Not sure I have the correct term, but the grain (or rice) bags that you can heat in microwave for soothing sore muscles. I have one that I've been using for my shoulder. I didn't make it, is it possible to add some aromatherapy fragrances to it or would that damage the fill? Would it need to be dry or could I sprinkle liquid good smelling stuff?
Thanks

As long as you don't wash the bag in the liquid, it'll be fine to just sprinkle some fragrance on it.

And btw, just in case it ever happens....if you do get your bag wet, just let it set out to dry and all will be well. Guess how I know?

When I make mine, I use flax seed {doesnt stink as bad as the rice} and add a couple drops of lavender essential oil {or mix a couple other oils that I have}. When the scent disapates, I put a couple drops on the outside of the bag. LOVE using mine!!

Where do you find flax seed? I use rice in mine but wouldn't mind trying the flax.

When I make my bags, I make them of a plain muslin and then make an envelope style cover for them. That way if the outside get dirty for some reason, I can remove it to wash.

I also make ribs in my bags so the rice stays in place. I leave one short end of the bag unsewn, turn it RSO, stitch a couple of seams the length of the bag and then fill the ribs about 3/4 full. Sew across the short end when finished filling. The bags are a little stiffer doing this but the warmth or coolness is more evenly distributed.

flax seed can be found in most grocery stores, even meijers. it is in a bag, usually with the special flours and such.

Thank you everyone. I have used flax seed in ones I've made. The ones I've been using were purchased. I do like the inner and outer idea. One day I may take these apart and sew ribs.
When I make the cool wraps, I sew "ribs" because it keeps the polymer from clumping at one end.

I have one I have had at least 20 years and it is filled with Cherry Pits. I bought it at a Fair. When I make them, I use long grain rice but the flax seed is something I will try.

I'm sorry, I was laughing so much at Pinecone's comment I forget what I was going to say. lollll

The first 'rice' bag I received was filled with corn. I searched out the maker and asked why the corn and what kind. Told her about using rice and she got incensed. Really. Told me not to use rice but corn because the corn was therapeutic per Indian lore. I've been making mine with rice ever since. I don't listen well at all.
