A friend of mine is considering a Janome machine, based somewhat on what I've read here on this message board. Thing is, the nearest dealer, she's familiar with enough to NOT want to do business with. Do you know a really good dealer Tulsa, Wichita, KC, Springfield or online that you could recommend? She is sewing machine literate, wants a good basic, mechanical machine, but has bought @ wallyworld prior. My only machine purchase at a dealer didn't work so out so well, so am not sure what benefit a nearby dealer could be.

Hey Karen ~ I bought my Jenny 6600 at Sewing Machine Express in Springfield... they have EXCELLENT customer service, and cut me a good deal!

I've too had a horrible experience at a dealer, in the past ... I've done quite a bit of biz with them on my little carry-around brother machine, and they always do me right.... AND they sponsored the COF in Branson

You can go to www.janome.com and search for a dealer there, but if she's willing to drive to Springfield, I recommend my friends ... ask for Kathy ... she's a doll

I don't think you could go wrong purchasing a Janome without a close dealer. I have a 6500P. It is and has been the most rewarding purchase I have ever made. I heard about it through this Board, and lucky for me it was at a time of a good sale. Bought it in 2004, and never looked back. Have moved away from the area where I lived, but so far no problems. It was a little pricy for me at the time. However it has been well worth it.

Depending on her price range,she has a large selection of Janome mechanical machines and they are all excellent...just depends on what she wants to do with it.

Many of the Janome Yahoo Group users have bought their machine from Brubakers an online & brick/mortar shop(Amy Smith is who I talk to) when there was not a Janome Dealer near or far to them.They are excellent and always willing to get on the phone and talk you thru it. I bought my 6500 from a former member of this board and had no Dealer near. Now I have one a hour's drive one way but I know more about the machines then he does most days. What I do have near is a Huska Varner dealer that has an EXCELLENT machine repair person in house.It is amazing how many machines I have taken in there for him to tweak or just give an opinion on(usually he tweeks it then to)or fix

Another question...The Sewist 50? was previously recommended as a good sturdy, basic machine...no longer seems to be made. Is there a current version of said machine?

I bought my Janome Horizon from a dealer I don't use for anything else. He's not the best at customer service; however, there is a Bernina dealer near my home that fixes, etc. all brands - that's where I'll take mine if an issue comes up. (My warranty is up so that part is not an issue)

The Sewist 500 still shows on the Janome page...It may have been replaced by the Magnolia .Look on Janomes page...you can also do machine comparisons on them side by side.

May, the machine recommended here a long time ago wasn't the 500 I don't believe. It may have been gardenpat who got beginner machines for her daughter(s).
I was hoping for recommendations based on personal experience. Guess everyone got the pricier machines cause they were so happy with their beginning Janomes.

Karen..I remember her talking about those,GardenPat bought 2 of those machines,she liked them so well...send her a PM and ask her what the name is,she is always so helpful but she's not on as much lately..

What would be a good mechanical machine you'd recommend?
If they have a digital display, they are computerized, right? Like the needle down feature of an electonic machine, but the machines seem fragile to me.

I bought Precious a mini Janome for her first machine, when she was 5... it was WONDERFUL! she's since graduated to a full size machine and uses my Brother ... altho she's got her eyes on my new Jenny

SS, my friend's youngins are all grown up, so that's not the concern...you know, some people just sew harder than others. My friend gives her machine s a workout!!!

Wildcat my first Janome was a New Home bought in 94, it is still going strong. I have 2 more plus my Elna which is a Janome in diguise! LOL! (Made by the same company)

DD has a White and loves my Janome better, I think it is because the throat is bigger than the White. The white is a great machine! Bought it from Joann's before they stopped carrying them.
