Ladies, I have been out of town and finally am home. Don't fret over my blocks, just do what you think will look good. I was kind of going for a tropical look, with some florals. And in looking at the questions, batiks and tone on tone could be ok too.
I think the big thing was I wanted NO pinks, purples or browns.
And I am going to be sewing today.

Washed more muslin to cut squres for the "next one" then I got to puttering and ended up with a stack of blocks that did not make it into the quilt from the last swap turned into a table runner for my sister and a table mat for my mother....the runner is sandwiched and ready to quilt...the table mat just as the top done so far. Now...how cool is that

I have finally gotten a start...baby steps... found my brights .. and bright batiks .. and some browns ... still mia from the move are the "ocean" batiks and the browns I got in a swap just before the move. My project for tomorrow is locating the bin that all those fabrics are in!!
Have just finished up 3 sets. My goal is to get at least 5 done this week and the remaing 5 sets done next week. Haven't sewed since going to COF until this week since I have been visiting, running around, shopping, etc.
And I have a questions for Royalboomer. I got that the center string is dark brown. The rest of the strings, Assorted browns - no super lights but some light/mediums would be OK. Mix 'em up. Think: everybody is playing nicely and no one is trying to steal the stage.
Are those brown strings, tone on tone or can I mix in some small prints.
Let me know when you have a chance.
Mary

They can be tone-on-tones or small prints - look at them all together - if the print yells out "Look at me, I'm prettier than the rest" that one should not go in That happens most often when the print has a different color in it that draws the eye like red, etc. Don't fret though - this should be fun - what doesn't work in one project will work in another....

I've made good progress in the blocks, even though I haven't found the fabrics I set aside before the move for the swap .. I may have to go shopping for ocean colors...oh darn :{
Aliquilt - I didn't move and had the same issue. I remembered buying all sorts of 1/2 yd cuts of the various fabrics for this swap and then when it came time to actually use them couldn't find them anywhere!! On a positive note: I had plenty to choose from despite being annoyed at not being able to find the bag they were in - and it got me to do some cleaning.....I found them I swear I looked in that bag but it must have been my imagination I can now see the DGD' craft table top once again.

Working on my last set. Gosh my table looks like a tornado hit it! Can't wait to get them finished!! All the color combos are so pretty-makes it hard to pick a favorite. I guess I just like them all!!
Have been working on the blocks and have 6 sets finished. I like them all. I am going to work on them again today and hope to get 2 more sets finished. Would like to get them in the mail. Mary

Down to my last set which is for Alex. Got a question-when you say violet-thats like a medium-dark purple. So you want red in the middle and all blue and purple strings on the sides right?
Pam, yes'm...that was my hope...some sort of a medium-to-dark red for the center and medium-to-light blues and lavenders for the strings...any prints or solids...just no darks or neons please
OK - I'm not able to see very well today - the drops in my eyes this time last for 24 hours so I can see really big stuff and hope that I type ok....here's the two small projects that used up the remainder of the blocks from one of the previous string swaps. One is a table runner and one is a table mat...eventually I'll even get the quilt top (done) sandwiched and ready to quilt but that won't be for awhile
Ideas of simple ways to quilt these would be greatly appreciated. Might as well use the built-in walking foot on the darned machine

And a portion of the runner - don't know where the fullsize picture went and can't see well enough to locate it in the computer now.....you get the general idea. the full size has 4 blocks. they kind of look like ornaments in the the runner don't you think

Cool Boomer! And yes they do like look like ornaments.
Just finished my last set-need to trim them down. DS came and took the bed and the long dresser from the guest room. Lots of quilt fabric in the dresser and thread etc. So now, ironing board is covered, cutting table is covered and it's all stacked up again-grrrrrrr.
HRMPH! well I've ironed on the floor before and will knock stuff off my cutting table!! I've got to get my studio moved upstairs so it will be hands off to everybody!
My family thinks I'm a hoarder-anybody else hear that??
LindaBoomer, what lovely little pieces! Thanks for sharing the pix. Makes me oh-so anxious to get my newest blocks home and play with them!
I was at a quilt retreat this weekend and finally (after 3 years of the blocks just sitting) got my string blocks put together into two sweet little baby quilts. I will get pix of the tops and post the pix. It is very helpful to see what others have for colors in strings and how they look put together (for my little brain anyway!)
Alex - they are just beautiful. Strings sure are addicting. I have another stack to turn into a quilt top - all blues. I had it all laid out at one time but I'll have to start from scratch now I do have the top put together with all the greens but haven't got it sandwiched yet. Still trying to decide whether or not to use batting or just a backing. The intended recipient has an internal furnace that doesn't quit so cooler is better than warmer
Pam - you definitely need to get your sewing area moved Hoarder....???? you...nahhhh!This message has been edited. Last edited by: royalboomer,

I'm making progress, except for "ocean" .. still haven't found what I already had set aside for them..one more look tonight and I'll shop tomorrow to supplement what I've already sewn. Browns--were almost finished and I found the brown swap I was going to use (darn batiks weren't with them!!) Bright batiks, brights with various centers...down to last strip or so on each block. Found more light blues/violets for the cq blocks. The teal/turquoise have me stumped, each has a couple strips, I'll probably pick them up tomorrow-since they'll somewhat fit into the "ocean" theme. I have plenty of florals, but most were colors not requested but I think I've found suitable lovely flowers, I hope!!!
Mailed my blocks! CBQ-post office says you should have by Tuesday. I'm sending you a pm with confirmation #. Mailed 2day. Was going last night but DS said "No! Are you crazy? You'll get mugged!" So needless to say I thought better of it!
Can't wait to see all the pretties. This was fun!
I ha*te typing on my Kindle-it changes the words!!!!
Half the sets are finished, the rest are within a string or two being done. Another death in the family geezzz...anyway, I'll be at the post office Tuesday after dropping gks at school. Can't wait to see everyone's gorgeous blocks!
SO excited! I do hope everyone post pix of their string blocks laid out when they are returned home...anxious to see how they all turned out and how the blocks play together!
Back from post office, sent piority, will PM confirmation #. Didn't get there as early as I hoped, as I was trimming and counting, I somehow managed to lose 2 finished blocks!! Sooooo, had to make new ones. How 2 finished 12 1/2" blocks can disappear is beyond me ?!?!?!
