Ladies, I need inspiration for a log cabin quilt. I am hoping to make one before I return to the States in 2014. It will be a gift for my mother, who has often asked me to make her a quilt, and I have told her one day, one day, there are many reasons why I have put off making her a quilt, but the main reason has been I just didn't think she deserved one because she was such a horrible mother...I have forgiven her for many things, but never forgotten. This coming year I would like to be at peace with the past, and I think this quilt will be a healing journey for me. She and I had a few nice chats while I was home this fall, and it was odd, but also enlightening how she recalled the past, compared to my recollection, got me to thinking that I could hold onto my grudges or just let them go...because after all if she had never given birth to me, I would never know the beauty of a wonderful grandmother, or have my son and DH in my life. After giving birth to my son, I realize that; that in itself is a great feat. I asked her what her favorite quilt pattern was, and she said a log cabin. I recall a beautiful scrappy quilt my great grandma had made...I think it may have been a barn raising, not quite sure, the blocks were set in a way that they seemed to flow sorta like fans... please show me your pictures and inspire me!!!

Sounds like an excellent path you have set yourself upon.

My son wrote a paper for one of his college classes and showed it to me. It was about his Dad's and my life together and subsequent divorce. His emphasis was on the anger and arguments we had all the time. I was astonished. There was seldom any anger in our household, and the arguments didn't occur until the very end which was a very short period of time. He, however, had a very different perception. I was glad he showed me the paper and we could clarify that period of his life.

I hope your talk with your Mom did help you.

Thersia that is the pretty log cabin I've ever seen

After seeing the one made by Margaret Handlin that Quiltaholic showed I'm kinda embarrassed to show mine, but here it is. It was my first queen size quilt - made with flannels - hand quilted.

This is the Elm Creek Pattern..

Q. when I looked at the link paus posted, that quilt just jumped out at me...it is so stunning, I'm nearly ashamed to say that if I ever made a beauty such as that, there'd be no parting with it...does that make me greedy or proud?

The one you did for your customer is very similar to the one my great grandma had made and always displayed it on her bed.

Took me a few minutes to find this picture of the Log Cabin one I made DH for Christmas in 2008. Sue helped pick out the colors and kept me sane while I was making all those blocks. It is king size and was quilted by our LA quilter. She did an awesome job keeping it outdoorsy with leaves and branches. DH loved it and it is still on our bed.
PS Ky, It is always better to clear the air while we still can, because once it is too late it is really too late. You'll feel better too. Ts and Ps while you decide. Pat

This is my first log cabin and very simple.

Here's one of the most striking log cabins I've ever seen. I had to really study it to realize that it was a log cabin!!

And here it is up close with the block drawn on.

And, then there's this one which is hanging in a log cabin dating from before the Revolutionary War. This one is probably close to 100 years old.

I really love all the pictures of the log cabin quilts, it's just amazing that one block can inspire so many different quilts.

I must admit it's making it harder to choose a pattern, because I'm loving them all...thank you all for the pics and encouraging words.

Sue the clamshell log cabin (the first pic you showed) One of my friends here is strictly a hand sewer, and she started her log cabin clamshell quilt as I was leaving, and finished it before I returned. It is truly stunning!

FFG, that clamshell log cabin really caught my eye! Do you know who made it or the designer? I'm thinking something like this could make an interesting mini. If it used a "real" log cabin blocks I think copyright wouldn't be an issue but these are different - and pretty cool IME.

OOOh...these are all such beautiful examples of log cabins! Gorgeous! It is one of my favorite blocks...simple, classic and pretty easy to do!

Bozie, that quilt was at a show in Mobile, AL that Warm Buns and I went to a couple of years ago.

Just did a quick search and it appears to be a Kaye England pattern called 76 Clambones.

Also, Joann Belling teaches several classes using log cabin blocks, one of which is an elongated version of the clamshell.

(Well, shucks, I just learned she's in Des Moines and that's where I spent Thanksgiving! I'll have to remember that for spring time. Maybe I can find a class somewhere while I'm up there.)

Oh, the Kaye England design looks like the picture you showed. Don't think it would be that difficult to draw but since it's so unique I'll save it in my "food for thought" file with the name of the designer - in case I ever make something similar. Thanks for your posts about this.

...I made this one for my daughter using Asian fabrics, the center blocks are fussy cut from a lovely asian fabric, they are poppies.

Bozie and Sue...I rang my friend up to ask her to please bring her pattern to our Friday sit and sew...well bo was I ever trd faced, when she said "Trish, I got it out of one of your books" LOL...guess my Wilson's Disease is kicking in

For s &G's I looked on line for the pattern of the first log cabin quilt that Quiltaholic showed I found it at AnimasQuilts.com It was desined by Jackie Robinson and she only wants 20.00 for a copy of the pattern. I will have to think hard about this pattern. I forgot the name of the pattern is Eureka!

Kentucky Sunshine, thanks for those pictures. That Leisure Arts pattern looks like the same thing as the Kay England design Sue posted a link to. Does the book give credit to a designer? (The folks at AAQI are very careful about giving credit to designers. That's why I usually just make up my own rather than spend a bunch of time tracking down the person to whom credit is due.)

Here is a log cabin I did a few years ago.

I have always loved the log cabin pattern but these are above the simple. I am such a sucker for anything that either is hard to do or looks hard to do so of coarse I am going to want to make the quilt that Q. showed and the clam one. Check back in 10 years and see if I am finished or even started yet.

Wow! some really beautiful log cabin quilts.
Here is MY one and only one I've made.
I pieced it on one cruise and did the applique on another. Then quilted it on my longarm.

Thanks for checking. Sounds as if the design may be in the public domain if the pattern is published by two different people. I'll still have to make sure about that - IF I decide to give it a try. No guarantee of that!

I actually paper pieced my logs. Drew the size I wanted. I was afraid I couldn't get them to all come out the same size otherwise. The flower and leaves I just drew on my own also.
The fabrics are all different cat and dog prints.

Here's my Snake River log cabin. I love this quilt and after the holidays, it will be quilted so it can go on my bed.

Ohhhhh my gosh katiemedarlin, that is just lovely, and it is even in the color purple...she asked for a purple log cabin

...my gosh, isn't it absolutely amazing how different every single quilt looks using the same block??? I really hadn't realized the huge variety of LOOKS that block could have.
