Hi, Iam usually larking on the crochet and knitting board because that is what I do best. But my daughter and I went to a craft show a couple of weeks ago and they had the sweatshirts that you sew material on the back then cut away the front of shirt with pattern. I did these years ago and she wanted one with a Christmas Tree on it. I can't find the material to sew around in shape of tree. And not really sure how to do this after all these years. Hopefully someone here could help. Thanks in advance.
Carol

Hi Carol,

I love those shirts. There's a lady at a flea market near here that does them and I was just thinkging about them myself recently.

As for the fabric, any fabric store such as JoAnn, Hobby Lobby, some Walmarts, or a local store in your area will have 100% cottons that you can choose from. Just pick one with the right amount of contrast (that you want) with your shirt color. Same for threads...do you want them to show as part of the design, or do you want them to disappear? Your choice.

Once you find the fabric you like, just cut it to whatever shape you want. Also, I'm thinking that the shirt and fabric should probably also be prewashed so that you don't have one shrinking more than the other after the stitching.

Beyond that, I can't help with the "how to" but that should get you started on the fabrics. I'd love to find the "how to" on this myself.

I did some searching and found this. The pictures with the instructions do not do this project justice AT ALL, but the instructions look good. I hope this helps. I plan to try one myself.

I did another way of using a fabric to peek out the front of a sweatshirt. With the fabric right side facing the inside of the sweatshirt, sew a one inch grid of stitching lines over the sweatshirt for a chosen design. Stitching lines cross each other at right angles. When done with the lines to follow your design, then the cutting begins to expose the underneath added fabric. With sharp scissors cut an "X" in each sown square from corner to corner. Cut only the sweatshirt and not the backing fabric. There will be 4 cut triangles in each grid square. When you wash the sweatshirt the triangles will curl back and show the underneath fabric.
I usually did not wash the swaetshirt before sewing to get the ultimate curling. This craft was popular about 15 years ago. It took very little time to make.
Sewing on the diagonal gave the best effect.

I loved doing this style of sweatshirt. I did mine both ways...making a cut out lattice with the desired design and by cutting an 'X' and letting the shirt curl. They were such fun to do and wear.

My two favorites though were ones where I used lace as the fabric underneath. Ohhhhhh, what elegant shirts they made with those cutouts and a little fabric paint embellishment to make pearls on them. One in black, one in white. Great for the holidays.

I found this one today, different than what we are talking about here but still a cut work sweatshirt. Kinda neat.
