I lived up there during the '78 blizzard! I remember it well. We didn't have a snow shovel, so we called the local Ma/Pa hardware store. They promised to stay open til we got there. Walked in, and they were sitting around the pot-belly stove, waiting for us. It doesn't get any more small-town than that.
Good luck to all in the path. Guess there will be some baby quilts being made for November...

I remember the 78 blizzard as well......that was super nasty We were digging out for what seemed like forever!
Hadn't heard about "Nemo" - must be starting with what is going through here today....we're looking for only 5 - 6" (lucked (?) out and got rain and ice earlier) Stay safe and warm.

I got home from the Beauty Shop just before it started to snow and it is coming down pretty good right now. Like Royal it was hail and sleet earlier this morning. To all in the upper part of the East, stay safe and get your quilts ready, hear it is going to get cold and over a foot of snow. Pat
appears most of you northeasterners won't have to be finding Nemo... cause.. looks like.. Nemo is gonna find you!!
i too remember the Blizzards of the past.. being from the snowbelt of the central NY orginally.. and i'm very happy to be enjoying the warmer weather of the south now..

Something's brewing somewhere for sure. I got my rain headache about an hour ago. Always happens when pressures change & fronts are going to move through. Just call me barometer brain.

Patty j - that is so pretty! I wish that was my backyard!
I doubt we'll get any of that but I hope my girls don't run into trouble tomorrow PM when they travel to NE PA for a church retreat...

I consider myself very lucky to live where I live in the winter time. IF we get snow, it is generally once every 5 - 7 years...and most likely will be ice instead of snow.
For the first time in old-timers' memories we had a Christmas Eve snow. Even though the snow stayed on the ground through the 27th, the roads were passable Christmas afternoon. The only place you had to watch was on bridges/overpasses.
Hey Kc1930, you left chocolate and coffee off your list. Hopefully your boss is watching the news and releases you early. I wish businesses followed school rules and get their people home before the roads get bad. Keep us all posted. Here in Chicago we are getting wet slushy snow.

Yes May, I had a headache all morning and it started snowing about 3 pm. We are in the 9 - 12" area. Got my milk, eggs, water, wine and chocolate - I'm ready. Joan

They say Nemo is on the way. We had a fair amout of snow in southern Wisconsin. Took this picture out my front door. It shows my parking area, not plowed. Everyone in the northeast take care. Sue

Chocolate is always off my list--causes migraines.
pattyj that picture is just beautiful. All it needs are a couple of deer and it would be idealistic. We have just had rain today here so I enjoy the snow probably more that you about now. Hugs, Maggie

Beautiful pictures! I love looking at the snow but so very glad I live in the sunny south, I absolutely freeze in cold weather. Hope everyone stays safe and has plenty of heat.
Like KC, I'm expecting 18-24" of the "white gold" as the ski areas call it. If we loose power I have some knitting to do on those twirly scarves. I fill the 1970's vintage air pot with scalding hot water so at least I can have a cuppa without getting out the camp stove. Generator is all set, hoping it is not needed though as I have my Dad's house to look after now and that is about an hour away with radiant heat in the floor.

Storm is getting to NYC later than predicted. Said it would start shortly after midnight. WE have had the mix so far this a.m. Got to the supermarket before 8 and think I got the last bag of rolls and loaf of bread. We're good for 5-8 inches if you believe the local news, or 12 - 15 if you change the channel. I'm hibernating until its over and hoping for the good will of our neighbors with snow blowers as neither my husband or myself can shovel the stuff anymore.

May, we got about 11" and they've taken down the warning for more. The sun is shining, my driveway is plowed and just waiting for the plow to come by and clear the road. I'm all stocked up and have a baby quilt to finish for Sunday, so I'm not planning on going too far anyway. Where do Lionpride and her mom live?
To everyone on the East Coast, please take care and be safe, stay warm.

We're having snow now but only expect about 3 inches during the day Fri. Our bulk of the 2 feet or so of snow will hit tonite and Sat morning. Still, our schools closed today in anticipation of bad driving later today.
I just hope we don't have any power outage. I'm ready with flashlights, lantern(love mine from LL Bean), candles, bottled water, buckets of water for the john which is on the well, and fleece and quilts. Canned foods; chicken, tuna and sardines and of course, peanut butter, and bread for sandwiches.
I'll post pics when I have some. Its so pretty as its falling but lots of work later.
We have an LLBean lantern too, quiltbea. Actually 2, one is a propane and one is a florescent on battery. Then there are the head-band lights. Great for walking and holding on to the stair railings or carrying items. Hope you have a manual can opener for just in case.
I am guessing 3" so far but expect heavier later in the afternoon.

CT/RI border=south coast: 2 in. already and it hasn't started with the winds and heavy snow YET. I just walked the dogs. Wet and heavy..I do fear the loss of power. It's bitter out there.

Hope you all continue to be safe and check in with your elderly neighbors. DH and I plowed his walk and checked to make sure they were set with food, milk, meds and of course snacks. They assured us they were good. I worry about them he is 87 and she is 86 and has memory problems. I'm making soup tomorrow and going to take some over for them. Stopped snowing here for right now and my dog is loving bouncing around in the snow--it is up over her belly in some spots. Pat No I'm not sewing yet.
quiltinnana2...we got about 11" too. All our schools are closed...my plow snowman beat the Road Commission here this morning also and was kind enough to plow a lane(short distance) to the highway for me since I had an early meeting which was not canceled.. Sun is shinning right now but jeez it is cold /windy out.Now Sunday night may be a different story...we are suppose to get a much worse storm...
ETA: lionpride and her family live by Manistee, about an hour from me...

How is everone doing today?? Lots of snow in Maine and Connecticut according to the weather watch. Hope you all are keeping safe and have power. Heard that many were without power in RI. Take care. Sue

Staten Island lucked out.. maybe 8". The roads are plowed already because we live on a bus route. My backyard does look pretty.. I must admit, even tho I don't like snow.

I just thought - aren't we glad to live in an era with fairly accurate weather predictions/guesses? Imagine the centuries of no warnings! No stores to stock up on the necessary items. Nothing but wood to keep you warm. No need for a generator because there was no electricity to start with. You couldn't stay wrapped in quilts in front of the fireplace all day because you had to get out to take care of the livestock so that they wouldn't freeze! Not to mention drawing water from a well or breaking the ice in the creek for your own drinking water!
Not too many years ago, I remember going out with a heavy hammer (small sledge hammer) to break the ice in the horses' water trough...and our winter is nowhere near what you northeasterners are going through!
There's already been a report of one weather related death up there. I'm praying for all y'all (yep that's Texan for everyone of you)!
Yep Sherry, we are fortunate we have warnings of what's to come so we can prepare. I do remember several years ago (don't remember what year) one of DH's niece's husband had to go out on his snow mobile and knock snow and ice off his cattle's noses so they wouldn't suffocate in the blizzard. They have a large farm in northwest Iowa.
Hope everyone is safe and warm. Makes me shiver just looking at the TV coverage. So glad I'm in the south and it's sunny with an expected high today of 63.
Whew! What a night! Got home late...went to bed as I was afraid we would lose power and with the wind chills below zero, I would have to start the generator. Lucky for me the power only flickered (so far!), but the aftermath is something else. We got a reported 30" so far and the way it is blowing there is no sense of even attempting to start moving this white mess.
Here is a picture of a 4 1/2' drift behind my car...This message has been edited. Last edited by: KC1930,
East of Albany, NY- only about 7". Whew- am glad the myriad of forecasts were way off for here. Cold and windy. Wonderful neighbor came over with his snowblower this morning before I got around to going outside. I have a riding mower with a blade, but just didn't want to face the wind. I hope everyone has such good friends and family.
Sorry to read that KC can't have chocolate. It is fortunate we are forewarned of the storms now. Makes one appreciate the hardships the pioneers went through to establish the country. Our MN winters aren't what they were once, less cold and snow. So many places having more difficult times, makes one wonder, what is going on?? Looks like I am in for frizzle and then some snow, nothing serious, except you don't wanna drive in frizzle! All the best to those in harms way. Joyce

OMG...KC...thats a ton of snow...We get a lot here but not like that...I think 28" is the most ever...but gosh when it blows it packs so hard and is a bear to snow blow...Don't overdue cleaning that mess up and stay warm.
I always wonder what good are generators that need to start with electric???? No electric no generator????? I sure could not get one started with a pull start...even my snowblower has an electric start...go figure..

I've got to tell you the snowblower didn't do the job for us. My son used it on the driveway when we had about 5 or 6" to keep it down. But the bulk of the blizzard fell during sleeping hours. When he got up this morning, the blower couldn't handle the depth and the drifts of our long driveway. We'll have to pay an arm and a leg for a truck plow. We got 19 inches by this morning.
Here's my flower garden this morning. The snow was so deep it toppled over on the birdbath.
We were lucky, we didn't lose our power. Many in Maine, over 100 thousand, have lost it so we're thankful.
My son's golden retriever broke trail for the dogs this morning. My corgi got stuck in the drift when she jumped past me thru the doorway. Had to back up and wait for the bigger dog to break trail. Here's Penny turning around in the trail, scrunching up a bit in doing so. It was just too deep for her. This message has been edited. Last edited by: quiltbea,
Wow, I saw on TV that the Portland, Maine jetport had 29" of snow, a record. We got 22-24" and DH's snowblower broke about 2/3 way through. It would throw the snow just didn't want to move forward. Thankful for great neighbors. Tomorrow we will head North to do Dad's.
Back in the day people filled the larder and had a barrel of flour, dried beans, and the staples all stocked in for winter. Dad said his grandmother kept eggs in the basement in isinglass. A kind of gelatin stuff and he would have to fish for them, about 80 to 85 years ago. Instead of plowing they rolled the roads.

It took me over five hours of snowblowing and shoveling to make a tunnel to the back shed and clean out the driveway. My size snowblower wasn't large enough to do this kind of storm (like what kind is!), but I just pushed it ahead a couple of inches and then backed it up and went over the same places again and again. The biggest issue is when the snow finally caved in and I had to shovel out the snowblower!
The wind is finally slowing down and the snow is just flurries, so I'll do it all again tomorrow to fine tune it. Thank goodness just a flicker of lights and no power outtages. It could have always been worse.
Now they are talking about snow and ice for Monday...give me a break!
The worst thing that could happen is for all that snow to get rained on, or for it to start melting & get rained on. Northeast winter...full rivers & streams...ice jams...thaws...rain...horrible combo. Hope it doesn't come to that.
