OCTOBER stashbusting -- join us :)
Welcome to the 2012 Stashbusting Thread.

I am Gonesewin and I will be starting a new thread for each month for everyone to post pictures (If at all possible) or tell about your stashbusting efforts. It does NOT have to be quilting! This can be any kind of sewing!

There are just 2 "rules" to join us: what you make make should be mostly from stash and it should be finished during the month you post it as finished. There are no signups, or swapping or... Just this thread. Everyone is welcome!

cksvett has graciously volunteered to send out surprises each month. Your name will be entered each month when you show or tell us about your stashbusted project. On the first of the month when I start a new thread, someone from my family will draw a name and the winner will be posted on that new thread. If your name is drawn please send your mailing information to cksvett so your surprise can be mailed to you.

New This Year Royalboomer has graciously volunteered some of her "extras" as prizes too! So what I am going to do is this: Those who finish bigger projects or do multiples of 5 smaller items from stash will also be put into a separate drawing and one will be awarded a prize from Royalboomer each month!

September's Stashbusting thread:

Here is my Spiderweb quilt done all with stash. The binding is also made from stash. Because I find that if I make the binding when I am finishing the quilt it will get done, if not it ends up in a UFO pile with only that left to be done.

I don't know why I need to play these mind games with myself Smile. But I works for me Big Grin.

I started this wallhanging in Branson in KYSunshine Quilt As You Go Class. Not only has the fabric been in my stash since DS was in college, but all of it was free - he brought home 2 boxes of fabric from the interior design classrooms they were throwing out!

I don't have pics to show (at least not yet) but I'm sure working on reducing stash! My guild did four jelly roll race quilt tops last week and will be coming to my house soon to tie them. I've been sorting through stash and have backings for all of them. I bought batting for two but for the other two, I am piecing leftover batting from previous quilts. Also I have pieced a top for QOV. I'm not sure if that counts as stashbusting since that's what I bought the fabric for even though it was a long time ago.

Oh yeah, I have bindings made for all of those too - all from stash.

P.S. I know this doesn't meet the rules since these are not finished but I am so excited about using so much stash that I wanted to share with you.

Goodness! Got to love this thread!
i started cleaning my sewing room, and trying to organize fabrics..groan.
found a quilt/blocks i worked on years ago, when i first started this "habit". So i finished sewing up the blocks, 56 of them, to make a rail fence type quilt.
i am so glad i had the sense to keep pattern/pictures and thoughts on paper, all together with the fabrics, in a clear bag!
I got half my room cleaned up..then i quit when i started sewing these blocks together!
Tomorrow is another day..maybe finish cleaning, maybe sewing..it will be a coin toss!

I just got finished backing and binding my scraps to treasure quilt and all of it came from my stash. I can't post pictures for two reasons. One it's my STT quilt and two I can not find my new camera. I have my old camera on the charger.

I am working on a family reunion quilt of red white and blue siggy blocks. I worked on it some in Branson. Hope to finish it next.

I also have a quilt in the quilt frame that is a string quilt my mother pieced for my sister last Christmas. All the strings came from my scraps and the backing and binding will come from my stash.

I forgot to say I love all the projects on this thread. This is the first time I have looked at this thread. I dont know why. I use stash all the time.

I cleaned my sewing room. It took me 8 days in the two weeks leading up to the COF retreat in Branson. So, I am going to use this thread to motivate me to finish some of the stuff I found started in that room. Jeeeeezzzzz you would think I was a h o a r d e r or something.

Great projects. Oh how I love to see fabric, that was formerly stash, used up & turned into great finished projects.

I am working away but not using any of my stash material yet. My niece bought all the fabric for the items I am currently working on. Can't wait to get back at stash busting when I'm done.

Way to go stash busters! Keep up the good work.

I've been trying to whittle down my stash of "why did I buy this?" fabrics and some that others have given me but I never would have bought. Unfortunately, there still seems to be as much there as before this latest surge of making donation quilts.

A few years ago, my guild had a workshop on freezer paper piecing. I don't like the method so never made enough blocks for a large quilt. However, I thought the colors would be suitable for a baby quilt. I found a nice dotted fabric for the back as sell as something to use for borders. DH helped me get it spray basted and I just finished with the machine quilting and binding.

This top was a one-day online mystery. I decided I don't want to make more of these blocks either so made another baby quilt out of them.

For a long time when my Mom made quilts, she would never use more than one fabric with a design in a quilt, all the rest were solids. She also preferred pastel colors. After I inherited her stash of leftovers, it has had little used out of it. Last week I put together two baby quilt tops like this. This one has a tiny green floral back, the other will have a solid green back like the border.

I'm not sure where these will end up, maybe the health department. But first, I'd like to get a couple made from boy colors.

Some members of my guild had a jelly roll relay race recently and ended up with 5 tops. I donated enough strips from my stash for one of them. On Tuesday, a few of the members came to my house and we tied them. I donated fabric from my stash for the backs of four of them. I bought a king size batting that was large enough for three of the quilts but pieced some of my scrap batting for the other two. I even had enough crochet thread on hand to tie them.

P.S. The stripes really do go across the quilt. It's the angle that I took the picture that makes it look like they go the length of the quilt.

Every piece? How do you know I didn't go and buy my fabrics for the challenge??? I love you Angela but I can't count this as a stashbuster unless you get everyone to say they used only stash...If they do, then I'll add mine too! Wink

Here's one I did make from stash...Just a quickie to go in the guest room that our exchange student is using this year.

Pvillelou...wowser is right! You sure have been busy & I love the fruits of your labour, especially that pastel one. Great job!

Can't wait to see Angela's S2T quilt & all the other S2Ts as well.

Gonesewin wish I could make a quickie quilt that turned out as nice as yours did. Will be nice for your exchange student to use.

Let me clarify...every piece that I provided for my S2T quilt (my extras, my bonus squares, backing, batting & binding) as well as the squares from 26 of the 41 participants (me included) came from stash! Razz So, it was mostly stash (several yards anyway).

well, then my S2T is a stashbuster too Smile I even took a piece of white backing and dyed it so I could use it instead of going and buying some Big Grin

I love this thread and hope to make the time to join y'all. Actually, I do make lots of baby quilts from stash.

Mary Lou, I remember that New Year's mystery online with the baskets. I needed a step where they told you the unit should now measure these dimensions and it's time to trim if they don't. So, my baskets were a bit off. Instead of arranging them like you did, mine had to go all upright. I staggered the rows with an extra piece of fabric at the top or bottom.

It would be fun to do another mystery ... someday.

Gonesewin, that's a cute quickie for your exchange student's room. Smile

Kim: No, the potholder does not open up. It's like those coasters we've made but an extra piece is added in the middle then the cathedral curves like on the 10 minute block idea.

This one I made 1 yesterday, and a matching one today. The denim with the pink flamingos is from an old sleeveless top. I kept putting it in the goodwill bags, then taking it back out. Just knew I would use it for something! The pillows worked out great for our sunroom!!

I do about 20 of these a year - considering I need at least 54 to make the quilt, I thought I'd post these 20. Started these by sewing two 2" squares (light & dark) into pairs while in Branson. No stash was busted - these all came from scrap bins!

McP -- if you need 54 of those blocks for a quilt, just what size are those little squares you're using????? That's gonna be one stunning quilt when you get it finished.

The pattern is free on the internet -

http://www.brandysquiltpatterns.com/ChicletsFree.pdf

It calls for 2-1/2" strips. BUT, I had a shoebox full of 2" squares so that's what I'm using. Each block comes out to be 9-1/2" square. I want to make at least a twin size quilt and figure it will be a 7 block x 9 block project. I have about 32 done so far. Easy sewing.

McP- that has always been one of my favorite patterns and the price (free and on-line) puts it into the "all-star" category!!

Our Church quilt group met yesterday and we met at my house so moms with little ones could just bring them along and have them play in our playroom. 8 young moms and 10 littles came and made our new block of the month (actually I'm using a free online BOM from 2006!) good time was had by all and I busted some stash by having BOM kits made up for the group!

Today I'm watching 2 of my GKs- 3-1/2 and 1-1/2! Oh, how I love that playroom so that all the toys and kiddie stuff can stay in one room!!! Now if only I could set up my sewing machine up in there while I'm watching them!!! Wink. Well, at least I have my i-pad in here!! Smile

I did get a chance to start PPing a fire truck baby quilt for 2 soon-to-arrive GSs!

Great job everyone!!!!
