Did anyone make one of these quilts? I bought my first "jelly roll" and found a free pattern on Moda Fabric website. It worked up really fast.

Back in Feb...pville was working on one Missouri Quilt company has a video how to and several other ladies also did them here. If you use the Find at the top of the page and just type in 1600 jelly roll lots of items come up here and you can see some with different twist to them.

My local quilt guild had a challenge to see who could sew theirs first. I won. But mine was more like a 1900 quilt because I had more than the usual strips. I also added extra white squares between each strip. Here is a pic. I call it Northern Lights.
Here's the top I made at Magnolia last year. I added the flower after I got home and I added a brick red narrow border and a wide blue border. I would have sworn I had a picture of the completed top but can't find it.
Obviously, these are not 1600" quilts but they are made with that concept in mind. A doll quilt and my summer bag. Sorry don't have separate photos. This message has been edited. Last edited by: paus4quilts,

I made this one - unfortunately, the roll I purchased only had 5 different fabrics in it. I added a couple strips from stash. I called it Ocean Jelly because the colors reminded me of the ocean.

..... you know, those quilts and projects get prettier and prettier every time they are shown. I looked at the pics last night of the gift one I did - that is downright pretty. The couple that got it was so thrilled, the thank you note was spilling over with adjectives! I have 4 beautiful kind of mod prints I am going to cut into strips and make my own new jelly roll = and of course add some others with it ... and I love that Northern Lights - that is just stunning ... so thanks for bringing this up again - I needed some fresh mojo.

Guess I never took a pic of finished quilt but here's pic I have

I was going to do this as a 'class' with a lady who took half her strips of fabric and cut them in half, then, took squares like Indy did and then sewed them up, grabbing a full stip, and half a strip and a square when ever she felt like it and the results were fun! She was surprised at where the squares lined up on the quilt and the 1/2 strips really broke up the strips nicely. I do not remember exactly how she said she had done it, she was just playing around and thought she would try the idea she had.
One day, I will make one of these (I finally have a couple jelly rolls.... So now I can just 'do it'!!!! It is on my list of things to do because it's just so much fun to see what they look like!!
Love the pics!!!!

...these are all so interesting - I just moved my plan to NEXT instead of SOON ... I need something quick and easy and fun - and have it turn out pretty ... again, thanks for starting this thread. Hey out there, any more pictures? This is a really nice review ..... and the neat thing with this is it can be made small for a crib quilt, med for a lap or wheel chair quilt, or a bed quilt for the dorm or home!

I've done several. One of my quilt groups worked in small groups and did a "relay race" that was really fun. I didn't tell them ahead of time what we were going to do so they really enjoyed seeing what we ended up with. The four quilts were then tied and donated.
Oops, looks like there were five quilts, not four. This was only a few weeks ago and I had already forgotten! This message has been edited. Last edited by: pvillelou,

I've never made one of these but am wondering how many strips you would need to make a lap sized one. Anyone have any ideas?

shey..
here's one i did.. our quilt guild did the race too.. it was fun.. my strips were from fabric leftovers from when i made my Ocean string quilt.. so it was a "jelly roll" of my own making..

.. I knew this question would c ome up - and i didn't get an answer ready!!! Dang me ... I'm guessing about 1/2 a jelly roll ... most jelly rolls have about 40 strips .. so if the avg is '1600' inches, about half would be roughly 800 inches.. sounds like a plan to me! remember we usually end up having to do some squaring - and if you need it bigger, add borders, if smaller make the backing smaller and fold the front to the back for binding .... this is just a fill in til someone comes along with a calculator ... LOL

I made one (just the top is done yet) but was wondering if anybody knew I many strips it took for a king and a queen? Thought of doing a camo one for my nephews 30th b'day in April. They are sure some beautiful ones shown.

Everytime I see this subject and the finished quilts - want to do one. So going to look through those binding scraps and see what's there to make a quick quilt.
Love the pictures.

My notes say a Lap Quilt is 50" x 60".
If you were to make a quilt with a 5" border on each side, you will need 25 - 2 1/2" strips. If you use smaller borders, you'll have to add strips accordingly, remembering your strips are 2 1/2" x WOF. WOF = approx 40".
Without the 5" borders you'd need about 30 strips.
I think this is about right.
