Do you? I've noticed on the internet lately a Scrappy Trip Around the World and the Dresden Plate Challenge. I know there are many more, but these two I've seen just about everywhere.

Would you make one of these? Frankly, I don't really care for the scrappy Trip Around the World - a little too scrappy for my taste.

And someday I would like to make a dresden plate quilt, but not now. I'm working on something else. But it's on my 'list' and will someday make one.

And Emerald is the color of the year for 2013. OK, I love green - it's my favorite color, but not because someone said it should be. I usually lean a little more 'foresty' too.

So, obviously, I do not follow trends. I did once though - in my neck of the woods at my old LQS everyone was making these Bargello Heart quilts and I just loved it, so I made one.

So how about you? Follow the trends? Follow what you find on the internet? Do you like to work with the color of the year? Do you get your ideas from other trends or fly solo?

No I don't. Not in quilts, clothing, interior design, what I drive, what I eat...

I make/wear/do/drive/eat what I like. Life is too short to allow someone else to lead me!

I'd have to say a big NO...I am who I am...and tend to be more of a leader than a follower, with that being said I'll just add...if I like something and it is me or my style...I will use it, make it, wear it,ride it, drive it regardless of what others think...the only person I have to set an example for is my son

I don't think I follow quilt design trends. I make what I want, when I want, and I'm lucky to get any of that done at all, LOL!

However, those color-of-the-year trends will impact me one way or the other at some point. We had a guild lecture once from someone in the textile industry. She said that the colors we see in the US for linens & household items lag far behind the ones in Europe. I believe her -- the French cast iron pot maker Le Creuset came out with their new color "Fennel," an emerald green, several years ago. I wondered why they had chosen that green...know I think I know. It takes awhile for the color "wave" to reach here, but those color-of-the-year choices are part of the reason why you don't see many peach-colored linens or wallpaper any more. Home color trends definitely change. Right after I re-did my house with soft blue-based greens (which were everywhere then), the greens became yellow-based (more olive). So replacing tablecloths & throw rugs & kitchen towels with the right shades of green for my decor has been a challenge! (I figure if I wait long enough, "my green" will be back...)

One "trend" bandwagon I never could jump on were the Kaffe Fassett and the Amy Butler big bold prints & colors for quilt fabrics. As I've said before, others in my sewing groups embraced them immediately & made fantastic things with them. But I can't work with them...they're too "busy" for my eyes. They make me nervous, if that's the right word. Guess I'm reacting to the motion in the patterns?

I've noticed a trend among some younger quilt bloggers to go very modern & simple with quilt designs. Also, they've been using a lot of white spaces in their designs. I do like the way that sets off the colors. I've enjoyed looking but I haven't gone completely modern with my design ideas yet.

The good thing about this hobby is that the sky's the limit when it comes to self-expression, and there's something for everyone. But as consumers, we do have to deal with whatever color trends come around for household furnishings, like them or not, because that's what will be what's in the stores. Seen many brand new avocado or harvest gold refrigerators at Sears lately?

I don't follow trends usually but sometimes they do inspire me.

Scrappy trip around the world has caught my attention. I didn't like it at all at first. But my 10 yr old DD has decided she needs a rainbow quilt and we decided on Scrappy trip. It is the perfect pattern. My sewing table is buried in the fabrics she picked, lol! I am sure there is enough fabric for a dozen quilts!

So I guess I can be "trendy' in quilting. That is funny since I am not trendy in any other way - at all!

I've got a box with the Scrappy Trip pattern and strips collected so far for the quilt...thing is, I'm really not following a trend, the trend's following me. tee hee
As Bonnie said, the Trip's been on her site for about 11 years! The plaid one Bonnie posted several years ago is the one that got me hooked on collecting shirts.
If anything, I'm anti-trend....really resistant to getting $ucked in.

Nope, I'm so far out of the loop trend wise, that I can hardly see it from here!!!

I don't I tend to go with what, ever I have the material for and dance to my own beat of the drum. Just trying to use things now that I have o hand. So some day my kids will think .......what was mom doing with this and wow where she get that ugly material lol. Just like to have fun and keep myself busy!

I am far out of the loop when it comes to trends. However, I think we all are somewhat influenced by them, because the new fabrics follow the trend in pattern or color or both.

I don't follow the trends just because they are trends, but finally do have an influence on me because by the time they are moving on out I have seen them enough that the colors or style can grow on me!

I get what I like and work with what I like. Just because some guru thinks something should be changed doesn't mean it is going to happen with me. Money talks--if you don't have it, you don't buy the new trend!

I can honestly say I have followed a trend, fashion, fad only once in my life. That was when they started embellishing sweatshirts and tees.

When I began to 'bloom', G od with His sense of humor said, 'Let's really make her bloom'. Blouses with buttons were a horror to me so I wore a lot of sweaters. Not because I was a tease, trying to be sexy or seductive. They were comfortable and let me look good instead of my clothes looking as if they didn't fit. I was in heaven when the embellished sweats and tees became the trend. And they didn't cost a fortune. And because I could make it, no one else would have it.

As crafters, we've all seen something that interested us, thought we could tweak to make it better or uniquely ours.

When I reorganized my stash I found I really needed to find some patterns to use it all up. ButI won't be making the Scrappy Trip around the World, it ain't my style.

I have always believed....Style is who you are, fashions/trends is what someone thinks you should be. And I am always me so trends seldom entice me.

I'm pretty far away from the trends "up here" in the frozen northland. Trends seem to start on each coast and move inward which makes Ole and Lean land the last place to be reached.
However, I do like to look at the new fabric lines in the quilting magazines, on line and in the stores. I always enjoy the color combinations and graphic inspirations. Then I go back to using what is in my stash.

I suppose it is a trend but I do like the look of what is being called Modern Quilts which use more solid fabrics, negative space, no borders, and asymetery. The blocks can be traditional but with a new twist.

In general, no, I don't follow trends. I prefer choosing whatever I like as far as fabric and patterns both are concerned. I sort of have my own trends. For a while most of my quilts had the 18" preprinted embroidered blocks. Then I started doing mostly pieced. Now I do a lot of applique.

However, sometimes a new pattern catches my eye and I can't wait to use it. For example, a few years ago I made a disappearing nine-patch and more recently I've made several of the jelly roll race quilts.

I love visual the pop of some of the new fabrics...some of the older fabric designs with the new colors...think retro '70s lol

But I don't want them in my house.

I tried the in-style avocado green back in the '70s. After remarrying, I rented my house and left the perfectly functioning avocado green appliances in it for the renters to enjoy. Learned my lesson big time. I have white appliances.

I've always decorated neutral because neutral is always in style. It's easier to change curtains/drapes/bedspread/linens that it is to repaint every 5 years.

I've always loved RED and did do the black and red Mediterranean style of the late 70s. I liked the red. I did not like the Mediterranean. So no reds in my house until the new house in 2004. Every quilt used as a comforter for that room is red. I have white curtains in there with an inner curtain of red.

In the last two years, I've been replacing my small kitchen appliances with Kitchenaid Empire Red. Goes perfect with my white large appliances. I'm happy!

I don`t think I follow trends. I love black, use it a lot, used it in my first quilt 15 years ago, and use it now. But I do like some of the new fabrics, but mostly the hand dyed or painted, because they are different. I don`t usually do traditional, but just did a rail fence for my son. I do what I want, wear what I want, and like weird things. That is me!

That being said: usually not..But I do like contemporary as opposed to older styles. Do NOT like star patterns unless they make a pinwheel. Oops -that might be a contradiction.

A couple years ago I got a yen for an orangey quilt. Now those two colors are everywhere in the quilt mags. Hmmm

I've never got on the batik bandwagon or the oriental. I don't like the Big splashy prints like Amy Butler. To my mind, why go to all the effort of piecing a block and then not be able to see the "design" of the piecing? I do however try new, interesting techniques, especially if it saves me time - such as the Ten minute block or Stack and Whack. I make mostly kid's donation quilts and so I like something fun and fast.

ETA - also string quilts and crumb blocks. Are these trends or are they here to stay? Hope so.

Yes and No. I find the modern quilts to be very eye catching and fun. But, they don't really suit my home decor.

I think I like too many things actually, it would be easier to say NO, NO, NO instead of YES, YES, YES!

Since I'm busy with UFOs I just keeping adding quilts I like to Pinterest or my Make Someday List. Maybe I'll have it all figured out by the time I get those under control!

No I make what strikes me at the time. Latly is has been scrappy cause of trying to get rid of all the scraps. Using them for QWL and so far they look good.

I'm either 20 years behind a trend, or 20 years ahead of a trend. I was trendy in highschool for clothes to the 80's....then discovered the "classics" aaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Home. But I enjoy playing with anything in fabric color (except coral), so really none of my quilts yet can be hung up! Actually I have no clue what I'm doing. I feel good if I've made it through a day. I did like the clothes from 89 to 97, and the 40's. Absolutely nothing from today. I like today's food choices better than anything in the past. Trends now are shooting through so fast, there's hardly any time to think about it, so I don't. Love my white appliances, though. Brown stove still hanging in there,however....apparently well built.

I would have to figure out what the trend is first. I'm generally too busy trying to figure out myself to worry about others' opinions. I love color, but not the big splashy prints. I don't care for the florals I've seen the past few years — they all look "flat" rather than dimensional. Thankfully I have boxes of florals I do like, so I won't run out any time soon.

As far as clothing, I wear what I like and what looks good on me. I drive a 10-year old car that is exactly right for me.

I think what this thread says about a lot of us is that we are pretty comfortable knowing who we are and working with that. Not that we are in a comfort zone and never step out, but that we know what pleases us and we are happy to be our own person rather than bowing to the whims of others. I like that in myself and in my friends.

I guess with age comes wisdom. Many here seem comforable with who they are and dance to their own drummer, me included.
Sherry, I didn't know I needed to repaint avery 5 years?? Shhh, keep it under you hat but it was in '00 I redid my bedroom and painted the hallway woodwork and the sewing room. I was ahead of the curve as my bedroon is emerald green to go with the quilt DD made for us in '97.
Now my appliances are an eclectic bunch...my stove is a turquoise from the '60's, double oven and love it. My '85 Mercedes bit the dust this fall but the '98 truck is still going and I live in a house that started life in 1850-ish.
I'll have to recheck Bonnie's page to see the scrappy trip around the world as I am gzathering ideas for a quilt with Dad's shirts.

i used to get a lot of inspiration from quilt magazines, but now i am all about pinterest.

Many people who follow trendy colors are painting constantly.

My house was build in 2002. We purchased it (repo) from the bank in 2004. The bulk of the walls were light tan/taupe/whatever. The master bedroom/bath were pale blue. The other two bedrooms and bath were pale yellow. Neither were ever my colors. DH said the paint was only 2 years old and we would not be repainting. We'd been married almost 6 years...evidently not long enough for him to know me very well. All interior walls are the same color now - that light tan...neutral. I won't have to paint again! LOL

Glad to hear it, Sherry. Who needs to repaint when you can play in the fabrics. Only my fabric room (with no heat) has painted walls. Probably painted about 1980's in a pretty, IMHO, peach.

Mandy, nope, not going to pintrest I'm on here way too much as it is. Both DDs love it though.

I'm not a trendy person...unless, of course, I approve of the current "trend" but then I'll keep using it well past the trendy stage. I do like the look of the "modern" quilts though. The clean lines appeal to me. I have learned to buy a bunch of any particular color line I am really drawn to when it is "trendy" cause it will disappear soon....usually just when I need it.

I'm not a trendy person, but if quilts using Geese is the new 'quilt love', then I'm in! I bought the Easy Quilts (Winter 2012) because of the beautiful quilt featured on the cover - Snow Geese.

If a trend floats my boat, then I follow it. Mug rugs and EPP are very popular now and I'm glad they are or I never would have discovered them. Color of the year was never my thing so I ignore that. I just look at what is out there and go with whatever grabs me. I should not even look though as I have enough potential projects to last me quite some time.

I'm not into trends, but like others, I do get inspiration from trends. I like to make/have what I like and what makes me happy.

No, i don't follow trends. I get ideas from other peoples quilts, blocks or colors. if it appeals to me, i may do it. Emerald Green is my birthday stone, and have always loved it.
I think everything old, makes it way around again..and is new to me!
scrappy is my favorite quilt, i love old fashioned. But i am not drawn to the scrappy trip around the world..at all.
