Welcome! Welcome! Welcome!

It is time to announce the 2013 HGTV BOM and I am so excited to be doing this again this year! Smile I have to say, I love doing this because it keeps me motivated to get at least one quilt top made every year! (CBQ LOL)

First, I want to thank ivy_cottage for being my partner for 2012. I had such fun brainstorming with her and designing the blocks for 2012. Thanks ivy!! (hugs)

My 'chick-in-crime' this year is the one and only~Chicky! That’s right, SavedSinnr is back. Smile

2013 is going to be the year for ‘secrets’! Smile Everyone likes to keep secrets, right? So we thought, why not have everyone in on the fun of keeping a secret! It’s your chance to tease us a bit. Wink

This is going to be run just like past BOM’s; there is no sign up, no big commitment (though we do hope you will play along every month!). All you need to do to be in on the drawing for a super prize each month is to make the block we present, and show us a photo. Wink

We will be choosing the blocks from Quilters Cache again this year.
"Online" Quilting Groups may provide TEXT links to my patterns to have their members come here to the Cache and get specific patterns. Should photographs of items made from Original designs be posted on your group website, they should also be clearly marked with the name of the pattern As I have it named, and that it is from The Quilter's Cache/Marcia Hohn.

The catch? The secret? I can hear you thinking!! Big Grin

*We are going to show you the proposed lay-out right up front. Eek

Do you like that idea?
Its kind of scary for me because what if you don't want to play? Eek I sure hope that isn't the case!

Your job is to choose a chain block or a secondary block and make one every month
to go along with the block we present. And sometime during the year, you will need to make one extra block. (Of course, you are under no obligation to make a chain, or use our lay-out. This is just the extra fun part.)

You can choose any block you like BUT keep it a secret!! Don’t tell anyone! Shhh

At the end of the year, we will have the great unveiling! You will be sewing your blocks, and top together as we go along, so by December all you will need to do is make the last block and finish your top. Then snap a photo and wait until you see the great reveal post. Smile Add your photo so we can all enjoy your quilt top too. Smile Of course, we will have some fun prizes and treats along the way. Wink

Sound fun?

Below are some examples of lay-out options. And a list of chain links to get you started thinking. As you can see, you will make 13 chain blocks, and the 12 monthly blocks will go in the blank spaces. And yes, you can tease us all you want about your chain~~ but keep it secret! Shhh

Just a note about fabric…

Since I don’t know what your chain is going to be, I can’t really tell you how much fabric to get. I am planning on using scraps for my background. If you want to have all one fabric for the background to your chain and blocks, I would suggest getting 3 yards. If you want to use the same two colors, or three colors in all your chain blocks (not including the background fabric), and use them in some of your monthly blocks too… then get 2 yards of each color. You will most likely have some (maybe even lots) left for your stash, but I think it is better to have too much than too little. If you want the border fabric to be the same as your chain, and the binding from the same fabric too; then I would add an extra 2.5 yards for those things.

Have fun choosing your chain blocks!! See you on January first!! Smile

Chain ideas from Quilter's Cache~

Squares and Oblongs

Pennsylvania Block

Calico Puzzle

Nine patch

Of course, these are just a few examples. You can use anything you can think~ pinwheels, an hourglass block, log cabins or courthouse steps, an Irish chain, embroidery, applique... anything! Smile

I wasn't going to do this for 2013 but now I'm thinking... Smile I could conceivably do the chain blocks between xmas and new years and then only need to do the BOM portion throughout the year. I did get 9 months of this year's done - well almost, I have to do the small blocks on one of them yet. That gives me a grade of 75% - a failing grade but close to squeaking through Smile I still have tons of fabrics in the bin I have been working out of (originally intended for Dear Jane....then Sylvia...finally started to actually use for this year's BOM since the others weren't happening Smile I did enjoy working on this year's blocks, even if I didn't finish - they gave me a good reason to indulge in some much needed "me time" during a very stressful year.

Sue called me during Packer half time last night and told me the posting was up. I'll have to think about this a little. Sue and I did a King size Dbl. Irish Chain for my son for Christmas and it turned out really well, but I'm not too anxious to make another bunch of Irish Chain, I imagine Sue will talk me into it again this year, especially since I finally managed to get 1 block a perfect size. LOL I'll be thinking. Pat

Ok ready set lets go. I have chosen my secret block and the fabric for all 13 of them. I now have to be patient and wait for the BOM but at least I can work on the secret.
This sounds like it will be a lot of fun and I am trying to talk my best friend into joining us so we can work together although she is in NY and I'm in NC.We can make it work.

This will be fun, I have my fabric and my "chain" block selected. Now can I get organized enough to make my chain blocks ahead of time so I only have to make the BOM each month???

Guess I should finish 2012 BOMs first!!!

My box of fabric came today and for the most part, I'm happy. It's a good start. Somehow, I ended up with a purple, not sure how I ordered that, but I did!

PatriciaAnne - I'm pretty sure the blocks won't be applique. Let's not give them any ideas! LOL! I'd be looking for a different project too!

I'm very interested in this block but, I'm a little behind on other things. I still may join you all after the holidays. I love that fabric also. That purple and the flowers on it are stunning. The others are quite nice also. I've already looked into patterns that I may use.

OK. If it does not involve applique I might give it a try. Is there a commitment or is this just up to us to do it?
I looked at some chain blocks on the web site you gave for the blocks and don't you know the one I like is a 16" block. Trying to figure out if I can downsize it somehow.

Do I understand this?

All blocks will be 12"

The BOM blocks will be chickens of some sort. Perhaps like sunbonnet sue??? They will be appliqued for the most part???

Do I have the general idea of the BOM quilt?? Perhaps you could post the first block so we can decide if we want to do this and order fabric while it is on sale?????? please??????

LOL NO chickens! Big Grin Not sure who is talking chickens. Actually no applique~ so those who are 'allergic' to it can relax. Smile And that is all I'm saying. LOL

All blocks are 12 inches finished. You need to choose your own 'chain' block~ that should be 12 inches too. Maybe you could just skip a row on your block PatriciaAnne?

The first block will be posted on the first of January. As for hints to how much fabric you might need, check the first post.

I'm getting excited!!! Big Grin

I just want to say to anyone who is thinking this will be hard or not fun to reconsider. You learn new techniques and brush up on the basic quilting skills. If you make a mistake/choose the wrong color combo so the pattern doesn't show up well then you have learned something else and so will the others. It is fun, just look at the chatter on any posting from any month. Please join us. Our leaders always help if we ask, so you aren't on your own. Looking forward to 2013 BOM.
