It's taken me a few weeks to get comfortable using my new Husquvarna Viking Tribute 140. I must say that I love it and it does everything I need it to do. I wanted the up/down feature - I got it. However, when in a hurry I MUST remember to wait for the needle to come down BEFORE going in to remove a pin. Ouch!

I realized too late, jerked my finger out of the way only to end up with a bent broken needle protruding at 90 deg angle from two points of my middle finger on my right hand. I felt so silly walking into the ER but I could'nt bring myself to pull it out and neither could my BFF. Turns out it had snapped in two inside my finger and the jury is still out if it fractured the bone

Expensive lesson learned. ER visit, xrays, tetanus shot and a course of antibiotics...

Lesson of the day..never take your eye off the needle! "Up/down" means up and DOWN.

OHHHHHH, no!!!!!! Got my fingers crossed for you on not having a broken bone. hugs and good thoughts.

For what it is worth, my Mom worked in a commercial dress factory and a frequent injury there was needles in fingers. They do heal well, for what it's worth.

Thanks for all your good wishes. I hope it heals quickly too. I am going home to the UK for a visit my DS next week and I don't relish dragging luggage around with a bum hand.

I was sooo close to finishing a stack of scrap blocks for a "Sandy" quilt and wanted to finish in time to watch the Amazing Race. Didn't get to do either, lol!

Ouch and Yuck...thats gotta' hurt....I am surprised we don't hear about more injuries via that up & down button. I'm sure it would happen to me if I had it...Mine stay down....

May, it was definitely "operator error". I like using that feature but I need to remember I have it turned on!

Hope everything heals okay. I love that option and use it all the time. Never thought about the possibility of that happening. Will be more careful for sure... Chris

I feel so sorry for you. I hope all is healed by now and this never happens again.

I have a fairly new machine also with the same feature I will remember this and be aware, hopefully I remember.

So sorry to hear this. I love the up/down feature on my machines but I guess I move slow enough that I've never gotten a finger caught.

Hope you heal quickly so you can enjoy your trip to see DS. What a scary experience. I couldn't have pulled out the needle either.

So sorry about your mishap! I hope you are still able to enjoy your vacation. Maybe by the time you get back it will be healed and you can get back behind that sewing machine!

Thanks for all your well wishes. I changed the dressing to a smaller less cumbersome one - just a large bandaid now and was able to get some sewing done this morning. But not before I took part of the ID bracelet from the ER and taped it to the front of my machine. I still can't quite figure out HOW I did it but I have a whole new respect for the power of the needle!

I'm so sorry to hear that you had to learn such a painful lesson. I hope there are no broken bones and the healing happens quickly.

Thanks, Paus. It's healing well. I'm lucky it missed the nail. My trip home is bittersweet as my older sis has lung cancer and her outlook is not good. The coming back will be tough. My 2 sisters and I are determined to have a few laughs though. Laughter is the best medicine, right? It will be the first ime in over 40 years that I will be spending my birthday with them so that will be very special.

I worked in an awning factory in Chicago. My job was to put the piping on the scallops. Yep-you guessed it-ran my finger right in with scallop and piping. It happens so fast! Needle broke off and wrapped around the bone of my middle finger (of course). Visit to ER-they had to take it out, got stitches,tetnus shot-whole nine yards. Finger was splinted and wrapped in the "international sign" if you know what I mean. My friends though it was a hoot-my Mom-not so much!! Now I keep my hands and fingers away from the needle-it only takes once!! My fingerprint on that finger shows a big line (scar).

At work they laugh caz you use your fingerprints to get into the med cart. Mine never work-I told them "yeah, ya know when I robbed that bank for the mob-they removed all my prints" They just die laughing. I'm the only one that has to type in a password!!

Ouch, ouch ouch!!! I too got sick to my stomach reading this. Here's to a speedy recovery and hope it heals quickly and well. ( My finger got in a fight with a 15 pound frozen turkey last friday. Of course my finger lost. not broken but sure black and blue. Made it hard to play for ch ur ch on sunday)

Ow! Nicunurse, that needle must have been heavy duty! No scar for me just a healthy respect for needles. Knotme - hope your finger feels better soon. Thanks all for your kind wishes.

Ouch is right. I got a tetnus shot last year, (mulch in foot...), and that shot hurt me for days. Please becareful, and get well guickly..

NICUnurse: I worked in a backpack factory in college and the instructor told us not to worry if we ran over our fingers with the needles of the industrial machines because they were moving so fast they were sterile. "Needless" to say I kept my hands 8" apart all the time while sewing...you couldn't even see the needles..

In chemistry lab I picked up a hot crucible that fell on the floor (not thinking)...heard sizzling and realized I had just burned off 4 fingers of fingerprints. Actually didn't hurt..burned off the pain sensors too. Was fascinating to see my fingerprints come back...from the outside in...took 6 months.
