I really like the feel of Aurifil 50/2 but it is no longer available in my area (when you need thread, you need it now). I need suggestions on what to use. I would prefer a thread that is not to thick. Help appreciated.

Well don't tell the quilt police but I use a Gutterman or Mettler poly for piecing. Most of the cotton threads are just too thick and take up too much seam allowance.

Gutterman is on sale at JoAnns. I prefer to buy on sale when I try something new. Every machine is unique as are our own preferences. I use Mettler when I can buy it on sale but have a big stock of Connecting Thread since it's so inexpensive.

I'm with you about liking Aurifil. But it's hard to find in my area also so I usually get Gutterman. I can't compare to Sulky or Mettler since I've not used either of those. Thread is so expensive but I've decided it's worth to get something better than Coats & Clark.

.... I like lots of threads ... usually a specifically needed color will grab my attention before a brand... I also like Mettler but
I buy cones of Maxi Lock for most of my sewing.

I've been using Mettler. It runs through the machine well, but it is a little linty. Good colors.

My LQS just started carrying Aurifil. Can't wait to try it.

Thank you all for the input. I will try Mettler for now, but will keep my eyes open for Aurifil.

I once had a conversation with a thread salesman and he told me that a poly thread will eat through a cotton quilt......and that in a hundred years, it will be ruined and not an heirloom. So, any especially nice quilts should be done with cotton. One you know will be loved out...your choice...lol

I use Masterpiece or Aurifil for piecing. Yes they are hard to find.

stillsuzzz that is a myth about poly cutting into cotton fabric.

http://www.superiorthreads.com...th-tradition-or-myth
The traditions, myths, and rumors that polyester thread will tear the quilt are not true. Under extreme use, a strong polyester thread might, but so will a strong, glazed cotton thread. Under normal use, softer non-glazed threads will not tear through the fabric and it is perfectly fine to use any type of quality thread, except nylon. Nylon will go brittle and discolor over time. Choose your threads based on quality, feel, and appearance, avoiding wiry glazed threads. Although they are rarely labeled as such, if the thread is stiff and wiry, it most likely has a glaze coating.

...Sandy glad to see you posted that - I too have always used what I like - most of the polys, like Singer, are cotton and poly anyway. When you come right down to it - cotton rots!
