I've wanted to make this quilt for a long time, but I'm kind of torn between making it in pastels with white background or deep jewel tones on black or even autumn tones on a taupe. So many choices and I pretty much have enough scraps to do just about any colorway I want.
I wanted to do something unique on the back, and there were enough blocks to float them on the backing.
This is the front of Mary's quilt. Mary is Angela's mom and Clare's grandma. Both quilts were jewel box blocks like this on the front, with the floating blocks on the back.
A few years ago I participated in a fabric swap with some friends - I think we swapped 5 or 6 inch strips. Here's the jewel box top I made from mine. I donated it to a Relay for Life team for them to quilt and raffle. I like it in these colors but in my opinion this pattern looks best in 30s prints! This message has been edited. I think you might be right, which would probably look awesome on my furniture. So I think I'll just start pulling the pastels and old prints and see how much I have and what I might need to fill in. I like the darker ones, but I think some patterns just look better with certain types of fabric.
They are all beautiful - thank you so much for sharing with me.
I'm a bit late with this but - I made a mini jewel box with really bright brights on white. Looking at the pictures shared, I think I might just put a more subdued version in my to do list.
Here's my bright mini.

Here's a close up (to better see the quilting) of a jewel box I made for a baby quilt. Her nursery colors are orange, yellow and green. The mama recently told me she loves to take her baby outside with the quilt, but the bees are attracted to it too. This message has been edited. Last edited by: SeeingStars,
Posted May 25, 2012 08:59 PM Hide Post I've seen the ones with bright fabrics on black and they are gorgeous. Just depends on the look you want.
I hadn't considered that variation. So went looking and found that Jinny Beyer has a kit for one with black background. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Bozie,

Actually, many of Jinny Beyer's color combinations make my heart go pitty-pat! Now I have an urge to make a mini version of her Jewel Box Palette quilt. Have been doing some shopping - found some good online prices for the fabrics.......
Talk about enablers. Between Sew Happy's Moon Glow that sent me browsing in Jinny's patterns and katiemedarlin's question about jewel box quilts I have a plan for another little quilt. Thanks gals!

oh, I do love the Jewel Box pattern... The 30's are so nice for this pattern...but that black b/g is so luscious...guess I'll have to add them to my want to do list and live a few years longer than I was so I can finish...LOL Can't wait to see your idea BozieThis message has been edited. I made on about 12 years ago and don't have a picture on this computer. I used rich jewel tones with white background. The colors really were a great sharp contrast on it. I'll see if I can get a picture here for you.
ETA: Sorry, I don't have a picture of it to share here, I don't think I will get one very quickly from the nephew who has it.This message has been edited. Last edited by: quilting wifey,

Love the quilts-all are so beautiful!! I have never made one of these-are they an easy patern? Where best to find the pattern?
Love the birds! Especially the one little guy has his leg up on the apple-priceless!!
FFG-didn't realize-white eye until you said so! I need a book for birds for my area. A Mockingbird built a long round nest in my hammock (it was folded up). She had 8 babies. We watched daily as she came and fed. And then got to watch as each flew off. One little guy had a terrible time! He tried to fly but couldn't and was trying to get back in-hanging by one outstretched leg (hanging on for dear life!) I told DD to put some towels down in case he fell and hit the deck. But he finally made it! They were entertaining to say the least!
I'm not sure I could make one with a black background - although I do like the look and with minis there isn't that much waste even in the case of dismal failure. I AM serious about making a mini version of the palette version. Most of the fabrics should be here maybe on Thursday........

Jinny Beyer has incredible color sense. I can't wait to see your mini with that palette.
As much as I want to make a pastel version of this quilt to go with my Art Deco furniture, I know me pretty well and I can almost guarantee I'll be making a black background with jewel tones. I am always drawn to those colors and I just love black and use it in almost all of my quilts.
Here is one I finished this year. It is made with a group of 15 modern looking fat quarters plus a very bright white fabric and solid border. I will post 3 pictures of it.

Gorgeous!! I love the black background and the modern fabrics as well. I'll put those ideas with the 30's blocks all made up and waiting so very patiently. They were initially intended for DGD quilt but then she changed her color favorites - she ended up with brights and black - about as far from 30's as you can get At least her quilt was done before she changed again....

Florida Girl, I love your blog! I wish I could claim the photo as mine, but alas it is from another. I really like this little bird, could you tell me what kind it is?
Judging by the "AndreaEL" in the bottom right corner of the picture I believe joobee's picture was taken in New Zealand by AndreaEL http://www.redbubble.com/people/andreael

Don't go getting all impressed yet, Stars!!!! On her website, AndreaEL calls this bird a Silvereye. And I'm certainly not knowledgeable enough to dispute her identification. The only thing I've ever seen that it resembled was the Japanese White-Eye that I saw in Hawaii. Just another of those examples of birds that look similar enough to be d*nged hard to correctly ID!!!!!!
It always amazes me that such a simple pattern can look so beautiful. Lovely work quilters. And such colors. Lovely. Here's a scrap cuddler I made for my son....
I've always wanted to make a Jewel Box quilt too. Don't know about Katie but all these pictures are making it harder for me to decide on the color combination. Great quilts everyone. Guess I'll have to make a couple. Would be a good way to use up scraps.
I was so excited, I'm half way thru with my first jewel box and love it. THEN I came on here to look at the ones pictured. WELL I'LL BE !!! I have designed my own by mistake. My two whites are on the outside and not inside - in the middle of each side. Mine forms a white square where the pattern forms a 4 patch. Not taking it apart - now may have to make a 2nd jewel box someday. LOL No mistakes in quilting, right??? LOL Thank goodness NO quilt police here! This message has been edited. Vicki, Look at the bottom right corner on quiltbea's quilt. It's got a four patch turned a different way too. It's easy to do. I discover those when I take a photo. Sometimes I notice them as I finish quilting them but leave it alone. These are all absolutely gorgeoue! Evelyn
I will share when the quilt is ready to be quilted. The good thing about messing up is now there are white squares throughout the quilt just waiting for a special quilting design! It's just a design opportunity IMHO! ;-) It is my very own jewel box variation! LOLThis message has been edited. Last edited by: vickiquilts,

Well as usual, you ladies have come to the rescue. I received an order from Connecting Threads yesterday, 10 sherbet colors and a black/white print. I have a baby girl quilt to make for baby Grace, born last week and I just spent a couple of hours flipping through books and magazines unable to make up my mind.
Tada...now I know what I am going to make. My switch has been flipped, so to speak! Thanks!
