I have always pre-washed my fabrics before starting my quilts. I have recently bought a lot of pre-cuts (thanks to Mo star quilt and the daily deal!). I don't believe pre-washing these would be a good idea due to ravelling so would you say I should not pre-wash the other fabrics I'll be using in a quilt? Including the backing?

I counted 13 charm packs, one jelly roll, one turnover and 4 layer cakes in my sewing room! Now I'm searching for patterns to use these.

i would say no to washing precuts. i think it would produce a tangled mess. have u checked out the "bakery" tab on www.modabakeshop.com for precut "recipes" ?

You could just run hot water in the sink and drop the precuts in a few pieces at a time. Lay on a doubled up towel and squish the water out...lay out to dry...then run an iron over them...???

Personally, I wouldn't worry about washing anything. Just check the reds if any for colorfastness

Even though I wash all yardages, I would never bother washing those precuts.

Nope, don't wash the precuts, they might end up a little wonky. Just toss in a color catcher the first time you wash the project. And have fun choosing projects!!

I am speaking from experience. Do Not wash your precuts. I was a very new quilter and bought a kit of tumbling blocks. The directions said to pre wash and use vinegar to set the color. I sorted by color and shade washed them in a bowl in the kitchen, Lots of color came out, but when i dried them all on a towel (like instructed) they were ravely and wonky then I trimmed them up and believe me nothing good came out of that kit. None of our customers prewash anything - not yardage or precuts. I still prewash, but no one else seems to & their projects all come out fine.

Thanks all. I am just old school and have always prewashed. I check moda often for patterns and ideas. I think I'll head to one of our LQS for some patterns. I love the ease of online shopping but do like to support the local shops as I would hate to see them close.

I need some solids and tone on tones to go with my pre-cuts!

Funny this subject came up. I have a large lingerie bag of washed pre-cuts sitting by my side on the floor. I'm trying to decide if I really want to iron them, or just make more stuffing for a pillow.

I will never wash pre-cuts again.

I was all my precut charms (etc) easily by getting a large bowl of hot/warm water and setting them in there as a big chunk
I then put them in a towel to soak off most of the water and press quickly with an iron and they dry instantly without any distorting.

I personally wouldn't worry about mixing my non-prewashed precuts with my washed stash fabric. If I was using new yardage with them, I wouldn't wash it, but if I was using stash that was already washed I would just go ahead and combine them. I don't think you'll find a lot of shrinkage in pre-cuts because they are usually good brands.

I'm with CBQ ... don't wash them. I did that ONCE ... man, what a mess!

All the ladies in my quilt guild buy, sew and then use the color catchers ... I even did my DDs batik quilt that way this year... no washing, and it turned out BEAUTIFUL! If you think it will be a heavy color bleeder, more than 1 color catchers works good too!
