If you are making something with many colors and pieces, do you change the thread to match each color piece? Or do you use a neutral? If you use a neutral which color do you use - cream, silver, grey, white? I have something coming up - a stained class piece with many colors and don't really want to change thread and bobbin for each individual piece. Just wondering what the majority does.

You'd drive yourself nuts trying to match both top and bottom fabrics! Pick a neutral! For stained glass with black and darks jewel tones I'd use black. For most quilts I use ecru. There have been a few quilts I used white because all the fabrics were very light. If you have good quality fabrics the thread shouldn't show thru. You might get shadowing with darker threads in light fabrics though.

Most of my quilts have many, many different fabrics in a variety of colors and patterns. I just pick some color, any color -- a light if all the colors are lighter or a dark thread if most of the colors are darks. I tend to like rich deep colors like reds, purples, blacks and deep blues, so I use black or something like purple or blue for piecing. The thread for piecing has never shown through.

I generally use white, but I have heard several people say they use gray because it blends so well. They may change from a dark gray to a light gray depending on the fabrics. I think about changing to gray but haven't tried it yet.

Somewhere I heard gray blends with everything.

Gray does blend with everything. I use it in dark or light depending on the fabrics.

Thank you for asking this. I was just wondering the same thing. I am getting fabric of primary colors (blue, red, yellow, orange, and green) and wondered what thread to use.

For piecing use a neutral or whatever..For quilting it depends on whether you want it to stand out or fade in.I use clear polyester YLI Wonder Under in both the bobbin and top threads or I have used it on the top with thread that matches the backing in the bobbin. It is extrememely difficult to match all those colors so I pick one and go with it.

I buy boxes of gray, beige, white, and black. If the fabrics are all darks I use black. If there's white or WOW I use white. Otherwise I use either gray or beige, whichever looks better after pressing a sample. I do, however, enjoy changing threads when quilting. Sometimes I just want to hide my mistakes and other times I want to show off my designs.
