I definately want to strike while the iron is hot on this quilt, so I'm trying to plan everything out today! For those of you who have made scalloped edge quilts, do you generally scallope all 4 sides or just 3? I was planning on just three initially, leaving the pillow end as a straight edge, but then I started thinking that if all 4 sides were the same the quilt could be rotated so it would get equal wear on the top and bottom. I got a quilt as a child that my grandmother made me. It had enbroidered animals in the blocks, so it was directional. Since my mom always put it on my bed "right side up" so the animal scenes wouldn't look upside down, the quilt got lots of wear on the top edge where it was handled and pulled. That top edge today had practically disintegrated. What does everyone else do?

As May said, it's your choice. Do you want to be able to rotate the quilt? Your story about your Grandmother's quilt could help you answer yourself. How long do you want the quilt to last? I just finished designing a pattern for a quilt, queen size, where the top edge will not match the other three sides. That's because the top edge will fold over the pillows. Made a king size quilt for my kids and didn't match the top edge because I was, plain and simply, 'done' with that quilt. lollllll You're the designer; you get to make alllllll the choices.

Another possible consideration is the size of the scallops. If they are rather deep, it might be best to have the top edge straight to go over the pillows or you might need a little extra length to be sure the pillows get completely covered. However, if they are not very deep, it should be fine either way.
