That is a good pattern. I'll have to keep that one in mind also.
I do question the use of polyester batting for placemats, though. It's my understanding that polyester will transfer heat so if you put a hot plate on the mat, the heat will go through to the table top.
I just trace around my hexagon templates on the wrong side of folded fabric, or 2 coordinating fabrics placed right sides together (you need 2 the same size + 1 of batting) and 1 smaller hexagon 1/2" smaller, I like to fussy cut this one.
I fold my fabric width wise from selvage to selvage and cut into 5" strips, then trace as many hexagons as I can,( I just eyeball to space for seam allowances, then take a piece of batting (those narrow strips cut from the sides of a quilt top work well as long as it's 5" wide like the strips and goes the length of fabric)the batting goes on the bottom, and then just simply pop in a few pins to keep the layers from shifting, and sew on the lines you traced.
Once you have sewn all of your hexagons, simply cut them out leaving 1/4" seam allowance (I like to carefully with tiny scissors, trim the batting as close as possible being careful not to snip into the fabric. Then very carefully eyeball the center of the top layer of fabric, and pinch it between your fingers, being careful to only get the top layer of fabric...then take your seam ripper and slit small straight line about an inch or so, then turn the hexagon right side out and press, making sure to press the slit flat where you turned it.
I add iron on steam a seam, or a few drops of roxannes glue/baste it and press my fussy cut hex in the center of my previous hex, eyeballing roughly 1/2" all around. Then simply blanket stitch around the outside edges of the smaller hex...and your done.
I can easily make a dozen or more in an hour if I'm organized :\
I'll add a pic below as a visual of the front and back, these have 3 differnt coordinating fabrics. I have been meaning to do a tutorial or maybe host a PJ party with these, they are so small and quick, the blanket stitch is really all the quilting they need, although I have monogrammed initials in the centerThis message has been edited. The coasters are adorable Kentucky! What a great idea to go with the placemats. I'm going to start early next year for Christmas. It would be fun to make sets of these. Thank ou so much!!!!!
