I got around to experimenting to make a placement to match the table runner. Here's the instructions.

Placement fabric - (didn't want to cut up and mess up good fabric) You can get 2 placements from a 6-1/2" x 64" strip. They will not be identical, but coordinated.

Cut 6-1/2" x 64" strip. Fold strip in half. Cut as show below, just like the table runner, making a half triangle cut on the end of the strip, then two triangles. Then measure over 10-1/2" on one long side of the strip, cut 2 more triangles then cut a half triangle on the folded edge. This should yield 4 trapazoids and 8 triangles.

I've labeled my cut pieces below for clarity. You will use the 2 "A" triangles and the first placement (long edge on purple strip) for one placement and the 2 "B" triangles and second placement cut for the second placement

Turn pieces right side out. Match the two short edges of the placement pieces and put the 2 matching triangles on either end, matching stripes. Sew triangles to placement pieces, then sew the straight middle seam, just the same as the table runner. This placement has the purple stripe on the outside and the green on the inside

The second placement which was cut upside down from the first and used triangles B has the purple stripe on the inside and green on the outside

And here's a comparison between store bought placement and the striped mitered placement.

Thanks for working this out. I want mine a bit wider across so I'll try mine with a 12.5 inch outside width.
Its nice when someone can work out all the kinks. Thank you.

Quiltbea - I just cut into my pretty fabric for these. I was able to get 2 identical 7" x 54" strips. Put them right side together and started cutting. Cut down the two sets of discarded triangles from the runner for some of the triangles for placements. Using 10-1/2" for the base, I ended up with 4 placements - 2 with a black center, 2 with a black outer.

Thanks so much for giving me a kick start to figure out the placemats - can't wait to get them sewn up. Of course, I don't have any thin batting here. LOL

Thank you both for putting the time and effort into coming up with directions for the placemats! Smile
