Welcome! Welcome! Welcome! It is time to announce the 2013 HGTV BOM and I am so excited to be doing this again this year! First, I want to thank ivy_cottage for being my partner for 2012. I had such fun brainstorming with her and designing the blocks for 2012. Thanks ivy!! (hugs) My 'chick-in-crime' this year is the one and only~Chicky! That’s right, SavedSinnr is back. 2013 is going to be the year for ‘secrets’! This is going to be run just like past BOM’s; there is no sign up, no big commitment (though we do hope you will play along every month!). All you need to do to be in on the drawing for a super prize each month is to make the block we present, and show us a photo. We will be choosing the blocks from Quilters Cache again this year. "Online" Quilting Groups may provide TEXT links to my patterns to have their members come here to the Cache and get specific patterns. Should photographs of items made from Original designs be posted on your group website, they should also be clearly marked with the name of the pattern As I have it named, and that it is from The Quilter's Cache/Marcia Hohn. The catch? The secret? I can hear you thinking!! *We are going to show you the proposed lay-out right up front. Do you like that idea? Its kind of scary for me because what if you don't want to play? Your job is to choose a chain block or a secondary block and make one every month to go along with the block we present. And sometime during the year, you will need to make one extra block. (Of course, you are under no obligation to make a chain, or use our lay-out. This is just the extra fun part.) You can choose any block you like BUT keep it a secret!! Don’t tell anyone! At the end of the year, we will have the great unveiling! You will be sewing your blocks, and top together as we go along, so by December all you will need to do is make the last block and finish your top. Then snap a photo and wait until you see the great reveal post. Sound fun? Below are some examples of lay-out options. And a list of chain links to get you started thinking. As you can see, you will make 13 chain blocks, and the 12 monthly blocks will go in the blank spaces. And yes, you can tease us all you want about your chain~~ but keep it secret! Just a note about fabric… Since I don’t know what your chain is going to be, I can’t really tell you how much fabric to get. I am planning on using scraps for my background. If you want to have all one fabric for the background to your chain and blocks, I would suggest getting 3 yards. If you want to use the same two colors, or three colors in all your chain blocks (not including the background fabric), and use them in some of your monthly blocks too… then get 2 yards of each color. You will most likely have some (maybe even lots) left for your stash, but I think it is better to have too much than too little. If you want the border fabric to be the same as your chain, and the binding from the same fabric too; then I would add an extra 2.5 yards for those things. Have fun choosing your chain blocks!! See you on January first!! Chain ideas from Quilter's Cache~ Squares and Oblongs Pennsylvania Block Calico Puzzle Nine patch Of course, these are just a few examples. You can use anything you can think~ pinwheels, an hourglass block, log cabins or courthouse steps, an Irish chain, embroidery, applique... anything! HGTV BOM! I'm SEW 'EGG'-cited!!

One more and then it is time for you to start hunting for your chain. HGTV BOM! I'm SEW 'EGG'-cited!!

Are they 12" blocks? And, the Red, White and Blue option made me think of me...maybe I'll use that, maybe I won't! LOL
Yes, they are all 12 inch finished blocks.
Well, I went into my idea file and I think I might have found something already!!! Not sure if you saw my comment before, but I ordered 21 yards of fabric yesterday! Some will be for this project!
I wasn't going to do this for 2013 but now I'm thinking...
I thought that I would make a Chris tmas quilt in 2013 I may have to rethink this. Oh well I have lots of time to think. Handie Ann
Sue called me during Packer half time last night and told me the posting was up. I'll have to think about this a little. Sue and I did a King size Dbl. Irish Chain for my son for Christmas and it turned out really well, but I'm not too anxious to make another bunch of Irish Chain, I imagine Sue will talk me into it again this year, especially since I finally managed to get 1 block a perfect size. LOL I'll be thinking. Pat
Ok ready set lets go. I have chosen my secret block and the fabric for all 13 of them. I now have to be patient and wait for the BOM but at least I can work on the secret. This sounds like it will be a lot of fun and I am trying to talk my best friend into joining us so we can work together although she is in NY and I'm in NC.We can make it work.

Sounds like a lot of fun!!! I love doing this BOM because I make blocks that I would most likely never have tried on my own.
I think this will be fun and something new to do a combination with 2 types of blocks. Still thinking what type of chain to do. LOL Sue
This will be fun, I have my fabric and my "chain" block selected. Now can I get organized enough to make my chain blocks ahead of time so I only have to make the BOM each month??? Guess I should finish 2012 BOMs first!!! |
I've never done one of these before. I keep changing my mind about my 'chain' blocks! My fabric shipment should come today and I can't wait to get into that!
I'm thinking about this. Of course if the 12 blocks are applique I might not. NOT good at applique.
I have nothing selected but this sounds like lots of fun! So if I can I'm in too Thanks chickies for such a great idea!
Not committing until I get November and December done from 2012! But I sure want to...
My box of fabric came today and for the most part, I'm happy. It's a good start. Somehow, I ended up with a purple, not sure how I ordered that, but I did! PatriciaAnne - I'm pretty sure the blocks won't be applique. Let's not give them any ideas! LOL! I'd be looking for a different project too!
You can send the purple to me WQfC if you don't want it
| ||||
| ||||
love those fabrics jill...just gorgeous...I've got my thinking cap on...I have so many UFO's to finish, not to mention all my tops that need to be sandwiched and quilted...I love handquilting but me and machine quilting...well I dislike it very much on anything larger than a crib quilt. " Life is short, Break the rules, Forgive quickly, Kiss slowly, Love truly, Laugh uncontrollably, And never regret anything that made you smile.. "
oooh Jill, love the fabrics! Is that purple a CW print? Judie Rothermel? I love CW! Trish it is going to be fun!!
Since I don't remember ordering that, I'm not sure what it is! lOL! I will check the selvage tomorrow though!
From what I can read on the selvage it's Judie Roth.....something Gorgeous fabrics! I can see a beautiful quilt in the near future LOL LOL
I'm very interested in this block but, I'm a little behind on other things. I still may join you all after the holidays. I love that fabric also. That purple and the flowers on it are stunning. The others are quite nice also. I've already looked into patterns that I may use. J Lu
Jill it looks like you have ordered several CW fabrics. I have a whole tote full of them. They are my all time favorites.Your quilt will be beautiful with them and feel very warm and welcoming.
Thank You! I will admit that I don't know much about CW's. I'm hoping to end up with my quilt having an antique feel to it.
with that fabric and the colors I'm sure your quilt will have an antique feel.
After thinking about this for a while, I think I'm going to give it a try. I've never done anything like this, but there's always a first time. I've got an idea about the colors I want to use- now all I have to do is decide on my chain block. I'm off to find the perfect one! Happy Stitching All! Susan
Now after hours & hours of searching, I've got my chain block narrowed down to 6 choices. I've got a feeling that I'm going to have to make some sample blocks to see which one I'm finally going to use. Decisions... Decisions! *sigh*
I keep experimenting and saving samples in eq6. I think I need to see a few blocks from the BOM before I make up my mind on which will be the best...I'm not so good at waiting!!!
Susan~ do not feel bad! I have gone through and discarded a number of ideas too. The blocks will look great with any chain~ that is why I'm having my problem. LOL Jill... just a few more weeks!
I've got my batiks ready for this ! Well ... 'cept for the few I threw in the shopping basket at Missouri Star Quilt Co PLEASE HELP SUPPORT MY WALK ... on my RELAY FOR LIFE PAGE Bring on the New Year ... it's MY YEAR for sewing!

Back from a visit in CA, so catching up on the boards. Um sounds interesting. Will have to start doing some research... but first guess I'd better get caught up on the 2012 BOM - WAY BEHIND!!!!!! OK. If it does not involve applique I might give it a try. Is there a commitment or is this just up to us to do it? I looked at some chain blocks on the web site you gave for the blocks and don't you know the one I like is a 16" block. Trying to figure out if I can downsize it somehow.
Do I understand this? All blocks will be 12" The BOM blocks will be chickens of some sort. Perhaps like sunbonnet sue??? They will be appliqued for the most part??? Do I have the general idea of the BOM quilt?? Perhaps you could post the first block so we can decide if we want to do this and order fabric while it is on sale?????? please?????? If life hands you scraps make quilts
LOL NO chickens! All blocks are 12 inches finished. You need to choose your own 'chain' block~ that should be 12 inches too. Maybe you could just skip a row on your block PatriciaAnne? The first block will be posted on the first of January. As for hints to how much fabric you might need, check the first post. I'm getting excited!!!
I just want to say to anyone who is thinking this will be hard or not fun to reconsider. You learn new techniques and brush up on the basic quilting skills. If you make a mistake/choose the wrong color combo so the pattern doesn't show up well then you have learned something else and so will the others. It is fun, just look at the chatter on any posting from any month. Please join us. Our leaders always help if we ask, so you aren't on your own. Looking forward to 2013 BOM. JOIN US the more the merrier. You keep what you make and use it how you want to.
I'm going to try this. Also going to try using all stash... I have plenty! I've never done this before. Now I have to find a chain block! WQFC, I love your fabrics! I'm a CW lover and your choices are beautiful.
WHAT DO YOU MEAN.... NO CHICKENS? Did you see who's back in the mix on the BOM chicks? PLEASE HELP SUPPORT MY WALK ... on my RELAY FOR LIFE PAGE Bring on the New Year ... it's MY YEAR for sewing! ![]()
Ok Patty talked me into it. Did you say how much fabric ill need all together for this project? J Lu
Dah! I just read the directions again. Sorry! Ok I'm on it. J Lu
Is there anybody else who has decided on a specific color palette for this? It will be fun to see where people go with this. I'm still excited!
Trish it is going to be fun!! LOL...so I suppose I may as well jump in, afterall I'll have a quilt by the end of the year then " Life is short, Break the rules, Forgive quickly, Kiss slowly, Love truly, Laugh uncontrollably, And never regret anything that made you smile.. "
I'm thinking scrapy myself, that way I can use stash. Still contemplating on my chain block.
