I order fabric on line ALL the time and this is the first time I have ever encountered this. Second pic is of the bag the envelope was in. Suggestion if you do not put fabric in a plastic bag for shipping I think it would be a good idea!

Sandy..my grandsons got 2 birthday cards in the mail..in the plastic "we care" crap..both cards were open and money was gone from it. The other card was not even meant for Jack and Ben..but it was in the envelope addressed to him.
jesse sent a birthday card,from Texas, for each of the boys..with money in it.. sad state of affairs. I now send birthday cards with money or gifts cards, in the smaller manila padded envelopes. worth the extra postage..

How horrible!!!!!

Just want to remind everyone that the mail is sorted by machine and when something gets caught and ripped it is hard to get all the pieces into the right envelopes. It might help if you make sure your packages are nice and smooth and the address is neat. And NO I have never worked for the post office.

I also don't work for the post office but have to say it isn't necessarily the fault of the PO if mail is opened and money taken. For example we live in a rural area and our mail box is about a quarter of a mile from the house. One day while walking get the mail I saw what looked like a pile of trash tossed over the side of the bank. So I cussed a bit and crawled down to gather it up to take back to put in with our trash. Surprise - it was an assortment of things taken from a number of different mailboxes and included opened envelopes. I took it all to the post office and they said they would get it to the intended recipients. I don't know if they used the envelopes with the "offensive" message or not but I don't see why the post office should be held responsible for jerks stealing stuff from mailboxes!

Miffed that can't get C-span back here in bedroom. Not so much chatter by the anchors etc on C-span.

I always ask swappers to put all their swaps in plastic bags with their return address on them. While the cash or checks might disappear, the fabric is always there! I guess those with sticky fingers don't know the value of fabric, lol!

This is actually why I prefer a box to even one of the tyvek envelopes. Adds a little to the weight but it seems to travel better. I have received a few of the "we care" packages - at the end of the day "stuff happens" but it is foolish to send cash in anything that could be taken for a BD card - I won't even send gift cards that way. One I sent my nephew "disappeared" a few years ago - I was not a happy camper.

Glad that you got it, Sandy! That is one mangled envelope. I received one of the flat rate envelopes that looked like that before--corner all torn, etc., but everything was ok inside.

Many years ago, DFIL sent us a restaurant gift card in the mail and we never received it .

I always try to pack with care and put the recipients address inside the bag, like KC mentioned.

I find that it also helps to spend the extra seventy cents...and put a deliver confirmation tracking on envelopes and packages.

That way, it is scanned along the way. So, anyone wanting to open it might think twice since it's location would be recorded. And, it has to be "handled" to be scanned by the carrier...so might be taken care of more so.

I send dozens and dozens of stuff every year, and (knock on wood) have not had any mishaps. I put tracking on almost everything...even first class if the envelopes are padded.

Nothing is fool-proof...and if someone want to steal something...they will regardless. But, if we can make them "think twice" maybe they will pick some one else's stuff instead of ours to mis-handle.

I am a clerk at the post office. My first thought when I read your post was that envelopes are made for paper. Anything else really should go in a box. People fight us on this all the time. I usually remind them that those envelopes go through the machines at a very high rate of speed. If they are over filled or not flat, that is what happens.

I once had a lady that brought a flat rate envelope to the post office and a gold charm that was ruined by going through the machine. It was something that she had purchased on Ebay. Anyway, she was upset with the post office because the charm had been damaged. I explained that for .15 more, the sender could have put the charm in a flat rate box and it would never have gone through a machine.

I have to admit that I like the inexpensive shipping from the Fat Quarter Shop. I once got several yards of fabric delivered to me in on of those Flat rate envelopes. But, that really is an abuse of what the envelope was intended for.

will quilt, there was one 9 inch piece of fabric in the envelope. I only posted this in hopes if you mail things to be aware stuff happens and to try to protect the contents.

Yep it happens.. but I have not lost anything yet...except what the thieves took from my mailbox..

Even package tracking and delivery confirmation is a load of hooey for the post office.

I sent a well wrapped, padded and sturdy package to my daughter, using tracking and delivery confirmation. After 3 weeks, I checked the tracking and according to it, the package was still sitting at the post office I mailed it from.

When the "package" was delivered after six weeks, it was in four different bags and all was crushed and or lost. That is why I NEVER mail a quilt!!!

I dislike the post office.
