I have googled & I now have a couple of patterns & have read some instructions so I think I am ready to make some of these for gifting. I know many of you have made these & I have some questions. ok, I have a lot of questions.

Did you use 2 layers of fabric or 3?
Did you use any batting in the center?
Did you use flannel or cotton?
How did you finish the edges? Raggedy edges? Binding on the edges?
Did you turn inside out through an opening & sew the opening afterwards?
Are these top stitched?
Did you quilt yours?

Thanks for any assistance you can give me. I value your experience & advice Re getting some of these made up.

I have made quite a few of these & I make them out of pre-folded cloth diapers. I used this tutorial when I made mine:

They are very easy & sew up really fast.

Thanks Nlk, I will check out your link right away. While I was waiting I searched through some old posts. I found some Bunnybcb posted August 2011 on a Sew & Tell thread. She said she just used 2 layers with no batting. Do you use batting in yours? These prefolded diapers are flannel? I have some flannel & cottons in my stash & wanted to use what I had on hand. Going to check that link now. Tks for sharing.

Lens, I have always used one layer of cotton fabric and a layer of terry cloth. I cut mine about 24 inches long by about 8-9 inches wide and trim them narrower (about 6 inches) in the center. I bind my two layers. I like them long enough to go over the shoulder and catch the "trails".

That was a good link & I enjoyed reading the questions & answers at the end too. The pattern I had was for the peanut shaped ones like Bunnybcb had made but the instructions would be easily adaptable. Tomorrow I will be making these.

QW, when they are used does it matter which side is next to baby? Do the terry cloth stay nicely in place like the flannel? I mean so it does not slip off the shoulder.

Thanks for those measurements, the link also gave measurements & that info is SO helpful to me. My neice had a baby boy last night & I want to make some of these. I hear they are very handy & get used a lot.

I used the terry side up to the baby so it would absorb more. Then when it wasn't needed the terry was folded inside and the pretty was seen.

They also dry quite quickly when that is the only one you have and you are away from home for a while.

I did the peanut shaped ones when great-grandson was born almost three years ago. Used two layers of flannel, right sides together to sew, then turned right side out and top-stitched. No quilting. I loved them and so did everyone else that used them.

Oh, and very quick and easy.

When I made mine with the pre-folded diapers, I put flannel on one side only & did not use any batting inside...just the diaper was enough. I think some say if you put the flannel side next to your shoulder (diaper side up) it will not slide off your shoulder as bad. I think any way would work fine...I think I would like the flannel side up just to show off the pretty side & softer on baby's face. I have some made right now & will try to take a pic & post it later.

When I make flannel baby blankets they are usually square, which always leaves me with "extra" fabric. I like to take two pieces of this flannel and cut a peanut like shape for burp clothes. It fits the shoulder nicely.

I put both pieces right-sides-together. Stitch around, almost all the way...turn...and stitch all around the edge. This closes the hole and makes a nice flat burp cloth.

Oh my, I like that too. I am sorting through my fabrics now & hope to have some of these sewn today. I don't have any terrytowel fabric on hand & I can't easily obtain any of those prefolded diapers so I will work with what I have for now & see how they turn out.

Here are pics of some of them I made. These are for a baby boy. I made some for a baby girl also but forgot to take pics of them before I gave them to momma. I folded back the blue one so you could see the diaper on the back.

I use the Gerber birdseye 3-ply cloth diapers. I have been able to find them at one Walmart store. They are hard to find. The Walmart store closest to me does not carry them but the one in the town where I work sill carries them.

Just saw this thread, was called in to work yesterday and have been trying to catch up on emails and house stuff today. I did make those peanut shaped burp cloths out of flannel, and they worked really well. Very, very easy to make. I need to make some more, but this time for a boy, although I don't think I have any "boy" flannel. I do have some diapers, and some cotton with boy print, so may make some of those. The diaper burp cloths I was planning to make only have the cotton print going down the middle or across the bottom, with some ribbon trim. I'm working on a couple of bibs now for the baby, they'll be done in bright colors.

Nlk, those are super cute, I love your fabrics! TFS. I had drop in company twice today so didn't get to sew as much as I had wanted to, but I did get one made. Not bad for my first attempt. I plan on doing more tomorrow. I used flannel both sides, will upload pic & post it tomorrow.

Bunnybcb, when I get to walmart I am going to check to see if they carry those cloth diapers, meanwhile I will practice with my bits & pieces of flannel. These practice ones will be used by family only but I hope the more I make the nicer they will start to look.

Karen in Mississippi, that is the way I made mine but they are not perfectly peanut shaped, hope to do better on the second one.

Shawkl, that is a neat way to use up the left over flannell & will match the blanket if given as a gift. Good idea.

I have made lots of burp cloths. My daughter asked for more because the baby was a "happy spitter" according to the doctor. I use flannel, 2 pieces sewn together right sides and turned. I top stitch them. I use a peanut shaped pattern. They go together so fast. It takes me longer to cut them than it does to do all the sewing and ironing. I like to bundle several together, roll them up and tie with a cute ribbon.

Yes JJ I bet they look real cute tied in a nice ribbon.

I used some flannel I had on hand & tried my hand at making a burp cloth after reading all your helpful advice. I used a difference flannel for each side. This is my first one. My sewing is somewhat wobbly I'm afraid.

I was more pleased with my second attempt. I always consider my first of anything as a practice piece.

How do you get yours so nicely formed?

Do you trim close in your seam allowance?

Do you clip all around before you turn?

Do you press your seam allowance open before you turn?

Miss Lensews2, those turned out really cute. If you are like me you will find yourself making lots of them just in case you need them for a baby that you don't even know about yet.

I think you did a good job on your first two.

When I make burb cloths, I use the pre-folded diapers. On some I put flannel down the center on one side. On others I embroidery a cute saying, a picture, or the baby's name. I have also put rick rack or ribbons down the two center seams or across the ends. When my two DGD's were born 3 years ago, I made them receiving blankets out of the same flannel I put on the burb cloths.

Thanks Nicki, they are fun to make. I have a third one made now. I folded the 3 of them into a neat little square & tied with ribbon & they look so cute.

Thanks Meme, I am enjoying making these. Yours sound very decorative, bet they look real pretty. I like the idea of the matching blankets.

2 layers no batting, some were all flannel, some were one side cotton/flannel.

Nice Kim, I love the idea of matching another item, especially a blanket. I was thinking of trying to make a few bibs to match some of the B/cloths I have made.

I use prefolded diapers too. But I don't pretty up the face of the diaper. I turn the thin edges to line up with the edge of the thick part and stitch them down with colored thread and a fancy machine stitch. I finish the ends with a "binding" about 1 1/2" inches wide. I have also done some machine embroidery on them. For G-nephew whose initials are TNT, I ME'd a large firecracker and "Dy-no-mite" on one of his. His DD loved that one!
