Welcome to the 2012 Stashbusting Thread. I am Gonesewin and I will be starting a new thread for each month for everyone to post pictures (If at all possible) or tell about your stashbusting efforts. It does NOT have to be quilting! This can be any kind of sewing! There are just 2 rules to join us: what you make make should be mostly from stash and it should be finished during the month you post it as finished. There are no signups, or swapping or... Just this thread. Everyone is welcome! cksvett has graciously volunteered to send out surprises each month. Your name will be entered each month when you show or tell us about your stashbusted project. On the first of the month when I start a new thread, someone from my family will draw a name and the winner will be posted on that new thread. If your name is drawn please send your mailing information to cksvett so your surprise can be mailed to you. New This Year Royalboomer has graciously volunteered some of her "extras" as prizes too! So what I am going to do is this: Those who finish bigger projects or do multiples of 5 smaller items from stash will also be put into a separate drawing and one will be awarded a prize from Royalboomer each month! Cool Beans, huh? SEW, let the stashbusting continue! This month's STASHBUSTERS are: Marion2 Rainbow Handie Ann cksvett Mcpatches City/Sandie Brandyquilter gardenpat sewlove2quilt AngelaC --- Project Quilting/Needlework challenge #4 --- Jayardi Alexemmarose Gonesewin TO SEE July's THREAD GO HERE -----> http://boards.hgtv.com/eve/for...4011632/m/8353927067This message has been edited. I'm happy to see so many projects getting finished on this thread. I hope to add to the list again soon. I don't consider a block, singular or several, a finished project but I notice some are posted here. Those, IMHO, should be posted on the Sew n Tell thread since they are ongoing and not a complete project. These two separate threads can cover both categories just fine. Happy sewing!

Savedsinnr, DH is mailing your package this morning. Enjoy... Chris

I love seeing people use their stash for a block of the month type project... Chris

When a rule states it should be finished, I think quilts must be quilted and bound to meet that requirement. Am I being stupid or just old? As for BOMs, when I finish mine I post the pics on that particular BOM thread, like Funky Chicken which I'm making from stash only. I wouldn't post each block here. Just trying to get some clarification. Thank you. This message has been edited. Last edited by: quiltbea,

I see your point Quiltbea. Let me think on this a bit and I'll get back to you. Does anyone else have thoughts on this? *********************************** “May God give you...For every storm a rainbow, for every tear a smile, for every care a promise and a blessing in each trial. I agree with Quiltbea about the BOM blocks. Although the block may be complete, the "project" is not.

I made a "work" apron for my stained-glass teacher who is named Sam. Her business logo has butterflies. It is made from denim not jeans (as my other recent aprons have been). ![]()

Close up of the appliqued letters. The letters were cut from a sample fabric from upholestry fabrics. I thought it looked like a stained glass design. ![]()

Marion2, that is just too precious! Don't usually comment on any individual item as I don't want to slight anyone, but just couldn't help myself, Sam I Am... ChrisThis message has been edited. Last edited by: cksvett,

I think we are a casual group. When blocks are a one a month item, that month's project is completed. It will be later used in another project, but this item is as finished as it will get till then. Just like the tops I make out of the donated QWL blocks and use my stash for the sashing, backing and binding I furnish, but don't quilt the item, so it isn't "finished" but I'm using about 5 yards of my stash. So does that not count? Or the tops I sew for QWL and donate along with the backing, binding? Does that only count when I also do a pillow case? I think blocks of the month as a finished item. This thread is to encourage using your stash, lets not get "letter of the law" on this, more the intent of the law. Just my humble opinion... Chris
|
A project is finished when you say it is finished. If you are not going to do anything else to it than you are finished. A BOM is finished when you have the block done as you are not going to make more of that block. A quilt top is done if you are not going to quilt it but pass it on to someone else to quilt. just my thoughts. Handie Ann

Got my prize box from Royalboomer on Monday (was having computer troubles & couldn't post- sorry!). I'll try to get a pic of all the great stuff in the next couple of days...magazines, book, kits, fabrics, thread, ribbon, magnets...lots of good stuff! Thank you!!

l got my days mixed up and didn't get my July projects posted. l already have 2 projects finished this month but my internet is down at home so l can't post them yet. l'm at the Library today trying to catch up a bit! Happy Stashbusting to all! ====================== l would be unstopable IF l could get started!!!
|
Angela - that was faster than anticipated

Yipppppeeeeee! l'm back online at home!!!! Yeahhhhhhh!!! First here is one of my July Stashbusters that l didn't get posted. l made my DGDs matching outfits. The youngest one is wearing a dress with matching bloomers. The oldest is wearing the top l made to match. Her skirt is one she already had. l'm glad the older one still thinks it's cute to match her baby cousin. l'm going to enjoy while l can! ====================== l would be unstopable IF l could get started!!! ![]()
|
Angela's journal covers inspired me to use up some old old stash and make these in July, too. l know some of that fabric is over 20 years old! ====================== l would be unstopable IF l could get started!!! ![]()
|
Now, this is an AUGUST Stashbuster. l've had the ABC blocks for years but l did buy the backing this spring. lt has "school" words on it and the new mom is an elem. school teacher. Perfect fit! ====================== l would be unstopable IF l could get started!!! ![]()
|
This is an AUGUST Stashbuster, too. Total stashbuster for this one. l made it for our missionaries to Turkey. They have 3 girls and are now expecting a boy. l thought after all the years of pink they might like something bold for their baby boy. The backing l've had for several years. l bought it at Walmart when they starting taking out their fabric. l paid 50 cents a yard for it not knowing what l would use it for but couldn't pass it up. Worked out good! l'm giving thme the quilt Monday night when they come to dinner. That catches me up! Happy Stashbusting!!! ====================== l would be unstopable IF l could get started!!! ![]()

And the rest... Chris ![]()

I made 8 pillow cases - 2 sets of 4 each - for my son because he was complaining his didn't match his sheets or any other pillow case. Silly man, he lives here rent free with furniture I bought and I'm supposed to supply him with matching pillowcases? Also, this is another one of my orphan block projects. A while back, I made a yellow brick road quilt for the sister of a friend who was in a nursing home. I made the required number of blocks, but the measurements of her bed were smaller than the pattern, so I had an odd number of leftover blocks. Some I split and made two blocks out of one to even this quilt out, added borders, quilted, and what do ya know? Another quilt for Quilts for Kids! ![]()
|
McP - what a great way to use up the pieces left over Chris - that's a ton of pillowcases

Nothing to post yet but I'm getting close. I am working on the "ultimate mystery" quilt as a large bag of fabric all cut into strips, some attached to thangles, 5 blocks finished and 5 more in various stages of completion was donated to our charity group. I took it home to discover that there was NO picture and NO directions to anything started in the bag. Truly a mystery. I have looked in the bag several times and do like the fabric (complete line of fabrics used) but kept putting it back into the corner. Last Monday I started working on it and am close to having the top finished. Another UFO out of the corner. Happy Stitching...Lois

My verdict is this: cksvett kindly gives a prize each month for those who show us what they have finished. She is good with a block, or a potholder, a mini quilt, a quilt top or a king sized quilt being "finished" so anyone who posts their work will get in on that drawing - as long as it follows the 2 rules. Royalboomer is graciously giving a prize each month to those who make 5 or more small items or large projects or ones that are more involved. No one who makes a quilt block will get in on this drawing - unless it is one h3ll of a block
QUILTBEA -- I don't think you are being old or stupid. I think that if we were to follow the letter of the law then you would be right and a block is not "finished" unless it is backed, quilted and bound. But I can be "finished" with a block. If I am trying a new technique - as some BOMs do - I am "finished" with that then next month I'll make another and be "finished" with that. To clarify the rule
I was really meaning that it can't be something made years ago and have had around the house forever. Therefore, we will continue as we have done since I've become hostess of this thread. Carry on...This message has been edited. ...well, both of my July things were secret for awhile - one was the hug rug made with large hexagons for Pauline, you saw that - bless her heart I made an apron for Priscilla - this is custom fit just for her, includes long slender triangles as gussets in the sides ... it's also padded where the front plate screw bumps into the fold up part when it's being closed.. so no more tiny dings in her fine paint. I cannot change 'things', but I can change how I feel about them. Me. Wounded Warrior Project www.woundedwarriorproject.org ![]()

Hello, I wanted to share my stash busting project, I am very happy with it. I am not entering for prizes or anything, I just want to share. This is my Orca Bay mystery quilt from Bonnie Hunter. I didn't do it as a mystery because I am to fussy about color placement etc but I used the pattern and played along after the fact. This was entirely from stash! My husband thinks that means I have too much fabric but I think it means I used it well, lol! ![]()
|
Brandiquilter, I think you used it well also. It's stunning! The colors striking and piecing is incredible. Please don't tell us how many seams there are in this one!
|
I finished this earlier last week but couldn't find my camera until today! Here is my Bonnie Hunter's Quiltmaker magazine "Whirly-Girly" quilt all quilted and bound. You can tell it's from my scrap stash! pat ![]()
|
Here's the last of the flannel quilt panels I added borders to and quilted up. Anymore, I will have to piece flannel together. Also, short on sewing, but lots of quilting this month. Main sewing machine is getting a tune up. Pat, like that pattern. I may have to borrow it. What sizes are the blocks? ![]()

FIVE years from start: I call it Wonder Why? The one block wonder we started at first COF Retreat in Eagan Mn. I turned back to front to bind and quilting is by Sharon Mayers, Coventry RI.

Holy Samolies! You guys have been busy knocking down your stash! i am so impressed with all the work, and creativity! Well Done Ladies!

wow what a month of finishes...everyone's is gorgeous but Aunt Reba...that is really something. What a long haul but definitely worth it. Wish you were coming to Branson with it for show and tell. Next year in Pa.! Char

McP- they are 7 1/2" blocks. If you look at quiltmaker.com, they are in the Addicted to Scraps section by Bonnie Hunter. It's called Whirly Girly and is an easy way to use stash! Tonight I will put borders on another quilt I saw in a LQS last month. The book was almost $30 and I just couldn't bring myself to spending that much. So I went home and "winged it"! Don't know if the size is the same- it's what worked for me since I had an overabundance of 2" stash cut out? Hope to show you all a finished quilt by the weekend! Btw- I have also "decoded" a quilt I saw on-line that I saw and am using a lot of the 5" squares I got from KC1930's stash buster swap! I Love, love, love them! If you ever are able to be a participant in one, you won't be disappointed! Thanks again to KC! pat

Charlene: Hope to be there in June. The quilt had a long hiatus: I needed a WALL with table cover on it to work on the placement. Design wall-that's it. Now I will get back to the vintage sheet quilt I'm trying to actually quilt!!!

Great job everyone. I wish I was accomplishing as much as you ladies are. Pat...I will be watching for you to post those quilts. Carolyn Carolyn http://bransoncofretreat.shutterfly.com/ Our lives are like quilts - bits and pieces, joy and sorrow, stitched with love.

This weekend I'm going to AQS in GrandRapids and didin't want to carry a purse so thought I'd make myself a messenger type bag...had the pattern for quite a while & the fabric for even longer...lol!! It has lots of pockets for being so small. I just wanted something to carry my phone, camera, wallet & keys. When I finished it & tried to put in my phone and camera in...it was too small! DRATS!!!! I like how it turned out and am in the process of making another 1 but a bit bigger [almost finished and will post when I am done! This is the front... ****************************** Take time for kindness & for giving. Take time for friends & happy living! ****************************

Here's the 2nd bag I made...made it a bit bigger and added a piece in the side to make it wider. Fabric all from my stash! I bought it during 1 of the shop hops at 1 of the COF retreat but don't remember which 1. ****************************** Take time for kindness & for giving. Here is a back & side view...it looks more like a messenger bag now w/ the side [gusset] piece added. This 1 will hold all I need it too! eta: it has a pocket by the straps, too, so 4 pockets in all! My quilt guild is making a quilt to donate to the church that we have our quilt show and everyone was asked to make a 12.5" block. This is the [stashbuster] block I made...we have the border fabric so needed to make it w/ colors in that fabric. The church will raffle it off. ****************************** Take time for kindness & for giving. Take time for friends & happy living! ****************************

I was asked to make a chemo/comfort quilt for a woman where I work & the only requirement was "colorful". I think I succeeded there! I've got the top done, all stash. Her co-workers will be signing in the white spaces & I probably won't get it back & quilted before the end of this month (and I had to buy fabric for the backing anyway! I used the Pineapple Blossom pattern from Bonnie Hunter's QuiltvilleThis message has been edited. Last edited by: AngelaC,
