Is there anyone out there who is facinatated with this also? And what templates do you think is best? Quilt Patis or Brandy's ? or other? I have looked at their websites and just don't know. I bought some 1" June Tailor from Joann's and they seems to have kinda rounded corners for the hexagon shapes. Has anyone made that 3D petal one like this
http://b.casalemedia.com/V2/41968/88754/index.html?quiltpati.tripod.com/ I know she was on Simply Quilts and have read what is left of the instructions, cannot visualize how they do that part. I am so enjoying it, new to me thanks to Quilts and More magazine, that darling little coaster project on page 60 this current issue.
I saw that episode. It seems like they cut the smaller hexigons in half and sewed them into the seam. They may have even gathered and then sewn in. I can't remember. I have the Brandi pattis and one package of the Pattis. I don't see any difference in mine. Actually, I have mine mixed together and can't tell the difference. It seems like there was also a difference in price. Have you checked to see if there's a SQ video? There's a link up above the main message page of the Q&N board.

If you didn't know how old you were, would you worry about how old you are?
I am a huge fan of the GFG!! So much so that I've been working on a queen size GFG for the past 7 years. Granted, I haven't worked on it continuously, but I do pick it up often. I'm about 80% done with the handquilting. I saw the Quilts and More magazine and I just have to do the coasters! They are too cute! I'm also working on a table runner that is done with the hexagons. When I did the queen size quilt, I made my own paper templates. That took a long time With the table runner I'm using the quilt pattis and I like them a lot. I would think the template that has the rounded corners would cause some problems. I think you need nice sharp corners on the templates. Post pictures of your coasters when you're done!
I sent for the paper ones in the magazine, they are made from cardstock, real nice..I noticed the corners are much more sharp than the ones from Joann's. I could not even think of making a Queen size!!!! But why not??? I find it very relaxing and I love the design. Have you seen the video on the Brandy site, runs bout 1/2 hour, some things I didn't know about bias and the edges especially. There is a big difference in their prices, Brandy is cheaper. Thank you!
Here is a link to that page, click on the picture,,I had problems I could hear it but not see it, click again and there it was!
Thank you for the big dose of inspiration! My coasters are coming along nicely and I am enjoying it so much.Have had no luck posting pics but I will try.
Karen, ty for the PM!!!

I have the Pattis and love them. Several years ago made a couple of projects. Not quilts, but a pillow top and Table Runner. I love the 3-D ones, though. Have never seen those before. I must have missed SQ on those.

I made my own first with manila folders, then with the plastic tops of coffee, cocoa and such with a hole punched in the center so I can pop them out when done. I English piece them together so far.
Oh, is that beautiful!!!!!! I so appreciate that work there too, and so well done! The darling article is in the current Quilts and More Spring 2008 about page 60,that page is worn out on mine! Joann's has them, and I got mine at Kroger' border book Stores too and quilt shops...some Wal Marts. It is a Better Homes and Gardens magazine, subscriptions not available yet!
I looked for the video for SQ, it isn't there,#509.
It is wonderful that someone else sees the beauty in this!!!

i LOVE GFG quilts. i'm currently working on one. i'm using the paper templates that i found off ebay a year or so ago. i LOVE using the templates. I've not tried using the plastic, only the paper (and you baste the fabric onto the paper by piercing thru the paper and it gives you crisp points)
BUT the following book i've added a link to is so helpful!! it gives you the yardage needed for each row depending on the size of your hexs (3/4" up to 2 1/4" i believe) and depending on the size of quilt you want to make!! i found this very helpful, as well as all the photos she shows of how to make the hexs.
i like that brandi's link too!! thanks for posting that
I worked up a page of hexagons on my computer and print to butcher paper. The most tedious part is cutting them out one by one. Then I press them onto the wrong side of my fabric, cut it out, and hand sew them together the English paper piecing way. I have several 'flowers' done, but nothing is joined yet.
I love this pattern too. We had a ladies retreat several years ago at our church which had a quilt theme. I was beginning to get interested in quilting because of the planning involved in this retreat. I spoke about this quilt pattern and even found a GFG at an antique shop. It isn't an antique since it's machine quilted. It's a little scrappy and may have been made from clothes. The binding is about an inch wide on the front side of the quilt! I have a special place in my heart for this quilt since it started me on my quilting journey. One day, I'll attempt to make one, but for now, I'll enjoy my 'antique' find. Kim
I loooove my quilt patis! I am doing a twin sized quilt and I think the GFG is the most fun and relaxing hand work I have found yet. It isn't demanding, the colors make me happy (1930's repros), and it is so portable! I haven't worked on it for about 2 months because I have done so much bobbin lace, but the kid's swimming lessons start up in mid-June, and the GFG is my favorite beach-work!
I got instructions on how to make the 3-D flowers along with an order of Patis. I can't remember if I ordered it separately or if it came along with the regular instructions. I will try to dig it out this afternoon and see how it's done. If I recall, the instructions weren't difficult.

I love the GFG too and am working on one that is Christmasy...poinsettias and Christmas fabric. I made one a couple of years ago for a friend and she loved it. I decided to make one for me too, to go on my table at Christmas, but...the rate I'm going, I'll be about 90 before I finish! Anyway, I bought my hexs at "connectingthreads.com" and then just bought some template sheets and cut my own since I need so many to make the size I want. I don't think the "store-bought" ones were any particular brand, but my "home-made" ones work just as well. You may want to just make your own too.

OK - I finally bit the bullet. I did see the Patis showcased on a SQ episode several months ago. I still have an e-mail in my inbox about where to go to purchase some of the quilt patis - just had never "gotten around to it". Now I bought this magazine and the coasters are so darned cute - got me to thinking about them again. Saw where there was another source - Brandy's, and I just ordered some 3/4" and 1" size (added the 1" size since the shipping would remain the same )
Can't wait to try them out and love that there are videos to refresh my brain...

Just to be clear, the ones in the magazine are 1/2" and 3/4" but of course you can make any size you want! Isn't this fun project to make? I love the videos, those bias edges, I had no idea! brandy's is not fancy, but she covers every little thing!

I actually looked in the magazine to see what size I needed - saw the 3/4" and didn't look any further. I only added the 1" size since I could add so much for the same shipping charge. We'll see how the 3/4" size works out. That seems so tiny

i don't think i'd want to go any smaller then the 3/4... the 1" for the queen sized quilt i'm making now seems small.. even though you are doing something tiny, you still want to be able to see the fabrics.. so i would think the 3/4 will be great royalboomer

I read somewhere the 1" is kinda the standard for a quilt,of course you can do anything you want!
Wouldn't it be neat to make flowers from all the scraps of the quilts and other projects we make and/OR from the children's clothing as they grow up.what a nice memorial that could be!!!
