The baby shower was today. Sadly, I could not gift the Beary Patch crib size quilt because the Crayola Washable Marker did NOT wash out. The quilt was washed three times......the orange marker (used for the grid lines) is still in the quilt. Just a warning for anyone who is thinking about using these markers.

Maybe you could wash it again and try using a color catcher?? or some Oxyclean?

Karen, how awful for you. I hope you will find a way to get those lines out.

Thanks for passing along the warning. I have been tempted to use them for marking but just couldn't bring myself to do it.

A friend who owns a laundry swears by Oxyclean. With our heat markers are apt to become permanent. I did that on a short trip to the LQS one time. It was like I'd ironed those blue marks. I'd even add ice in my washer in this heat. That's what's recommended in spray bottles. Of course we need to also prewash especially on baby quilts and anything we use markers in. Chemicals might react to each other. Breaks my heart for you

Karen...that is such a bummer.... I would use Shout Gel(blue bottle) and wash again.I have to ask...did you iron over the mark's at anytime before washing.How long were the marks in? I ask because I use these all the time but I don't mark until I'm ready to quilt and I do not touch the iron to any part of the quilt before washing.

I do not use yellow markers of any kind nor orange or yellow chalk either because those colors I have had a hard time with in the chalk. I think I read yellow has sulfates in it and that is what makes them cling...probably the same for orange...anyone know????

I wonder what temperature the wash water was. When I have used washable markers (not necessarily Crayola brand) warmer water gets the marker out better than cooler water.

Karen, I hope something will work for you to remover the marks.

Karen - so sorry that happened on a special quilt! I quilted a multicolored, 6" square scrap quilt for Cincinnati Quilt Outreach and used all colors of the washable markers - including black - washed in Tide and warm water and everything came out.

I use Crayola washable markers all the time
and have never had any problem.

I hope you can eventually get them removed. KEEP QUILTING

I washed the crib quilt in cold water with a color catcher using Dreft. The third time, I added Wisk stick on all the lines. I never used an iron, but did have the lines on the quilt for three weeks. I'll wash it again using Tide, warm water and Oxyclean. I'll let you know the results. [finger's are crossed] Thanks for your help!

I always use chalk or baby powder in a ponce to mark. You can get pastel chalks in different colors at the Dollar General Store usually for a couple dollars. The last box that I bought had about 75 sticks in it.

I'm sorry you're having that problem. I've used the Crayola Washable Markers on every quilt that I've done that wasn't a straight SID. I've never had a problem with them, and some were marked longer than 3 weeks.

I've tested all of mine first by marking a scrap of each fabric, letting it sit over night, then rinsing in the sink. So far, I've not found one that didn't rinse out. I've gotten lax about pretesting, but I think now I'll make sure to do it.

I have never had a problem with wasible markers but perminent red marker. I soaked it overnight in dishwasher liquid like cascade . Good luck.

I just used a stain stick on the underarms of my husbands t-shirts and the yellow all came out I couldn't believe it. I will check what kind of stain stick it is....

Have you tried plain old rubbing alcohol I use it to get out lots of stains.... I also swear by Tech Stain Remover.. have you seen that where you live.

Can you give us an update?

DH scratched his leg and blood got on a mattress pad. It was a thick mattress pad for an air mattress at another house we have and it stayed on there for 2 or 3 weeks. I threw two of the Oxyclean tabs in the washer and the dry blood came right out. I was so surprised.

eta: He is a diabetic and I'm talking a LOT of blood. It took awhile to get him to stop bleeding. It was a pool of blood. My washer/dryer were at our new house.

Shampoo (got chemical stains off hands from a chemistry experiment gone awry) or Dawn might work. Land's End recommended it for grease in hubbs khakiis. I wonder how peroxide might work...don't know about it for fabric...but you can rinse with it in your mouth!
