I've made many quilts for wounded soldiers, some by myself start to finish, and some with my quilt group. My DH spent 30 years active duty, so it's something very important to us.
I send the quilts off, and I never really knew where they went, just hoping someone is enjoying them and being cheered up knowing that people care. Imagine my surprise....no, SHOCK when someone posted this picture on my Tin Lizzie quilting list. I'm 99% sure it's our quilt!

The caption tells the story:
"This was one of the most poignant moments of the Pres' first term. He was visiting wounded w r riors in the intensive care unit ICU at ---------, May 1, 2012. He had just presented a Purple Heart to S g t. Chase Haag, who had been injured by an I E D just hours before. S g t. Haag was covered with a blanket and it was difficult to see how badly he was injured. He was also seemingly unconscious so the Pres whispered in his ear so not to wake him. Just then, there was a rustling under the blanket and S g t. Haag, eyes still closed, reached his hand out to shake hands with the Pres."
WOW, Thanks for the post. I too keep making quilts for charity and send them off, hoping that they are being used. The story makes it all worth the effort. Thanks again! Deb

How awesome is that!! I'm working on a couple now to start my donations to QOV...it seems like such a worthy project, a small way to thank our service people. Thank you for what you have done!!
Wonderful that this man has made a full recovery. It's really neat to see that your quilt was allowed such an honor to bring comfort to him. I'm sure if all our QOV quilts could tell stories, we'd need lots of kleenex.
That is wonderful! There is a thread floating around to sign up for making a QOV quilt to bring or send to retreat and they will be donated to QOV from there. I am glad to see them being used

How exciting to see your quilt with a soldier. Have sent many quilts to Quilts of Valor and would love to know where they are now. Know a soldier in Texas that received 4 quilts when he was wounded. That picture reminds me to get busy and send more quilts to a worthy cause.
Thank you so very much for sharing...it's a beautiful quilt. It is nice to "see" a contribution actually being used. I've sent off quilts into the black hole and always wonder myself.

Thank you for all your nice replies. I really mean it when I say this picture is for all of us. Like many of you, I've also heard the stories of people getting three or four quilts. And I feel like we are sending them into "the black hole". I wish I could get the real story about this, and believe me, I've tried!
My DH is career military, so my "family Dr." is the military hospital. Every time I have a Dr. appt I interrogate the Dr, nurses, staff (anyone I have contact with) about the quilts. Most of these people have been deployed more than once, and none have remembered seeing the quilts! Why is that? I just don't understand.
One time I did receive a tiny Christmas card signed "your friends in I r a q".
Yes Chlynn the sold @rs really do get the quilts. I know first hand of many we have sent from QWL have gotten to sold @rs and then our letters we get back tell of many others receiving them. It is a joy to send and an added joy to hear back. Hugs, Maggie
