I'm beginning to have a bunch of small quilts done and am perplexed as to where and how to store them. I'd love a cabinet full of beautiful folded quilts to show, but these aren't big enough. Some are to be switched out for different places and I'm running out of wall space to hang them all. I thought of rolling some of the small ones up, tying them with a bow and putting them in a basket...that would work for some of them. I've made 5 of them into doll quilts...so at least I know those go to Niki!

How do you store your finished quilts?

When you said small, I thought about my wallhanging size quilts. I have those laid flat in drawers under the bed in my son's old room. He had a homemade captain's bed that he didn't take with him when he moved out. The drawers are shallow but they are huge -- they take up the whole underside of the bed & give me lots of quilt storage space. The inside of the drawers are painted, or else I would have lined them with something non-reactive. I would never store my quilts against unfinished wood.

What about using those big acid-free boxes they store wedding gowns in? I'll bet a good cleaner could help you get them, or they're sold online somewhere.

Hanging from skirt hangers with clips in the closet and between the mattress $ box springs.

I've got doll size,24'x 36"ish size for a shelf with a rod, tablerunners and cardtable size.

I did have a thought after posting to get some skirt hangers (that hold multiple skirts) and clip a bunch together. I could make a muslin cover to keep the dust off...

I could make a lot of work for myself...bwahahaha. I like the box under the bed idea...would love to have a captain's bed!!!

i have a chest that i use to store mine, like a cedar chest but it;s not cedar, and the ones that don't fit i have in those big seal bags that use suck the air out of with a vaccum

Only thing I'd worry about with the skirt clips would be to make "dents" in the quilts that might be hard to remove later. Oh, and maybe the weight of hanging over the years.

Edit - I mean hanging on the 2 skirt hanger clips instead of having the weight distributed over the whole quilt, like in a hanging sleeve.

I could move the little ones around so all edges had matching dents. Maybe the pants hangers with little rods...

Our grandmothers did have chests at the foot of the bed for special dresses and linens. Is yours a special one Patsy?

I have lots of holiday small quilts. I've got them stored between the mattress and box springs in my guest room. They stay perfectly flat and clean. I just have to remember where they are. I also store some table runners. I prefer that over hanging in my closets.

Like the idea of between the mattress - but doesn't that get a little thick after awhile and hard to lift the mattress and search/sort for a quilt? Really like the captains bed..nice.

Small door/wall quilts are kept on skirt hangers. Figured the door hangings wouldn't be kept that long to worry about dents, since they get faded from hanging on the door and would have to be replaced after a few seasons.

So far there hasn't been any visible dents.

Larger quilts are kept in a cedar chest.

ohhh, Nancy, I love the idea of sending them to me for the Christmas project....that's the best thing to do with them.

I only have a few small quilts/mug rugs, etc. & I like to display them on my design board when it's not in use. I also have a quilt rack with 4 slats to hang big quilts on & I put a few on the slats on top of the big quilts.

I designed the captain's bed so not one square inch of storage space would be wasted, and it worked. You should have seen those drawers during the years they were filled to the brim with Legos & little toys! Then they held sheets & blankets & yearbooks & graduation caps. Now they hold quilts. But every now & then, when I slide open a drawer to get out a quilt or put one away, I ~almost~ miss the Lego years. But I like these years, too, and I'm glad the bed stayed here.

I went to sleep dreaming of making little stuffed muslin rolls to wrap the quilts around tied with a bow...then little muslin zippered or buttoned covers...my last thought was to roll them up in silverware drawers.

Working in my sleep!!! No product when I woke up!

You know if you put them in a drawer, hang them in a closet or hide between a mattress and boxspring no one will ever see them, I would roll them up and put them in a basket. I have monthly quilted panels that I hang on my front door and I keep them rolled in a basket under my dining room buffet. Then people can see them and they add some color. Too much hard work to not show them.

I'm sitting in my chair in the den and from here I can see eight quilts and four table runners. I'm living in my own padded cells! I do, however, have a corner that would be perfect for a quilt case. I keep checking them out at quilt shows. I want the perfect size so I may have one built. But my small quilts will stay under the mattress.

ps I do ask DH and DS to lift off the mattress so I can get to the quilts. It also allows me to move the box springs to get to the dust bunnies. With cats I get black hair balls.

Finished quilts? I wouldnt even know what those were I think I have about 40 UFOs tho! These suggestions will be handy when they are done
