Happy October!
WELCOME TO THE 2012 HGTV FORUM BLOCK OF THE MONTH!

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

The theme this year is MAKE IT YOUR OWN!!!

ivy_cottage (Camilla) and I (CBQ, Little Red Hen) are 'egg'-cited and thrilled to be working with you on the BOM this year!

You are not swapping, exchanging or anything else, just make the blocks we suggest every month, show us a photo of your work, and be entered into a drawing for a wonderful prize. ALL board members are welcome to join us!

SEW ... each month, we will be doing a block from Quilter's Cache. We will also reveal some smaller blocks that you can make and join to your 12 inch block.

Credit: Marcia Hohn has graciously said we can use blocks from The Quilter's Cache again this year. Please read her Terms and Conditions at: http://www.quilterscache.com/. And follow the below guideline. "Should photographs of items made from Original designs be posted on your group website, they should also be clearly marked with the name of the pattern As I have it named, and that it is from The Quilter's Cache/Marcia Hohn." (Since you'll post your pictures in this thread, you will be covered by that statement.)

The smaller blocks are totally optional~ you can make what we suggest, make something else, or not make any at all! Make it your own!

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

This year we will challenge you to stretch your skills, ideas and creativity, while sewing and even trying new block patterns as well as methods. We are here to help! Use this thread to post your questions, problems anything related to the BOM~ and we will try to answer them for you.

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

One other important note~ we are NOT presenting you the blocks in any order. January's block will not go in the upper left hand corner of your quilt! Just to mix things up we are presenting them in no particular order, but if you join us for the year, in December we will reveal the layout we have chosen.

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
Step One~
Now ... without further clucking ... HERE is the OCTOBER Block ~~

All Hallows Variation

Step 2~ the mini blocks will be posted below this post~~

SO Y'ALL COME ON AND HAVE SOME FUN!!!
AND DON'T FORGET TO POST THOSE PICS WE LOVE PICS!

NOTE: If you have trouble posting pictures, or have a challenge with resizing them to post, you can SEND THEM TO ONE OF US VIA EMAIL, and we will BE HAPPY to resize them and post for you !!!

Step 2~ the mini blocks
Totally optional but lots of fun!! Smile

----Sashing ~ cut 2.5 inch strips.
Two are cut to 12.5 inches, and two are cut 16.5 inches.

----Five (5) “Alabama variation” blocks
For the 6-inch finished (6.5 un-finished) the rails are cut...
AA - 1.25 inches by 2 inches
BB - 1.25 inches by 3.5 inches
CC - 1.25 inches by 5 inches
BG squares are 1.25 inches
center is 2 inches

For 5 Blocks (semi-scrappy... kinda, sorta)

(5).....2” BG (background) squares

AA...(2) 1.25” x 2” print rails per block (mix ‘n match - 10 total)
A......(1) 13” x 2” print strip and
.........(2) 13” x 1.25” BG (background) strips

BB...(2) 1.25” x 3.5” print rails per block (mix ‘n match - 10 total)
B......(1) 13” x 3.5” print strip and
.........(2) 13” x 1.25” BG strips

CC...(2) 1.25” x 5” print rails per block (mix ‘n match - 10 total)
C......(1) 13” x 5” print strip and
.........(2) 13” x 1.25” BG strips

For A B and C, sew BG strips to top and bottom (long sides) to each print strip. Press toward print. Sub-cut into 1.25” strips (2 per block are needed). These strip units are then BG-A B or C-BG strip units.

The Alabama variation block is constructed in the Courthouse Steps sewing order in that pairs are added to top / bottom or sides around the center.

Sew a pair of AA rails (1.25”x 2”) to the top and bottom of a 2” square BG.
Press toward the print.
Sew the BG-A-BG strip unit to each side of the unit just made.
Press away from center.

Continue in the same manner to...
Add BB rails and the BG-B-BG strip units.
Add CC rails and the BG-C-BG strip units.

To achieve a scrappier look, you could sew individual rails to the 1.25” squares but they are very tiny. You could also make your strip units less than 13” so fabrics would not be repeated as often as in the blocks shown. Entirely up to you!Wink

The other two fill areas measure 4.5 inches by 6.5 inches...
You may use these fillers below or some orphan blocks or fussy cut a motif. We are thrilled that you have throughout the year, made this BOM your own.Smile

----Checkerboard squares~ Cut 1.5 inch squares. Cut 12 of various prints and 12 of various backgrounds.

----HST's~ You can put HST's here, QST's, squares, etc. Whichever you choose, trim them to 2.5 inches before sewing them together. (Sample ~ used 6 HST, upper left)

----Flying Geese ~ Sample ~ used 2 flying geese measuring 4.5"x 2.5" sewn to a 4.5"x 2.5" log.

Hello Ladies... I had to post early!
I will be going out of town and will be back next week. CBQ should be back next week, too, probably before me.

If you get your September block posted before the end of the day tomorrow, we will include you in the "Finishers List."

Have fun with "All Hallows Variation."

Thanks for the early post, I really like this one. I've liked the others too.

I've got the directions printed off. I'm off to do some painting, then finish September. More outside chores on this lovely day and then I think I can do October. Hopefully I'll be done long before the 31st this time!!

Keep calm and carry on

I've got the block printed but I might not go thru all those gyrations for the sidebars. I'm too far behind as it is.
Love the layout. Great job.

SewHappy, I think she is giving us options for the top left rectangle and the bottom right rectangle. This is a place she is suggesting that we "make it our own."

I'm thinking that grayish hst in the lower right is comming out. ugh... Why is it I have to look at a picture to see what is wrong with color placement.

Oh well what would I do tomorrow night if this was done? Deb

Pictures really are worth 1000 words, aren't they? Before you start ripping, try laying some of your other blocks beside this one and see if that grayish one still looks out of place.

DJ....The layout of that lower block is correct. The light and dark stripes are fine. Or do you just not like the color?

quiltbea; Its the color, too much gray and not enough blue. I am going to take pvillelou's advice and layout the finished blocks and see if it blends with the others.

If not - I will be ripping tonight Smile

Congrats Chlynn,
I was supposed to be fishing this week in Canada, but left and came back tonight. Boat trailer trouble and cold/snowy weather predicted so we turned around and came back home. Disappointed but very greatful that we noticed the trailer brake line was broken when stopped at a rest area, if we had been on the highway we would have had a serious accident. So anyways, I get to work on my Block this week, we'll see if I get it done. Pat

Sue was over today and we cut out the pieces and marked them for the block. After she left I thought I'd finish it and you have to do some real puzzle work to get the pieces lined up correctly.
CQwannabe, I like your block and see like a tumbling block in it that I don't see in mine, maybe after I post I'll see it, I think I have good contrast so if it is there I'll see it. Pat

patty, it is simply color placement that makes that optical illusion. Pretty cool to see it in CQwannabe's block!

And take another look at Handie Ann's block... she used 4 colors in her block instead of 3 giving the block yet another subtle difference but still striking!
