What is so special about this fabric that you would pay this amount for it...Has anyone ever bought any of it...If so, is it worth the 35.00 per yard...I think this is the most expensive 100% cotton fabric that I have ever seen.... Eek

I have never heard of it. And I can say, I am unlikely to ever buy it at that price. (Even if I win Powerball tonight). The only reason I can think of that the price is so high is because it is coming from England - but even that is not a totally reasonable explanation.

A Euro is $1.58, British Pound is around $2.00
but that wouldn't explain THAT price! Yikes

Q - When Rob was in England this spring I asked him to buy me some fabric. He said he walked into the store and the cheapest cotton fabric he saw was about $24-$26 a meter and that most of the prices were even higher...needless to say he didn't buy me any - smart man, I would have kicked his butt spending that kind of money on cotton. Eek

Lawn is lovely and wearable. See the "look and feel of silk". You use this for fine summer dresses. JMHO

Um, Reba, not even for making a dress if my sister (who can tailor like a pro) were making it. There are just too many other alternatives out there. I mean you can get 100% silk from JA's at $16 per yard.

Liberty is well known for their print fabrics, and fortunately they're not as appealing to me as something like a Hoffman metallic print. One year I was in their store in London during the big summer sale and I decided they STILL weren't worth it at half-price. Last time I was there, about a year ago, they only ones I liked were around £18 per metre so the price isn't off the wall in comparison.

I have a feeling that mostly just the uppity-ups who can afford to have someone custom make their clothes have them made in lawn. I should have added that in the beginning. I remember reading literature (literally) where the dresses were made of fine lawn. I used a lovely knit once where it was $18.00/yd for a two piece top and long skirt with a jabot for a wedding (in fact TWO) that was worth every penny.
I also puchased one yard of fabric matching my purchased occasional chair to make an ottoman cover. It was $35.00/yd. I added denim to the bottom to match and make it long enough. That too was a good idea. We bought an ottoman that was either damaged or left over and then covered it to match. If you want I'll take a pic for you.

I remember when the dollar was one to one to the pound and fabrics at Liberty were still out of sight. I found a liberty fabric blouse here at a resale shop for $2 and cut it up for quilting, it was the softest cotton lawn woven so perfectly.
I'm off to Japan next month and hoping to find some good cotton there, I'm expecting that they will be more ** than here but some of their prints are so cute for quilts. I know the silks will be stunning too.

It is beautiful fabric. I bought enough one time to make DD an Easter dress. It was $2.40 a yard then, when our cottons were less than a dollar. Fortunately she was small! It is like silk, but a little too soft and sheer for anything but a wall hanging.

In 1982 I paid $60/yard for fabric for a dress. It was gorgeous, gorgeous and felt wonderful. I was back at work after having a baby and needed something that made me feel powerful and in control. That dress did. I felt like I could conquer the world. I cut out the pattern and took it to the fabric store, laying it on the fabric to decide precisely how much to buy. I don't think I'd ever spent as much as $4/yard before then. LOL

I stumbled upon, and believe I posted, a comment on here about some Japanese cotton fabric I found on line and the prices were in the double digits per yard. About the same as has been shown here. I'm sorry, it is not worth it to me.

This reminds me of an ongoing commentary between me and my oldest son about the price of gas. "But, Mom, in Europe they've been paying......" That is their problem, not mine.

I'd rather have that steak once in awhile as opposed to paying that much for fabric.

Hi girls,

Just to let you know that in our quilt stores here in Canada we start paying $17.00 a meter that is only 3.5 inches longer than your yard. for quilting fabric. Some of our batiks can run over $25.00 a meter. I sew way too many quilts to pay that price and really have to hunt the sales to get fabric to keep me busy.

I would love to be able to get to the States and buy your great stuff at my sale prices. Even if we order online we get hit with duty that can double the great price we found on line.

I think we all like to quilt and are determined to get the best value for every penny spent. Good luck on your bargin hunting.

Man...we're blessed to get suberb quality cotton at LQS prices of roughly $10 a yard!...and still we complain. Frown Sometimes you just don't know how well off you really are!

So, when we find a sale...it's really bargain basement prices! Yeah! Smile

On another quilting link, a very nice lady from England "posted" me a copy of some quilt patterns for 36" square NICU quilts, which will save me tons of time to break down the pattern sizes. As a thank you, I emailed and got her husband to find out on the sly what fabrics she is missing from her collection or perhaps hard to find. He replied small to medium plaids, so I made up a box of about a dozen pieces of FQ's and a few 1/2 yd. pieces and sent them to her. You might think this was too much to do, especially with the postage, but she didn't expect anything by a thank you in return. She got the box the day after her birthday, and I was thrilled to hear how delighted she was with my selections and it was the best present she got that year. It's amazing how a few bits of fabric make us smile, doesn't it? She lamented the pricing there for good quality cotton is crazy, and most people tend to take garments apart and recycle or do mail order to the states. Ladies, we should consider ourselves lucky to have a vast range of fabrics and notions at our cyber fingertips. Another reason I'm glad I live in America.

P.S. Gas high here? In England where Mary lives, it's over $16.00 a gallon.

I've paid "lots" for a particular fabric though it is the exception and not the rule. Fabric definitely costs more out of the US. We don't know how fortunate we are sometimes. I absolutely love silk - but it has to be the good quality. Sometimes you truly do "get what you paid for".

I will agree that you get what you pay for most times - but you still have to be careful. Just because it is high quality does not mean the price is always worth it. Even for dresses I have worn to weddings I have not spent more than $20 per yard. And as much as I love quilting, I do not see how I could afford to pay so much for a cotton for quilting. I'm with paus - I like having steak (or even hamburger) every so often.

Interesting, different locations & different prices. I can understand the high price for high quality specialty fabric but I have to wonder w
