? about selvages
I see some make very cute objects with the selvages cut from their material.
When do you cut the selvage from your material?

Just before you use it, when you get it home or when. Also, do you "cut" a little into your actual material to allow a some sewing area on the strip?

I always forget and manage to never have strips usable (long enough) for anything. I would love to have a bunch to sew little chicken pincushions like on the stashbusting thread!

I've always wondered this also. Will be watching for answers to your question.

I have no idea, and wouldn't swear to it but I would imagine anyone wanting to make something with the selvage edges could go through their stash when the occasion arose and strip them off. Saves storage. Otherwise, you can take them off whenever you feel like it. It'd be a great task to do whenever there's a show on TV you don't really want to watch but the family does, or you feel like annoying your family. ;o

Per the linked pin cushion instructions you don't need to cut into the fabric to have your selvage edge. Who'd a thunk? I guess I'd have some fabric if I was using them.

I don't cut mine off until I'm cutting the fabric...then cut off about 3/8-1/2" into the fabric so that there's enough to sew to and still see a bit of the orginal fabric.

Just b4 the COF retreat I made these 20oz water bottle covers...was asked [at the retreat] to teach a pj party [which I can't do til after the 1st of the yr]. SO start saving your selvages NOW!! Big Grin

I save all my selvages [& my friends save them for me, also] cause there are several 'selvage' projects that I want to do! I keep them in a small clear zippered pouch that a set of sheets came in.

AHA -- I knew there was some reason I bought cord locks! Ever buy the supplies before you know of the project, just because you're at the store, standing in front of something that you don't already have? Big Grin

I was under the impression that my friends who made selvage projects saved the selvages from when they were cutting up the fabric for some other project. In other words, they didn't buy fabric just to cut off the selvages first. There have been "shout outs" in my sewing groups for selvages from those who don't want theirs, so enough strips could be gathered for a project.

I keep the selvages on my fabrics until the bitter end, often folding trailing selvage ends back into smaller fabric pieces. The selvage is where I write the name of the store & when I bought the fabric. If all the maker/fabric line info isn't on my particular cut, I add that, too. So all of my selvages have fabric pen scribbles on them somewhere. Red Face But I use that info a lot, to identify or put a date to my fabrics.

I cut off my selvages when I'm making a project & save them in a zip bag. I don't use them but I've been known to have a selvage bag "give away" here on the board & I've got a list of some of the ladies here who do save them. I think I'll save my bag that I've got going right now so I can participate in that water bottle cover PJ Party after the 1st of the year.
