PJ party, Friday 10-26-12 Pineapple block Sign In/Join

Hi Everyone!!! I’m “Sew Happy” aka Patty. I’m very excited to show you this technique for making pineapple blocks. This is not my original idea, a lady in my quilt group showed it to me, who learned it from someone in Texas. I did find the instructions for free on the internet also.

This is my first time doing this so please bear with me, feel free to ask as many questions as needed so you understand. It really is very easy!!

I’ll share the recipe for the chocolate dessert I’m making for Friday night also. It is SOOOOOOOOO good and easy!! Hint: Chocolate and Kahlua

The instructions are for one block. You can make it using just two colors, one main color and scrappy or all scrappy, however you want your pineapples to look. In my sample I have one with two colors and the other with black as my main color and scraps.

I purchased 3 1/2 yards of black for my main fabric. I’m hoping that will be enough to make my quilt come out about twin size. I have not made an entire quilt yet, only blocks.

I'm posting this on Sunday because I'll be at work on Monday Yuck and all my information is on my home computer.

Here are the sample blocks:

Here are the sizes of fabrics you will need to cut in preparation. Notice how they alternate between the main color (black) and the other colors. You can fussy cut the center piece if you wish.

Make a VERY SMALL snip one the line of each block. If you forget, this can be done later, but it is much easier to do ahead of time.

You’ll also need your iron and ironing board handy, and fabric scissors.

That’s all for now. I’ll see you all on Friday. I will start the party at 7:00 Central Time. I’ll provide the chocolate dessert, bring a spoon!!!

Hi all,

Looking forward to the class and the chocolate desert. I'll bring the wine - I like white. I won't (maybe) start drinking till I am well on my way with the block.

Patty,

In looking at your picture of cutting the small snip. That snip is in the center of the block, is that correct?

I'll be at this class & make this block. I've never made a pineapple block but I love to eat pineapple & love blocks so this class is right up my ally.

That little snip is is just one small one in one direction...right? Not like an "x" or anything?

I'm sew happy to see interest in this party already. To make the snip, fold the fabric on one line, snip on the other line. Just has to be big enough to get the point of your scissor in.

Gold star already??????? I'll have to think on that one!!

Do we need more than one square to make this block? It sort of seems like we might need FOUR (4) per block but my old eyes haven't found any numbers required.

One square of fabric for every 4 squares of chocolate Hershey bar, right? Wink

Never done the PJ parties before, but this time. I'm going to try to arrange my schedule to accommodate it!!!

I didn't notice (although you probably said!) what size the finished blocks are.

Patti, what will the finished size of the block be, or should I say unfinished, lol?

Does anyone remember the Pineapple quilt that Lynne (sewlove2quilt) did for the Scraps to Treasures challenge? I don't recall which year she did it, but it was gorgeous! I do remember she won first place.

Devonne, Lynne made that quilt for the very first challenge. I don't remember whose pattern she used, but it is a beauty.

Did I miss the starting time?

I'm bringing a pie made from Arkansas black apples! Big Grin

I'll have to pass on the kahlua thing - I don't like the coffee. I know. Y'all can't believe it. I just see it as a horrible way to ruin good chocolate.

At the next pj party - Kindle cover - feel free to bring your own coffee though! I'll even plug in the coffee pot. Doesn't it smell so good "perking"??!!

No coffee in my dessert, I don't like coffee either and I don't think Kahula tastes like coffee.

I love the pineappel block. It's a great alternate block for any traditional quilt, but I found the 1st one I did very tedious.

Arkansas blacks are real dark red, almost black. Short and squatty. The small apples in the photo are Arkansas blacks. They make delicious crispy apple pies!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arkansas_Black

Kahlua is a coffee-flavored rum-based liqueur. LOL I'm snurling my nose just typing this.
