http://tinyurl.com/d7gbv8 this blog shows how to make a zig zag quilt without using triangles. Instructions say to cut your strips 3.5 inches. I want to use a jelly roll I have on hand so my strips will only be 2.5 inches. I thought I could do this without a problem as I would just cut my background strips the same as the jelly roll. However, after you sew your two strips together, you cut those into 5.5 squares. Now I'm lost! Anyone make a zig zag using jelly rolls? TIA

It looks like you cut the pieced strips into segments that are the same width as the two strips after pressing. Cut some scrap pieces the size of your jelly roll, sew them in pairs, press, measure the width of the two pieces sewn. Cut segments to that measurement and see if you can get the right zigzag. Then let us see how it works for you. Madelyn

I agree with Quilting wifey. If you use 2.5" wide strips and sew them together with quarter inch seams you will get pairs that are 4.5" wide. If you cut those into 4.5" squares you can assemble them in zig zag formation as shown in the link you gave.

I put a post up and told you that I think you will need to cut your squares into 4.5" squares. Then I thought maybe I was wrong and deleted it. Then I looked at the blog again. I really do think that you will need to cut those 4.5". I agree with QW...can you try it on some scraps?

She says to cut the strips 3 inches wide then sew two together and cut them into squares 5.50 not tri-angles. 3 + 3= 6 - 1/2 for seam allow = 5.5 with her strips 2.50 + 2.50 = 5 - 1/2 for seam allow = 4.50 Does that make sense..its how I read it. May "In Michigan"

Makes perfect sense. I can't even type the directions right, even though the instructions say 3' and not 3.5". no wonder i could not get it to work when I was drawing it out. I think I will try some color paper before I cut into my fabric. Thanks all - you guys are great!
