ordinate your flight times w/ hers. Or you can take Amtrack from Philly to Harrisburg pretty cheaply.

Flying into the ABE (Lehigh Valley/Allentown PA) is less expensive for me and I'm coming from ID. And it is only an hour and a half drive to the hotel; nice scenery enroute. Pittsburgh is four hours drive. And from personal experience, you don't want to go into Philly. Getting out of there is via the 'Sure Kill Highway'. It didn't get it's name because it is a nice drive.

In either case, a rental car would be needed.

I'll be returning to the Allentown area to visit with family so going in that way is a good idea. Now to find a rental I can afford.

Thanks for all of the advice. I meant Philadelphia not Pittsburgh...I also just remembered that Lori had some travel tips on the blog. That answered some of my questions! I just checked rates into Harrisburg and they have dropped considerably. I don't get paid for another week. Once I have my money I'll have to see what is the best way to go.

yay! I'm glad someone is making use of the info I post on the blog Smile

Another possibility is you could fly in to Newark (EWR) and ride with me. But you would have to adhere to my schedule and share a ride with Jane_kiwi and Kiwi_Sue... Tuesday - Monday. The up side is I would let you use my truck to go and do whatever you want while I am working on the retreat!

Lori, that is such a generous offer. Not sure I can come in that early but will keep it as an option. Thank you.

Another flight option is Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, PA, then rent a car for approx 2 hr drive.

Sounds like you've gotten some real good advice here.

paus, where in Idaho are you? I'm in Colfax, WA (near Moscow ID)
I went to Harrisburg/Allentown area last year. I enjoyed it so much.
Glad everyone was good help. I already booked by flights and am using Amex points, makes all that college tuition worth it.
