I finished the rag quilt that I made for my co-worker who is retiring on Dec. 31. He's been with the company over 40 years & has been a hugh assest out in the shop...so dependable, level headed & a good, good man. We will all miss him when he's gone. He's the one that I had thought about golf themes but couldn't decide on any fabric that I was happy with so DD & I decided that this rag quilt with "manly" colors would be great. Its' the first rag quilt I've ever made & I must say I'm very pleased with it. The backing is the light color that is on front. It finished at about 45" x 66".

Nicki that is so nice of you. I do have a question about your rag quilt. I started to make one for my friends chilren out of her jeans and other clothes. She died last year at 40 years old from breast cancer. Leaving behind a 3 and 5 year old. My machine keeps leaving these long stitches in the seams. Do you know what I can do to stop this? I really wanted to have something done for them by the anniversary of her death, which is the 16th. I don't think it's going to happen.

Nicki, I love the quilt and so will he.I've done many of these, they just get softer the more you wash them.

J Lu...increase your stitch length so it can accomdodate the thickness of the quilt...you will have better luck.

J lu: Using a denim needle will help also.

That is a very nice quilt you made, nlk. He should be quite happy with it, and as fondly as you speak of him, I'll bet it will have him thinking fondly of you.

J lu, I can't think of anything else to do to help you with the stitches. I didn't have that problem. Maybe mine was not as thick as yours. I used regular weight cotton fabric for front & back & flannel between them.

Thanks for the compliments. I've washed & dried it once & hope to do it again at least one more time before I give it to him.

Awesome! It certainly looks manly--especially with the ragged edges. He will surely love it and it is easy on the eyes and looks so comforting. You are such a good friend to people.

I like it - a lot Smile I've been meaning to try making a rag quilt but haven't done so yet. I like yours. Flannel instead of batting? sounds good to me

This was my first rag quilt & I did notice that every where a block joined another one that intersection was very stiff & hard because of the stitching in the seams at the ends. So after I had it all sewn together I went back & ripped out (with my trusty ripper)the stitching at each intersection up to the finshed seam lines & this made a world of difference in the softness of it at the corners of each block. I hope that makes sense. It's kind of hard to describe how it became stiff. I will definately be making another rag quilt in the future.
