My son made me a quilt ladder. What kind of stain or paint can i use that does not rub off on quilt? Has anyone ever made one? Thanks Janet

I would use an oil based paint, or if you use stain, be sure to cover it with polyurethane varnish, 2 coats. Make sure you let it dry thoroughly, 2 or 3 days at least. Both the paint and varnish take time to "cure".

I have a friend and her DH made her one. His recommendation was to put a piece of batting between the quilt and the wood. It's too precious an item to not protect it. Don't let the quilt touch any part of the wood.

I bet you could make some little "slip covers" for the rods with muslin/batting and slipstitch them on.

I agree with the little slip cover idea. My husband thought he would be nice and displayed some of my quilts on a rack made by a friend. The polyurethane wasn't put on evenly and the humidity cause problems with the underlying stain. Needless to say had to redo a couple of quilts.

Another option would be to purchase the inexpensive plastic shower rod covers, cut them to length for the rods and put them over the wood, they would also help the higher quilts be taken off when you want to.
