I only managed to complete 9 months of the 2012 BOM but it is still plenty big enough. It is so busy though. I probably should have separated them with some calmer fabrics but I didn't - I hadn't intended to put much of a border on it at all since it was going to be used in a chair watching TV but I'm thinking something has to calm it down some. Ideas please - this group always has such wonderful ideas.

The picture is not the greatest - I don't have a place to hang something this large inside except the design wall and unfortunately it is not the best place for picture taking.

First of all...it is a gorgeous quilt! I'm still kicking myself for not doing it!

I don't really think it needs much of a border, but my first thought was to use the same fabric that you used to border the large blocks. Not sure what you would use for binding though.

I have no suggestions ... just a comment ...

how about a narrow border of black and then "piano keys" using the fabric scraps from the quilt.

So pretty, I like the idea of a light border, the same color/shade as you used in the background for some of the blocks, then bind it with the dark you used around some of the blocks...very nice quilt

I second Chanlady's idea, then use the black as binding.

I was going to say to make a 5 inch border of the frame color; can't tell if it's black or brown but what an awesome quilt!!

You didn't say how big the quilt is nor how big you want it to be soooo...

Borders are meant to 'frame' a quilt; stop the motion of the quilt. Since this quilt is so beautifully busy why not give it some breathing space by using a light border (possibly the lightest color in the quilt) around the quilt as is. Then finish it with a darker binding. Or if you want to enlarge the quilt further, add a small dark border after the light and add on the final, larger border, again in a light color and finish with the same color binding, or do a blanket turn with your quilt.

BTW, you sure don't need any sashing on this quilt. All the smaller blocks you did around the main blocks do a very nice job.

Love it! I don't think it's busy...I think the small blocks give it almost a watercolor effect.

If it really doesn't need to be any bigger, what about just binding in the big block frame fabric? I think that'll rein it all in nicely.

I don't think it needs to be "tamed down" at all. You spent so much time on the blocks and it shows.....the border deserves the same dedication. I think a plain border would not do it justice. I like the piano keys idea, or do a braided border - it seems a bit much, but it is lovely on "busy" quilts.

Forst - thank you so much for all of your kind words. This is truly the first time I've done something like this - and scrappy no less. I had a wonderful time even if I didn't do all 12. As it hangs right now it is about 65-70" square. I want to say each month was 22" with the small blocks.

I don't think I have enough of the framing fabric that was used around the main blocks but it gives me a color to shop for I've never turned down an opportunity to shop for fabric.

I kind of like the idea of a braid - I've never done that but it looks like something that shouldn't be too difficult.

Ohhh Royal~ I love it!! Your Mom is going to be overwhelmed! I really liked Trish's idea, a scrappy border of the lighter prints and then the darker border.. or braid. Have fun!

I like Paus..' idea. A plain border to frame the busy quilt. But if it needs to be a lot bigger, then a nice plain sashing, then different scrappy small blocks of the fabrics used within the top.

I think that simple small border will do it. I seriously thought about a braid but it is going to make it too wide for DM - I'm bumping up against the ideal width now Of course, I'd planned on making her something completely different but once I got this one put together it "said" it wanted to live at DM's house As an added benefit - all the different fabrics and piecing will help keep her mind engaged.

I think what I like most of all about this quilt is all the smaller pieces around the large blocks. And the focus blocks aren't symmetrical. Your eyes keep moving to see what you can find next.

You should check out the 2012 BOM final thread for some absolutely stunning quilts in all different styles and colorways...some even used all 12 blocks You'll recognize the main blocks and some of the smaller ones (I used some Sylvia blocks I had already done every so often in mine to get some use out of them since after doing less than a dozen I determined it was not happening

Shopping this weekend - for backing and binding fabric.
