So, just to prove I CAN finish a quilt....it is laid out on the kitchen floor awaiting pinbasting.....

I had a friend approach me and want to buy this quilt....she wants it for her mother for mother's day and I was quite torn on how much to ask for it. I know I am not making minimum wage......

Does anyone else have trouble pricing quilts?

Oh it's lovely. not sure of size but maybe $75.00 at least? I doubt the lady who wanted to buy it would realize the "real" cost of quilts. Discuss this with her and go from there.

That is beautiful! Didn't you piece all of those birds? If it was just a 'panel' of each bird I would say $75 would be fine. But, I think I have seen you post the individual blocks. If so, I would definitely ask for much more than $75. More like $275 or more even.

Yeah, those are pieced birds....and you are in my ballpark Grami.....Nativetexan is far more generous than I am....lol

I was thinking $250 or more..don't sell that quilt for $75! That's not enough...that barely covers supplies!

In nativetexan's defense, maybe she didn't know they were individually pieced. Sometimes hard to tell from pic.

I have made 'quick quilts' using square panels that take no time at all, and usually were from stash of fabric found at resale shops, etc. For a friend, something like that, I would sell for $75 or $100. BUT, the excellent paper piece work you have put into this quilt top alone, nevermind the quilting and binding still to be done, makes just the top worth hundreds

If it was mine, I wouldn't be able to part with it. (tell her $300 for one for 2013 Mother's Day. And make another LOL

PS Is the middle block on top a humming bird? I am looking for a pattern for one. Could you share where you got it if that is a hummer?

Hi Stillsuzz,

I don't ordinarily post to questions but in this case I can give you some of my guidelines since I have been doing quilts for many years and have on occassion sold them.

I generally go by size -- 9 square baby $35-$50 -- 12 square lap $40-$75 -- Twin $100-$150 -- Queen $200-$250 -- King $350-$500 and up. These are general prices and not very difficult work. But let's be realistic in saying you put in a lot of time and work in each quilt and yes a lot of love. You will generally know if the person is sincere or just looking for a good deal. Also by knowing the cost of the materials -- fabric, batting, backing and then trippling the costs it gives you an idea of charges. Also by visiting fairs etc. and checking them this helps. I have been to Amish quilt fairs and have seen King size quilts that start at $1000. Granted they do more hand work but a quilt is a quilt. Hope this helps Quilter Chris -- Chris Holub

What a lovely quilt!!!! I have the pattern book with lots of birds, but never gotten started.

$200 or better. I once took a baby quilt for a grand-niece to work to show off and was asked to place a price on it. Don't remember what I told her but I want to say $150. She blinked really hard.

#1 It was not a simple pattern and I worked really hard to make it "work."

#2 It was made specifically for my niece's baby. Even though I had time to make another, I did not look forward to it at all and probably would've picked a simpler pattern...not to mention having to buy more fabric.

Hmmm...perhaps $150 was not enough at that. LOL Oh...co-worker did not buy it so grand-niece got it after all.

I think most of the quilts we make are just priceless.....maybe that's what it all comes down to....lol

Fancy work takes lots of time....we just CAN'T be paid enough........

I AGREE we put so much time money and skill into making them and 75 is not enough unless you are just selling the top.......... and it is adorealbe. Imade each of my great nieces that is 3 girls and 1 great nephew a quilt all machined embroidery and quilted they were gifts. But Like you I don't know how to price them and some people don't understand the work that goes into making them.

That's a beautiful quilt & I wouldn't sell it for less than $300. It looks like you put a lot of precious time in it.

That looks like a Ruby Throated Hummingbird in the top middle block.

That top turned out wonderful. Love the birds. I really need to do one of these.

No input on pricing.

For anyone who has never tried paper piecing, oh, please do. I taught myself from a book, but have started two new quilters by showing them....the limitless patterns, the detail....it is wonderful.

Elainetoo, you have finished your "Sylvia" and I am in awe of you for that. We know THEY are priceless!

I don't know how you could part with that quilt..You have done them so beautifully...

Wonderful job paper-piecing, too! One can achieve such precision details... once you get your head wrapped around the technique of paper-piecing.

Go to Ebay and Etsy and see what is going on there .. I sure would not giveit away!Ask her what she thinks is a fair price - knowing it all hand made ... blah balh ... and if she is at all savvy .. she may say something good ..BUT non-quilters do not have any idea what we pay just for fabric. A friend was by a while back and I had an assortment laid out on my ironing board for matching value and color and prints .. and there they were all in a long fan like row and she lifted a couple and said "what's this stuff cost nowadays, $1. or $2 a yard?" she was dead serious ... my mouth dropping onto the stacks gave her a clue - and she nearly fainted when I gave her prices!
So maybe your friend really doesn't know HOW MUCH these things are costing.

I love love love quilty birds, and yours are outstanding. Priceless.

This quilt is wonderful. Absolutely worth much more than $75.00 for paper piecing those birds. You'd have to take that away from me at gunpoint. It is beautiful. Keep it!

Wow!! That's beautiful. $75 is not even in the ball park. $250 is much closer.
